A 12-week multidomain intervention versus active control to reduce risk of Alzheimer's disease: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Disappointing results from clinical trials of disease-modifying interventions for Alzheimer's dementia (AD), along with reliable identification of modifiable risk factors in mid life from epidemiological studies, have contributed to calls to invest in risk-reduction interventions. It is also well known that AD-related pathological processes begin more than a decade before the development of clinical signs. These observations suggest that lifestyle interventions might be most effective when targeting non-symptomatic adults at risk of AD. To date, however, the few dementia risk-reduc

[Traumatic hemipelvectomy. Experiences with 11 cases].

With further improvements of the prehospital rescue systems, an increasing number of patients with extreme injuries such as traumatic hemipelvectomy are admitted to trauma centers alive. The accepted definition of traumatic hemipelvectomy is: unstable ligamentous or osseous hemipelvic injury with rupture of the pelvic neurovascular bundle (open or closed integuments). A review of the literature up to 1995 yielded on 48 surving cases with such an injury. A review of 2002 consecutive patients after pelvic fractures treated from 1972-1994 at the Medical School Hannover, resulted in the identifica

Is clinical experience associated with lower perceived resuscitation stress in emergency nurses? Psychometric validation of the Chinese Perceived Stress during Resuscitation Scale and comparison of novice, intermediate, and expert practitioners.

BACKGROUND: Resuscitation imposes substantial psychological stress on emergency nurses, potentially impairing clinical performance and patient outcomes. Whether cumulative clinical experience is associated with lower perceived resuscitation stress remains empirically unresolved, and no validated Chinese instrument exists to measure resuscitation-specific perceived stress. This study aimed to translate the Perceived Stress during Resuscitation Scale (PSDRS) into Chinese, psychometrically evaluate its properties, and test its known-groups validity by comparing scores across novice, intermediate,

Correlation between traditional Chinese medicine constitution and occurrence of depressive symptoms in early pregnancy and early postpartum periods.

BACKGROUND: The impact of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) constitution on predicting perinatal depressive symptoms remains underexplored, particularly regarding its longitudinal association with postpartum outcomes and the mediating effect of antenatal depressive symptoms. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to examine the association between Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) constitution types during pregnancy and the risk of perinatal depressive symptoms, as well as to identify related influencing factors. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted, involving pregnant women at 10-14 we

Clinical Factors Associated with Pain During Outpatient Hysteroscopy in a Standardized Vaginoscopic Setting: A Prospective Observational Study.

Background: Outpatient hysteroscopy is the reference standard for the diagnosis and treatment of benign intrauterine pathology. Although several pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies have been proposed to reduce procedural pain, the clinical and procedural factors primarily determining patient tolerability in a standardized vaginoscopic setting remain incompletely understood. This prospective study aimed to identify the main predictors of pain, procedural tolerability, successful completion, and patient acceptance during outpatient hysteroscopy. Methods: A prospective observationa

Prevalence and Lifestyle Correlates of Premenstrual Syndrome and Its Severity Among Female University Students in Yemen: A Cross-Sectional Study of Dietary Habits and Qat Use.

Background Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a significant public health challenge that adversely affects the quality of life and academic performance of young women. While lifestyle factors are implicated in its etiology, evidence from populations experiencing protracted conflict and resource limitations is critically lacking. This study investigates the exploratory prevalence, symptom patterns, and modifiable lifestyle correlates of PMS severity among female university students in Yemen. Materials and methods In this cross-sectional study, 175 female students aged 15 to 25 from a university in

Barriers and delays in access to cleft surgery among children with cleft deformities in Rwanda: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Although timely surgery is essential for improving general health and psychosocial outcomes, delays in cleft surgery remain common in low- and middle-income countries, including Rwanda, where little is known about the underlying causes. This study aimed to explore the factors influencing delays in cleft surgery in Rwanda using the four-delay framework. DESIGN: A phenomenological qualitative study was conducted between April and July 2024. We conducted 29 in-depth interviews with 15 caregivers of children with orofacial clefts and 14 healthcare providers involved in cleft care. Tra

COVID-19 Infection and Professional Commitment Among Clinical Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study of Work Stress and Social Support in Eastern Taiwan.

