Cell- and Serum-Derived Proteins Act as DAMPs to Activate RAW 264.7 Macrophage-like Cells on Silicone Implants.

Protein adsorption after biomaterial implantation is the first stage of the foreign body response (FBR). However, the source(s) of the adsorbed proteins that lead to damaged associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) and induce inflammation have not been fully elucidated. This study examined the effects of different protein sources, cell-derived (from a NIH/3T3 fibroblast cell lysate) and serum-derived (from fetal bovine serum), which were compared to implant-derived proteins (after a 30 min subcutaneous implantation in mice) on activation of RAW 264.7 cells cultured in minimal (serum-free) medium.

A Comparative Study of Mercury Bioaccumulation in Bivalve Molluscs from a Shallow Estuarine Embayment.

In estuarine food webs, bivalve molluscs transfer nutrients and pollutants to higher trophic levels. Mercury (Hg) pollution is ubiquitous, but it is especially elevated in estuaries historically impacted by industrial activities, such as those in the U.S. Northeast. Monomethylmercury (MeHg), the organic form of Hg, is highly bioaccumulative and transferable in the food web resulting in the highest concentrations in the largest and oldest marine predators. Patterns of Hg concentrations in marine bivalve molluscs, however, are poorly understood. In this study, inorganic Hg (iHg), MeHg, and the t

Can herd seroprevalence be used as an indicator of enzootic stability for bovine anaplasmosis? Insights from a case-control field study in Brazil.

Bovine anaplasmosis presents a significant challenge to livestock production in tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions. For many years, the concept of enzootic stability/instability (initially established for babesiosis) and herd seroprevalence as an indicator of outbreak risks have been applied to anaplasmosis. However, this model has never been definitively validated for Anaplasma marginale. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between herd immunity (seroprevalence) and the occurrence of anaplasmosis outbreaks in Southern Brazil. A case-control study was conducte

Masticatory habits of the adult Neanderthal individual BD 1 from La Chaise-de-Vouthon (France).

OBJECTIVES: The analysis of dental wear provides a useful approach for dietary and cultural habit reconstructions of past human populations. The analysis of macrowear patterns can also be used to better understand the individual chewing behavior and to investigate the biomechanical responses during different biting scenarios. The aim of this study is to evaluate the diet and chewing performance of the adult Neanderthal Bourgeois-Delaunay 1 (BD 1) and to investigate the relationship between wear and cementum deposition under mechanical demands. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The macrowear pattern of B

From pole to pole, life-long research of sleep in extreme environments.

In November 1965, Michel Jouvet accepted me into his laboratory in Lyon as a medical student at a time when sleep research was an adventure. After 4 years of investigations in cats, I obtained my medical doctorate. Being a military physician, I was posted to Antarctica for wintering over and was initiated by Jean Rivolier into the psychology of small isolated human groups. I recorded 180 polysomnographic (PSG) nights in eight of my companions. This was my first contribution to research on human sleep under extreme environments and conditions. I then entered René Hénane's military thermophysiol

Pediatric trichinosis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Trichinellosis is a zoonosis, caused by roundworms of the genus Trichinella. Domestic pigs, wild boars, bears, rodents and horses are reservoir animals. We report a case of neck trichinosis presenting as lateral neck swelling. The diagnosis of trichinosis was confirmed by the presence of larvae on muscle biopsy. Furthermore, lateral neck swelling may provide a diagnostic challenge by clinically mimicking a lymphoma or other causes of lateral neck swelling. Due to its rarity and its tendency to pose a clinical diagnostic challenge, we decided to report it. CASE PRESENTATION: A-10 y

Biomechanics of phagocytosis of red blood cells by macrophages in the human spleen.

The clearance of senescent and altered red blood cells (RBCs) in the red pulp of the human spleen involves sequential processes of prefiltration, filtration, and postfiltration. While prior work has elucidated the mechanisms underlying the first two processes, biomechanical processes driving the postfiltration phagocytosis of RBCs retained at interendothelial slits (IES) are still poorly understood. We present here a unique computational model of macrophages to study the role of cell biomechanics in modulating the kinetics of phagocytosis of aged and diseased RBCs retained in the spleen. After

Case presentation and management of Lyme disease patients: a 9-year retrospective analysis in France.

INTRODUCTION: Lyme borreliosis (LB) is the most common vector disease in temperate countries of the northern hemisphere. It is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex. METHODS: To study the case presentation of LB in France, we contacted about 700 physicians every year between 2003 and 2011. An anonymous questionnaire was established allowing the collection of 3,509 cases. The information collected was imported or directly entered into databases and allowed identifying variables that were validated in a multiple correspondence analysis (MCA). RESULTS: Sixty percent of the cases wer

A Rare Case of Weil's Disease Presenting With Severe Hyperbilirubinemia and Acute Kidney Injury: A Diagnostic Challenge in Urban England.

We present a rare and challenging case of Weil's disease in a patient who was admitted to the Critical Care Unit with a clinical suspicion of the condition. The patient showed a prompt response to treatment before laboratory confirmation was obtained. Leptospirosis, a zoonotic disease, is most commonly found in tropical and temperate regions. While it is uncommon in the UK, it carries the potential for severe complications if not treated promptly. We report a 57-year-old gentleman from the North of England with no previous past medical history of note who presented with febrile illness and jau

The effects of weather and mobility on respiratory viruses dynamics before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in the USA and Canada.

