Two cases of Tullio phenomenon in which oval and round window reinforcement surgery was effective.

AIM: To report the effect of oval and round window reinforcement surgery performed in two patients with the Tullio phenomenon. Case 1: A male with bilateral superior canal dehiscence syndrome. Downbeat nystagmus with leftward horizontal eye movement was recorded in an electronystagmogram using a pure-tone sound of 110dB at 2000 or 4000Hz in the right ear. Case 2: A female who had undergone stapes surgery. Computed tomography revealed an ossicular prosthesis in the vestibule. An audiogram indicated mild to moderate hearing impairment in the right ear. Leftward horizontal nystagmus was recorded

Association of posterior semicircular canal hypofunction on video-head-impulse testing with other vestibulo-cochlear deficits.

OBJECTIVES: The video-head-impulse test (vHIT) provides a functional assessment of all six semicircular canals (SCC). Occasionally isolated loss of the posterior canal(s) (ILPC) is diagnosed, though this finding is poorly characterized. Here we assessed how accurate that diagnosis is by measuring the co-occurrence of abnormalities on caloric irrigation, vestibular-evoked myogenic-potentials and audiometry. METHODS: We identified 52 patients with ILPC (unilateral=40, bilateral=12). We determined vHIT-gains and saccade-amplitudes and correlated vHIT-findings with other vestibulo-cochlear tests.

Inner-ear decompression sickness in nine trimix recreational divers.

INTRODUCTION: Recreational technical diving, including the use of helium-based mixes (trimix) and the experimentation of new decompression algorithms, has become increasingly popular. Inner-ear decompression sickness (DCS) can occur as an isolated clinical entity or as part of a multi-organ presentation in this population. Physiological characteristics of the inner ear make it selectively vulnerable to DCS. The inner ear has a slower gas washout than the brain thus potentially making it more vulnerable to deleterious effects of any bubbles that cross a persistent foramen ovale (PFO) and enter

Comparison of Tone Burst, Click and Chirp Stimulation in Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential Testing in Healthy People.

OBJECTIVE: Vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) is a clinical test used in the diagnosis of vestibular diseases. VEMP uses several stimulants to stimulate the vestibular system and measure myogenic potentials. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of tone burst, click, and chirp stimulation in VEMP on the latency and amplitude of myogenic potentials. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We compared the results of 78 ears from 39 volunteers. We measured the sternocleidomastoid muscle potential of each ear following a 500-Hz tone burst, click, and chirp stimulation while in a sitting positi

N-nitro-L-arginine, a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, aggravates iminodipropionitrile-induced neurobehavioral and vestibular toxicities in rats.

Exposure of iminodipropionitrile (IDPN) to rodents produces permanent behavioral syndrome characterized by repetitive head movements, circling and back walking. Other synthetic nitriles of industrial importance such as crotonitrile and allylnitrile are also able to produce similar motor deficits in experimental animals. However, due to the well-defined behavioral deficits and their easy quantification, IDPN-induced behavioral syndrome is a preferential animal model to test the interaction of various agents with synthetic nitriles. This study reports the effect of non-specific nitric oxide synt

Acute migrainous vertigo: clinical and oculographic findings.

Migrainous vertigo (MV) is an increasingly recognized cause of episodic vertigo. However, the pathophysiology of MV is still a matter of speculation and it is not known to what extent the dysfunction is located in the central or peripheral vestibular system. The aim of this prospective study was to describe the clinical spectrum of acute MV and to clarify which structures of the vestibular system are involved. Testing of 20 patients with acute MV included neuro-otological examination, recording of spontaneous and positional nystagmus with 3D video-oculography, and audiometry. Pathological nyst

Long-term changes in hippocampal n-methyl-D-aspartate receptor subunits following unilateral vestibular damage in rat.

Previous studies have indicated that damage to the peripheral vestibular system results in dysfunction of hippocampal place cells and an impairment of spatial learning and memory. The aim of this study was to determine whether lesions of one vestibular labyrinth (unilateral vestibular deafferentation, UVD) result in changes in the expression of the NR1 and NR2A subunits of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, and the GluR2 subunit of the alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionate receptor, in subregions of the rat hippocampus (CA1, CA2/3 and the dentate gyrus) at 10 h or 2 week

Effect of conductive hearing loss on the vestibulo-collic reflex.

The vestibulo-collic reflex represents a promising test for evaluating the integrity of otolith function. We have investigated the threshold of this response in a group of normal subjects, and the effect of a conductive hearing loss. A positive response was recorded in 31 of 32 normal subjects. The threshold of the vestibulo-collic reflex varied from 80 to 97 dBHL in these subjects with a 95% response rate at a threshold at 96 dBHL. A total of 23 ears with a conductive hearing loss in 17 patients were also investigated. The average conductive hearing loss (at 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 kHz) ranged from 8