Background/Objectives: Nurses in Taiwan faced markedly increased nurse-to-patient ratios and a high risk of occupational infection during the COVID-19 pandemic, generating considerable psychological and social strain. Professional commitment-reflecting nurses' identification with, investment in, and intention to remain in the profession-is important for workforce retention and care quality, yet little is known about how contracting COVID-19 affects it. This study examined whether COVID-19 infection and the presence of long COVID symptoms were associated with professional commitment among clini

Is Phenylalanine Restricted Dietary Treatment in Phenylketonuria Associated with Disordered Eating: A Systematic Review.

Background: In phenylketonuria (PKU), the lifelong phenylalanine (Phe)-restricted diet may contribute to altered feeding behaviours and disordered eating. The true prevalence of disordered eating and eating disorders remains uncertain, partly because validated PKU-specific assessment tools are lacking. This systematic review aimed to identify, appraise, and synthesise the evidence on disordered eating and eating disorders in PKU. Methods: Four electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane) were searched from inception to 24 February 2026. English-language studies reporting

From Abstainers to Dependent Drinkers: alcohol consumption patterns and risk factors among Portuguese university students.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol is the most prevalent psychoactive substance consumed around the world. In Portugal, alcohol consumption is deeply embedded in social and cultural practices, contributing to high prevalence rates among university students, with binge drinking emerging as a predominant consumption pattern. Despite the associations between this drinking behaviour and numerous social, physical, and psychological problems, research on alcohol consumption in Portuguese university populations remains limited. Thus, this study aimed to provide a comprehensive description of alcohol use patterns am

Construction and validation of a nomogram prediction model for the catheter-related thrombosis risk of central venous access devices in patients with cancer: a prospective machine learning study.

Central venous access devices (CVADs) are integral to cancer treatment. However, catheter-related thrombosis (CRT) poses a considerable risk to patient safety. It interrupts treatment; delays therapy; prolongs hospitalisation; and increases the physical, psychological and financial burden of patients. Our study aims to construct and validate a predictive model for CRT risk in patients with cancer. It offers the possibility to identify independent risk factors for CRT and prevent CRT in patients with cancer. We prospectively followed patients with cancer and CVAD at Xiangya Hospital of Central

Cluster analysis in gambling disorder based on sociodemographic, neuropsychological, and neuroendocrine features regulating energy homeostasis.

BACKGROUND: The heterogeneity of gambling disorder (GD) has led to the identification of different subtypes, mostly including phenotypic features, with distinctive implications on the GD severity and treatment outcome. However, clustering analyses based on potential endophenotypic features, such as neuropsychological and neuroendocrine factors, are scarce so far. AIMS: This study firstly aimed to identify empirical clusters in individuals with GD based on sociodemographic (i.e., age and sex), neuropsychological (i.e., cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control, decision making, working memory,

Biopsychosocial sequelae of chronically painful injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents contributing to non-recovery: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Claimants with chronically painful injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) undergo assessment and management influenced by insurance and medico-legal processes defined by a biomedical paradigm which is discordant with best evidence. We aim to demonstrate the impact of biopsychosocial factors on post-MVA sequelae which contribute to non-recovery. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of medico-legal documents and reports on 300 consecutive claimants referred to a pain medicine physician over 7 years (2012-2018) for assessment of painful musculoskeletal injurie

Relationship Between Age at Adult Height and Knee Mechanics During a Drop Vertical Jump in Men.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are relatively common among younger athletes, with significant physical, psychological, and financial consequences. Research has largely focused on female athletes by identifying specific risk factors for an ACL injury, including variation in pubertal growth timing. There is less known about risk factors in males, and little is known about the effects of pubertal development on ACL injury risk in men. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between an indicator of pubertal growth timing (age at adult h

Suicide prevention strategies revisited: 10-year systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Many countries are developing suicide prevention strategies for which up-to-date, high-quality evidence is required. We present updated evidence for the effectiveness of suicide prevention interventions since 2005. METHODS: We searched PubMed and the Cochrane Library using multiple terms related to suicide prevention for studies published between Jan 1, 2005, and Dec 31, 2014. We assessed seven interventions: public and physician education, media strategies, screening, restricting access to suicide means, treatments, and internet or hotline support. Data were extracted on primary
