Oil of Mediterranean oregano Oreganum vulgare was orally administered to 14 adult patients whose stools tested positive for enteric parasites, Blastocystis hominis, Entamoeba hartmanni and Endolimax nana. In this report, we describe four cases of granulomatous amebic encephalitis caused by Balamuthia (Leptomyxid ameba) in four previously healthy Mexican patients. All four cases were characterized by focal neurologic signs, increased intracranial pressure, and cerebral hyperdense lesions in computed tomography scans of the head. Amoebiasis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Virulence of Entamoeba histolytica depends on the trophozoite's being able to bind to colonic epithelium; binding is mediated by the 170 kD subunit of a 260 kD lectin. A patient wearing an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) was diagnosed as being colonized by Actinomyces and amoebae by examination of a routine Papanicolaou smear. The patient received vaginal treatment with metronidazole, which temporarily eliminated the protozoa; however, it was necessary to remove the IUD to definitively eradicate the microorganisms. Follow-up Papanicolaou smears taken after removal of the IUD have been normal and free of both microorganisms.

In an attempt to define the role of neutrophils in immunity to Naegleria fowleri in vivo, we examined the effects of treating immunized (with amoeba culture supernatant antigen) mice with the monoclonal antibody NIMP-R10, which binds to neutrophil complement receptor type 3bi (CR3) and causes selective neutrophil depletion in mice. The role of the spleen in amoebic infection was examined in mice, using strains selected as being either genetically-susceptible (C57BL/6) or genetically-resistant (A/J) to amoebiasis. Splenectomized and sham-operated animals were inoculated intracaecally with 2.5 X 10(5) polyxenic trophozoites of E. histolytica at 6, 12 and 15 days post-splenectomy. The animals were killed 6 or 12 days after infection and the parasite burden was evaluated. Hepatic iron concentrations were measured in 60 Black patients who had died of amoebiasis. There were 18 infants and young children, 30 adult males and 12 adult females. The mean hepatic iron concentration in infants was normal (0,11% dry weight), while those in adult males and females were significantly raised (0,64% and 0,30% dry weight respectively). A survey was conducted to determine the prevalence of protozoan parasites in a large semicommunal group in Los Angeles. Protozoan parasites were observed in 151 (69%) of the 220 group members in the study. Parasites were observed in stool specimens from 105 (76%) of the 138 children and 46 (56%) of the 82 adults. A comparative study of 108 patients with patient amoebiasis and a reference group of 85 free of the disease but living in endemic area. The positivity of the test has been more frequent and has given higher titers in the extra-intestinal forms than in the intestinal ones. The majority of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis cases in man have been caused by Naegleria, although three new cases have been identified due to Acanthamoeba. These cases showed a somewhat chronic course and death occurred 2 to 6 weeks after onset. The etiological agent in two cases was identified as belonging to the group of A. castellanii and the third case was identified as due to A. culbertsoni. The identification was performed post-mortem.
