What's new in atopic eczema? An analysis of systematic reviews published in 2007 and 2008. Part 2. Disease prevention and treatment.

This review summarizes clinically important findings from systematic reviews indexed in bibliographical databases between August 2007 and August 2008 that dealt with disease prevention (six reviews) and treatment of atopic eczema (seven reviews). Regarding disease prevention, two independent systematic reviews found some clinical trial evidence that ingestion of probiotics by mothers during pregnancy might reduce the incidence of subsequent eczema. Another review failed to find any clear benefit of prebiotics in eczema prevention. Although furry pets are often cited as causing allergic disease…

Colonic health: fermentation and short chain fatty acids.

Interest has been recently rekindled in short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) with the emergence of prebiotics and probiotics aimed at improving colonic and systemic health. Dietary carbohydrates, specifically resistant starches and dietary fiber, are substrates for fermentation that produce SCFAs, primarily acetate, propionate, and butyrate, as end products. The rate and amount of SCFA production depends on the species and amounts of microflora present in the colon, the substrate source and gut transit time. SCFAs are readily absorbed. Butyrate is the major energy source for colonocytes. Propionate…

Medium-chain inulin reshapes the gut microbiome-metabolome axis to counteract high-fat diet-induced obesity.

BACKGROUND: Inulin, a natural dietary fiber, exerts diverse health benefits that are closely linked to its molecular structure. However, the biological activity of medium-chain inulin and its role in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity remain poorly characterized. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether medium-chain inulin could alleviate high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity by modulating the gut microbiota and metabolome, thereby restoring metabolic homeostasis. METHODS: Forty male C57BL/6 mice were fed either a standard chow diet or an HFD with 1%, 3%, or 5% medium-chain inulin (av

Atractylodes macrocephala polysaccharide AMP1-1 ameliorates weightless-induced cognitive dysfunction via the microbiota-gut-brain axis.

Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz., a traditional Chinese medicine known for "strengthening the spleen and replenishing qi", has been recognized for its gastrointestinal protective and immunomodulatory properties, suggesting a potential role in gut-brain axis regulation. This study investigated the protective effect and underlying mechanism of a purified inulin-type polysaccharide from Atractylodes macrocephala, AMP1-1, against weightlessness-induced cognitive impairment via the microbiota-gut-brain axis. Using a tail-suspension rat model to simulate microgravity, we assessed: (i) cognitive func

Sustainable Protein Transitions: A Comprehensive Review of Insect Meal in Broiler Diets-Nutritional Value, Immunomodulatory Effects, Gut Health Interactions, and Future Perspectives.

Broiler production keeps intensifying, and the environmental cost of the protein sources that feed it, principally soybean meal and fishmeal, has become harder to justify. Insect meal, derived chiefly from black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens), yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor), and housefly larvae (Musca domestica), has emerged as a candidate able to address nutritional, immunological, and ecological goals at once. This review evaluates the evidence on the nutritional composition, digestibility, growth performance, immunomodulatory mechanisms, and gut health effects of insect meal in

Next-generation fermented foods from non-conventional proteins: Linking fermentation dynamics, flavor chemistry, and gut microbiome modulation.

The urgent need to diversify protein sources beyond animal agriculture has propelled non-conventional proteins (e.g., insects, microalgae, single-cell organisms, novel plants) to the forefront of food innovation. However, their adoption is limited by off-flavors, anti-nutritional factors, and low digestibility. Fermentation can address these drawbacks and may impart health-relevant benefits, though human evidence remains limited. This review defines next-generation fermented foods (NGFFs) as rationally fermented non-conventional protein substrates achieving superior sensory, nutritional, and g

Combined inulin, glucomannan, and medium-chain triglyceride modulate metabolic and inflammatory responses in chemotherapy-treated colorectal cancer cells.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a global health challenge. The efficacy of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is frequently limited by chemoresistance, inflammation, and compensatory pro-angiogenic signaling. Prebiotic fibers and metabolically active lipids have been shown to modulate immune-metabolic pathways that may influence tumor behavior and chemotherapy response. The aim of the study was to evaluate the immunomodulatory and chemo-adjunct effects of inulin, glucomannan, and a combined inulin-glucomannan-medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) formulation on CRC cells exposed to 5-FU. An in vitro experimental

