Multiple schistosome and soil-transmitted nematode infections are frequently reported in human populations living in tropical areas of developing countries. In addition to exposure factors, the host immune response plays an important role in helminth control and morbidity in hosts with multiple infections; however, these aspects are difficult to evaluate in human populations. In the current study, female Swiss mice were simultaneously co-infected with Strongyloides venezuelensis and Schistosoma mansoni or infected with St. venezuelensis at 2, 4, or 14 weeks after Sc. mansoni infection. The sim

There is growing evidence that populations of the northern flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus) are declining in the eastern United States, perhaps due to competition with the southern flying squirrel (Glaucomys volans). Potential causes include parasite-mediated or apparent competition from the shared intestinal nematode, Strongyloides robustus, which has been shown to detrimentally affect the northern flying squirrel but not the southern flying squirrel. To investigate this hypothesis, we conducted a preliminary study on the parasite community of both flying squirrel species from sites in Pe

Hyperinfection caused by Strongyloides stercoralis in iatrogenically immunosuppressed patients is becoming more frequently observed. Here, we review the relevant literature and present a recent case of hyperinfection syndrome of S stercoralis in a patient chronically treated with systemic corticosteroids and methotrexate for dermatomyositis. The patient was born in Guatemala but no history of Strongyloides infection was documented. Disseminated Strongyloides is often associated with the immunocompromised state and is commonly seen with cutaneous lesions, respiratory failure, and sepsis. In thi

A real-time PCR method targeting the small subunit of the rRNA gene was developed for the detection of Strongyloides stercoralis DNA in faecal samples, including an internal control to detect inhibition of the amplification process. The assay was performed on a range of well-defined control samples (n=145), known positive faecal samples (n=38) and faecal samples from a region in northern Ghana where S. stercoralis infections are highly endemic (n=212), and achieved 100% specificity and high sensitivity. The use of this assay could facilitate monitoring the prevalence and intensity of S. sterco

Basophils represent potential effector and immunoregulatory cells, as well as a potential source of IL-4, during the immune response elicited by infection with the nematode Nippostrongylus brasiliensis (N.b.), and in other settings. However, the factors which regulate the numbers of blood basophils in mice, or the ability of these cells to produce IL-4, are not fully understood. We found that infection of mice with the nematodes N.b. or Strongyloides venezuelensis (S.v.) induced substantial increases in the numbers of blood basophils (to as high as 18% of circulating blood leukocytes). BACKGROUND: Attention regarding imported tropical diseases is typically focused on malaria, although other parasitic diseases such as strongyloidosis may also cause serious health problems. The importance of assessing clinical features and of proper diagnosis and treatment is presented on the basis of 31 patients with imported strongyloidosis.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed regarding patients treated for strongyloidosis in two referral centers in Switzerland from 1998 to 2002.
RESULTS: Imported strongyloidosis was investigated in 12 travelers and 19 immigrants. The reasons f

Vertical transmission of larvae is a major pathway in the life cycle of several species of Strongyloides, but evidence for it occurring in humans or dogs with Strongyloides stercoralis is absent. In an effort to determine if vertical transmission could occur with S. stercoralis, each of 3 female dogs was infected with filariform larvae at a different stage of the reproductive cycle, i.e., preconception, gestation, or postpartum. Results showed that none of 6 pups born to a female infected before conception or any of 6 pups born to another female infected during gestation harbored any stage of

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy and parasitic infection are globally prevalent conditions that frequently coexist. Most pregnant patients with intestinal parasitic infections may be managed without antiparasitic chemotherapy.
CASE: Shortly after a visit to her nation of origin, a 22-year-old native of Ethiopia presented during her first trimester with gastrointestinal complaints and worms in her stool, which were identified as Taenia. Microscopic examination of her stool also demonstrated Strongyloides stercoralis larvae, likely the residue of an infection that had occurred several years prior to her p

The authors consider screening populations with two screening tests but where a definitive "gold standard" is not readily available. They discuss a recent article in which a Bayesian approach to this problem is developed based on data that are sampled from a single population. It was subsequently pointed out that such inferences will not necessarily be accurate in the sense that standard errors for parameters may not decrease as n increases. This problem will generally occur when the data are insufficient to estimate all of the parameters as is the case when screening a single population with

Here the use of repeated measure linear modeling to analyze experimental infections is demonstrated. This method of analysis makes full use of serial measurements on the same host throughout the course of an infection while taking into account correlations between measures within the same host. As an example, repeated measure linear modeling is used to analyze worm output from an experimental infection of Strongyloides ratti, a nematode parasite of rats. This analysis allows differences in the temporal dynamics of infection of two lines of S. ratti to be dissected.

Fecal nematode egg counts and serum pepsinogen concentrations of cattle were determined in six Provinces of the northern (Chiangrai and Lampang), north-eastern (Khonkaen, Mahasarakham and Nakhonratchasima) and eastern (Chonburi) parts of Thailand in the dry season. Nematode eggs were detected in 82% of animals examined. Serum pepsinogen concentrations ranged from 78 to 2,951 (mean 934) mU tyrosine. Animals in Chonburi Province had higher mean values for both egg counts and serum pepsinogen concentrations than animals in the other Provinces. Two calves in Khonkaen and Mahasarakham Provinces wer
