PURPOSE: To compare the reactive proliferation of non-pigmented ciliary epithelial cells in patients with cyclitis, or after cyclophotocoagulation and cyclocryocoagulation, and the cultured non-pigmented ciliary epithelial cells from adult pigs.

DESIGN: Retrospective review of consecutive interventional case series.
METHODS: Charts of patients treated for epithelial ingrowth over a 10-year period by a single surgeon were reviewed. Cases of anterior chamber epithelial cysts were identified and recorded, including details of ocular history, preoperative and postoperative acuity, intraocular pressure (IOP), and ocular examination, type of surgical intervention, and details of further procedures performed.

Plaque radiotherapy has been used successfully as primary treatment for selected solitary retinoblastomas. However, there is relatively little information on its role as a secondary treatment after other methods have failed to control the tumor. A consecutive series of 38 eyes of 35 glaucoma patients treated with transillumination guided cyclocryotherapy (CCT) either to obtain pain relief or to achieve IOP control was studied at Helsinki University Eye Hospital. Transillumination was used to guide the applications to the correct site. The follow-up range was 1-43 months (mean 9 months). Pretreatment IOP was 39 +/- 13 mm Hg and postoperative 26 +/- 16 mm Hg (mean +/- SD). Twenty-three eyes underwent one and 15 eyes 2-5 procedures. IOP control (IOP 9-23 mm Hg) was achieved in 50%. Fourteen cases of anogenital warts in children are reported. Girls were more frequently affected than boys (9/5). Three children had been infected during birth; two had autoinfection from non-anogenital warts; two girls had apparently been sexually abused. In the remaining 7 cases the origin of the warts was unknown. The authors discuss the epidemiological, therapeutic and social implications of this little known but important paediatric pathology, pointing to the possibility of sexual transmission in cases of "apparently" unknown origin.

Up-to-date electrophysiologic investigations of the heart, carried out in 212 children with arrhythmias, demonstrated a focus of ectopic atrial tachycardia in 21 (9.9%); 17 of those underwent long-term treatment (up to 10 years) with antiarrhythmic drugs. Seventeen eyes of 14 patients affected with severe pars planitis underwent surgical treatment with either cryotherapy - 3 eyes - or diathermy - 14 eyes. The indications for surgery were selected as follows: ten eyes of 9 patients showed recurrence(s) or increase of ocular inflammation following tapering of systemic corticoids; 5 patients had contra-indications to systemic corticoids. Ten eyes had cystoid macular edema. The follow-up after surgery varies from 2,5 years to 10 years with an average of 5 years.
