Endolymphatic hydrops revealed by intravenous gadolinium injection in patients with Ménière's disease.

CONCLUSION: Visualization of endolymphatic hydrops became possible after intravenous gadolinium (Gd) injection in patients with Ménière's disease. OBJECTIVE: To visualize endolymphatic hydrops after intravenous Gd injection. METHODS: Gd (gadoteridol; 0.2 mmol/kg) was injected intravenously in three patients with unilateral Ménière's disease. We performed three-dimensional fluid attenuated inversion recovery (3D-FLAIR) and three-dimensional real inversion recovery (3D-real IR) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) 4 h after the injection using a 3-Tesla MRI unit. We used a 32-channel array coil to

Correlating the cochleovestibular deficits with tumor size of acoustic neuroma.

CONCLUSION: The tumor size of acoustic neuroma correlates with cochleovestibular deficits. Those tumors with global frequency hearing loss, bilateral gaze nystagmus, or absent caloric and VEMP responses may indicate a tumor size >2.5 cm. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the correlation between cochleovestibular deficits and the size of acoustic neuroma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 44 patients with acoustic neuroma were enrolled in this study. Pure tone audiometry, electronystagmography, caloric test, vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) test, and MRI were conducted. RE

Genetics of familial and non-familial skull base tumours.

Many tumours of the skull base, including schwannomas, paragangliomas, meningiomas and anterior pituitary tumours occur both as sporadic tumours and in clear cut familial syndromes. These cancers' highly penetrant dominantly inherited syndromes have proven to be a rich resource for locating tumour genes, most of which are of the tumour suppressor type. Recently, the gene for type 2 neurofibromatosis (NF2) was isolated by the technique of positional cloning. The NF2 gene has now been demonstrated to be involved in the pathogenesis of both familial and non-familial vestibular schwannomas as well

[Morphologic and cytochemical research aboard the biosatellite "Cosmos-782"].

Organs of rats flown for 19.5 days on board the Cosmos-782 biosatellite were investigated morphologically and cytochemically. After flight, as a result of drastic decrease or loss of static load on the musculeskeletal system in zero-g, the rats developed mineral metabolism changes that morphologically appeared as osteoporosis of spongy bones, their periosteocytic osteolysis, as well as inhibition of red blood cell precursors in bone marrow, atrophy and dystrophy of skeletal muscles. The development of stress-reaction which seemed to increase at certain flight stages (launch and re-entry) and w

Whole-ear finite element analysis of superior semicircular canal dehiscence and its impact on inner-ear responses.

OBJECTIVE: To establish a high-fidelity finite element method (FEM) model of the human inner ear and explore the biomechanical effects of superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SCD) on both cochlear and vestibular function. METHODS: A detailed FEM model of the entire human ear was reconstructed from high-resolution computed tomography (CT) data. The model was validated through comparison with established experimental data, including basilar membrane (BM) displacement patterns, cochlear tonotopy, inner ear impedance, and middle-ear transfer function. After validation, the model was adapted to

Labyrinthine sequestration secondary to auditory implantation: report of two cases and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Auditory implantation into the inner ear is increasingly performed for a variety of indications. Infective complications are rare, but when they occur they can have devastating consequences. CASE REPORTS: This paper reports two cases where vestibular sequestration of the bony labyrinth developed following implantation into the middle ear. CONCLUSION: To the authors' knowledge, these are the first reported cases where vestibular sequestration has resulted from auditory implant surgery. This paper outlines the radiological changes characteristic of this pathology. It also describes

Tricellulin deficiency affects tight junction architecture and cochlear hair cells.

The two compositionally distinct extracellular cochlear fluids, endolymph and perilymph, are separated by tight junctions that outline the scala media and reticular lamina. Mutations in TRIC (also known as MARVELD2), which encodes a tricellular tight junction protein known as tricellulin, lead to nonsyndromic hearing loss (DFNB49). We generated a knockin mouse that carries a mutation orthologous to the TRIC coding mutation linked to DFNB49 hearing loss in humans. Tricellulin was absent from the tricellular junctions in the inner ear epithelia of the mutant animals, which developed rapidly prog

Vestibular type of Mondini anomalies with BPPV and Meniere's disease-like symptoms.

An extremely rare case with labyrinthine anomaly with normal hearing was demonstrated. This case firstly showed transient positioning vertigo like benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and subsequently episodic vertigo like Meniere's disease. A 55-year-old male attended our hospital, complaining of transient but persistent positioning vertigo in 2004. The apogeotropic positioning nystagmus was observed in spine position. In 2005, he came to feel episodic vertigo continuously for more than 30min like Meniere's disease. We examined CT scan and 3D-MRI, indicating the hypoplastic lateral sem

Fusion of vestibular and podokinesthetic information during self-turning towards instructed targets.

When observers step about their vertical axis ("active turning") without vision they dispose of essentially two sources of information that can tell them by how much they have turned: the vestibular cue which reflects head rotation in space and the "podokinesthetic" cue, a compound of leg proprioceptive afferents and efference copy signals which reflects the observer's motion relative to his support. We ask how these two cues are fused in the process leading to the perception of self-displacement during active turning. To this end we compared the performance of observers in three angular navig

Cross-power spectral density analysis of pursuit tracking. Evaluation of central and peripheral pathology.

Twenty-one normal subjects were evaluated for pursuit tracking performance at frequencies of .2, .4, .8, 1.2 and 1.6 Hz. Measures of phase (lead or lag of target), gain (amplitude of response) and spectral purity (distortion of smooth tracking) were obtained by a cross-power spectrum analysis of the stimulus input and the eye movement output. It was determined that normal subjects could quite adequately track a target moving at .4 Hz. After establishing this parameter for normals, 43 patients with central and peripheral pathology related to the vestibulo-oculomotor system were tested at this f

Vestibular functions in patients with tinnitus only.

OBJECTIVE: Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the ears or head without any external or internal acoustic stimulation, and it is usually associated with hearing loss. In addition, it has been reported that there is a relationship between vestibular problems and sensorineural hearing loss. The aim of this study was to evaluate the vestibular function in patients with tinnitus without hearing loss. METHODS: A total of 32 patients who complained only of tinnitus without hearing loss and 30 control subjects without tinnitus or hearing loss were included in this study. Oculomotor and caloric te

Relationship between video head impulse test, ocular and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials, and compartmental magnetic resonance imaging classification in menière's disease.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Currently, it is possible to assess in vivo the morphology of each compartment of the endolymphatic spaces 4 hours after an intravenous administration of gadolinium on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between otolithic and ampullar functions (cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential [cVEMP], ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential [oVEMP], video head impulse test [VHIT]) and delayed inner ear MRI based on a compartmental, anatomically based classification that included the cochlea, the saccule, the utricle, an

Recovery times of stance and gait balance control after an acute unilateral peripheral vestibular deficit.

BACKGROUND: Acute unilateral peripheral vestibular deficit (aUPVD) patients have balance deficits that can improve after several weeks. Determining differences in vestibulo-spinal reflex (VSR) influences on balance control and vestibular ocular reflex (VOR) responses with peripheral recovery and central compensation would provide insights into CNS plasticity mechanisms. Also, clinically, knowing when balance control is approximately normal again should contribute to decisions about working ability after aUPVD. Usually VORs are employed for this purpose, despite a lack of knowledge about correl