A sea buckthorn pericarp polysaccharide: Structure and amelioration of ulcerative colitis by modulating gut microbiota.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is characterized by colonic mucosal injury, epithelial barrier disruption, and gut microbiota dysbiosis, yet lacks effective therapeutic interventions. Polysaccharides are emerging as promising natural candidates for UC intervention. Sea buckthorn, a traditional medicinal plant, has documented intestinal protective effects; however, its pericarp-derived bioactive components remain largely unexplored. To valorize this botanical resource, a bioactive homogeneous polysaccharide with potential efficacy against UC, designated SBPP-BI (Mw = 62.0 kDa), was isolated and purifie

Ultrasound-assisted extraction of total saponins from Ardisia mamillata Hance and their effects on the gut microbiota of mice fed a higher-fat and -sugar diet.

Ardisia mamillata Hance is a traditional Chinese medicinal plant rich in saponins and shows considerable potential for application in functional foods. However, systematic investigations into efficient extraction strategies and the biological activities of its constituents remain limited. To address this gap, the present study optimized an extraction process for total saponins from Ardisia mamillata Hance and evaluated their regulatory effects on gut microbiota dysbiosis induced by a high-fat, high-sugar diet in mice. Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), combined with a Box-Behnken response s

A Synbiotic of Lacto-N-tetraose and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis MN-Gup Attenuates High-Fat Diet-Induced Obesity by Modulating Metabolism and Gut Microbiota in Mice.

Background/Objectives: Obesity is closely associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis, intestinal barrier dysfunction, and impaired glucose and lipid metabolism. However, single probiotic or prebiotic interventions often yield only limited metabolic improvements. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a synbiotic formulation comprising Lacto-N-tetraose (LNT) and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis MN-Gup (MN-Gup) in a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mouse model. Methods: In this study, an HFD-induced obese mouse model was used to investigate whether the synbiotic formulation of LNT and

Gut Microbiota-Immune Interactions in Chronic Lung Diseases: An Emerging Cross-Disease Perspective Gut-Lung Axis in Chronic Lung Disease.

Chronic lung diseases, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchiectasis and pulmonary fibrosis, remain major causes of morbidity and mortality despite advances in pharmacological treatment. Emerging evidence suggests that these conditions are influenced by a bidirectional gut-lung axis, through which intestinal microbiota, microbial metabolites, epithelial barrier integrity and mucosal immune programming shape pulmonary inflammation, tissue remodelling and host defence. In this narrative review, we synthesise current clinical and experimental evidence linking gut

The blood pressure lowering effect of beetroot juice is impaired in periodontitis and recovered after periodontal treatment.

We have previously demonstrated that subgingival levels of nitrate-reducing bacteria, as well as the in vitro salivary nitrate reduction capacity (NRC), were diminished in periodontitis patients, increasing after periodontal treatment. However, it remains unclear if an impaired NRC in periodontitis can affect systemic health. To determine this, the effect of nitrate-rich beetroot juice (BRJ) on blood pressure was determined in 15 periodontitis patients before and 70 days after periodontal treatment (i.e., professional mechanical plaque removal, oral hygiene instruction, and subgingival instrum

Effects of Chinese yam and its peel polysaccharides on blood glucose and lipids in type 2 diabetic mice.

Chinese yam (Dioscorea opposita Thunb.) is a traditional medicinal and edible homologous material, with polysaccharides being its primary bioactive components. In this study, two polysaccharides (CYP and CYPP) were isolated and purified from Chinese yam (cv. Tiegun) and its peel, and their anti-diabetic activities were investigated. Structural characterization revealed that the weight-average molecular weights of CYP and CYPP were 74,746 Da and 118,083 Da, respectively. Monosaccharide composition analysis showed that both polysaccharides had similar compositions, primarily consisting of mannos

Fucoidan as a therapeutic agent for ulcerative colitis: mechanisms of action and modulation of the gut microbiota.

Ulcerative colitis (UC), a chronic inflammatory bowel disease driven by gut dysbiosis, immune dysregulation, and oxidative stress, lacks universally effective therapies. Fucoidan (FCD), a sulfated polysaccharide derived from brown algae, has emerged as a multifaceted therapeutic candidate due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties. This review synthesizes FCD's mechanisms in UC pathogenesis, emphasizing its suppression of NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways to reduce proinflammatory cytokines (e.g., IL-6, TNF-α) and regulate TLR-mediated macrophage polarization.