The flu season is caused by a combination of different pathogens, including influenza viruses (IVS), that cause the flu, and non-influenza respiratory viruses (NIRVs), that cause common colds or influenza-like illness. These viruses exhibit similar dynamics and meteorological conditions have historically been regarded as a principal modulator of their epidemiology, with outbreaks in the winter and almost no circulation during the summer, in temperate regions. However, after the emergence of SARS-CoV2, in late 2019, the dynamics of these respiratory viruses were strongly perturbed worldwide: so

Vitamin D Status and Associated Factors of Older Adults in the Cross-Sectional 2015-2017 Survey.

Vitamin D is beneficial for maintaining good health; however, there is a lack of nationally representative data reported, particularly in older adults. To better understand the nutritional status of vitamin D and its influencing factors on Chinese older adults, we adopted stratified random sampling to select serum samples originating from the Chronic Disease and Nutritional Survey Biobank of Chinese Residents in 2015-2017. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations were determined by enzyme-linked immunoassay. The OR and PR of associated factors for vitamin D deficiency and insufficien

Evaluation of the Thermal Response of the Horns in Dairy Cattle.

Dairy cattle are typically disbudded or dehorned. Little is known, however, about the biological function and role of horns during thermoregulatory processes in cattle, and thus about the potential physiological consequences of horn removal. Anecdotal evidence suggests that dairy cow horns increase in temperature during rumination, and few studies on other bovid species indicate that horns aid thermoregulation. The objective of this study was, therefore, to elucidate a possible thermoregulatory function of the horns in dairy cattle. Using non-invasive infrared thermography, we measured the sup

Epidemiological Changes in Respiratory Viral Infections in Children: The Influence of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Viruses are the major cause of acute respiratory infections in children, causing important morbimortality. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, in temperate regions, respiratory viruses displayed a typical seasonality in transmission. A disruption in this pattern was observed in several countries during the pandemic, with low prevalence during the typical season, and an interseasonal rise. We evaluated the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in the epidemiology of non-COVID viral respiratory infections in children, in a tertiary care hospital in Portugal. METHODS: Between March 2020 and Aug

A century of climate warming results in growing season extension: Delayed autumn leaf phenology in north central North America.

Shifts in the timing of key leaf phenological events including budburst, foliage coloration, and leaf fall have been observed worldwide and are consistent with climate warming. Quantifying changes in growing season length (GSL) because of shifts in both spring and autumn leaf phenology is crucial for modeling annual net ecosystem carbon uptake. However, a lack of long-term autumn phenology datasets has prevented assessment of these growing season level changes. We investigated shifts in growing season length, budburst, foliage coloration, and leaf fall over the past century in seven native har

Pesticide use in banana plantations in Costa Rica - A review of environmental and human exposure, effects and potential risks.

Biodiversity is declining on a global scale. Especially tropical ecosystems, containing most of the planetary biodiversity, are at risk. Agricultural monocrop systems contribute to this decline as they replace original habitats and depend on extensive use of synthetic pesticides that impact ecosystems. In this review we use large-scale banana production for export purposes in Costa Rica as an example for pesticide impacts, as it is in production for over a century and uses pesticides extensively for more than fifty years. We summarise the research on pesticide exposure, effects and risks for a

Heatwaves and human sleep: Stress response versus adaptation.

The World Meteorological Organization considers a heatwave as "a period of statistically unusual hot weather persisting for a number of days and nights". Accompanying the ongoing global climate change, sharp heatwave bouts occur worldwide, growing in frequency and intensity, and beginning earlier in the season. Heatwaves exacerbate the risk of heat-related illnesses, hence human morbidity and mortality, particularly in vulnerable elderly and children. Heat-related illnesses present a continuum from normothermic (prickly heat, heat edema, heat cramps, heat tetany) to hyperthermic syndromes (fro

Recent Population Dynamics of Japanese Encephalitis Virus.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) causes acute viral encephalitis in humans and reproductive disorders in pigs. JEV emerged during the 1870s in Japan, and since that time, JEV has been transmitted exclusively throughout Asia, according to known reporting and sequencing records. A recent JEV outbreak occurred in Australia, affecting commercial piggeries across different temperate southern Australian states, and causing confirmed infections in humans. A total of 47 human cases and 7 deaths were reported. The recent evolving situation of JEV needs to be reported due to its continuous circulation

Low vitamin D levels do not predict risk of autoimmune disease following alemtuzumab treatment for multiple sclerosis.

Alemtuzumab is a highly effective treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS) and the treatment strategy of two cycles 12 months apart has a lot of appeal to patients. Widespread use of alemtuzumab has been tempered by treatment emergent autoimmunity which is seen in approximately one-third of patients in the 5 years after treatment. It has been postulated that relative vitamin D deficiency may be a causative factor in this setting. We have conducted a retrospective case-control study looking at the association of vitamin D and other potentially relevant clinical factors on the likelihood of treatme

Is the distinction between tonic and phasic irritability meaningful in 3-year-old children?

Irritability encompasses both normative misbehavior in early childhood and clinically significant problems across development. Recent studies have distinguished between tonic (i.e., persistently angry or grumpy mood) and phasic (i.e., temper tantrums or outbursts) forms of irritability and shown that they have different implications for psychopathology and functioning. However, data on this distinction in young (i.e., preschool aged) children are nonexistent. We utilized data from a longitudinal study of a community sample of 462 3-year-olds followed to age 15. We conducted confirmatory factor
