OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there is any need for woolgrowers to add diazinon to cyromazine jetting fluid to control active flystrike on sheep.
METHOD: Larval implants were placed on 143 sheep and allowed to develop for 2 days. Groups of 47 or 48 of these struck sheep were jetted with cyromazine at 1000 mg/L, diazinon at 400 mg/L, or a mixture of the two. After treatment, the implants were assessed daily for 3 days for the presence of feeding larvae.
RESULTS: When checked 1 day after treatment, there was a 62% reduction in flystrike in the diazinon treated sheep compared to only 12% redu

The efficacy of ivermectin administered orally at a dosage rate of 0.2 mg/kg liveweight against naturally acquired larval infestations of Oestrus ovis in sheep was 100% in a field trial. Ten sheep were free from infestation by first, second and third instar larvae of O. ovis 12 days post treatment, whereas 10 control sheep harboured 37.7 larvae on average, most of them first stage.

Hypodermosis is a parasitic disease of cattle caused by Hypoderma lineatum and H. bovis. It is an important health and welfare problem of infested cattle and a cause of considerable economic loss. In live animals, detection can be either by direct clinical examination of infested cattle and palpation of second and third stage larvae in the back or by the use of serological methods. This paper describes a competitive ELISA for the detection of antibodies to Hypoderma species in cattle sera. It has been validated using a small panel of 40 samples from clinically positive cattle and 200 samples f

In all, 2 groups of lambs were infected either with Oestrus ovis first-instar larvae or with 10,000 third-stage larvae (L3) of Haemonchus contortus. Another group of lambs was infected with both parasites. Fecal nematode egg counts, plasma pepsinogen concentrations, specific O. ovis enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) antibodies, and blood eosinophil counts were monitored and compared to with the values recorded for a control group of uninfected lambs. There was no significant difference between the burden of H. contortus found in mixed and single infections. However, the nematode egg pr

Resistance to organophosphorus (OP) insecticides in the Australian sheep blowfly has decreased the larvicidal effectiveness of several popular products used as dressings for flystrike. Laboratory bioassays in which near full-size Australian sheep blowfly larvae were immersed in flystrike dressings at registered concentrations for times ranging from 5 to 180 s indicated that none of the products was completely effective in killing highly OP-resistant larvae. Several products performed poorly, even against a susceptible population. Effectiveness did not always reflect the concentration of active

The increasing knowledge about endocrine mechanisms in arthropods facilitates the biorational search for drugs against insect pests and parasites that interfere with arthropod hormone action. Juvenile hormone mimics have been successfully applied for about 20 years; however, resistance to juvenile hormone analogues has developed. The introduction of moulting hormone agonists, which compete for binding to the ecdysteroid receptor, is expected in the near future. Despite the considerable progress that has been achieved in peptide hormone research during the last few years, no successful insectic

Seasonality and impact of parasitism by the larvae of Rogenhofera bonaerensis (Diptera: Cuterebridae) in pampean grassland mouse (Akodon azarae, Rodentia, Cricetidae) populations were studied in grasslands and cropfield borders near Diego Gaynor (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina), from November 1985 to December 1986. Trapped mice infections ranged from one larva (77%) to four (4%) per host; larvae occurred on tails (75.7%), backs (17.1%), thighs (5.7%), and abdomen (1.4%). Prevalence of larvae occurred in late spring (November and December) (35%), and in fall (March to June) (20%), with a peak

In the experiments on artificial infection the survival of larvae of Oestrus ovis L. in sheep with depressed, normal and stimulated immune system was studied. The maximum number of larvae survived in immune depressed animals (62.9%), the minimum number survived in immune stimulated animals (0.4%). For the estimation of specific immune response the reaction of indirect hemagglutination (IHA), the reaction of diffused precipitation (RDP) and the immune ferment analysis (ELISA) were used.

Ophthalmomyiasis interna posterior (OIP) means infection of the posterior part of the eye with the larvae of flies. Few cases have been reported in which the larvae have been removed from the eye and the visual acuity preserved. We report four cases of OIP with living larva in the vitreous cavity. The larvae produced severe uveitis and were removed alive with vitrectomy and a procedure for removing foreign bodies. They were identified as first-stage reindeer warble fly larvae (Oedemagena tarandi). We also observed dead larva in the vitreous cavity of a patient who suffered severe uveitis in 19…

Observations were carried out from May 1977 to May 1980 on occurrence, fauna, and seasonal dynamics of Gasterophilus spp. in 2,539 horses for butchering from all districts of the German Democratic Republic and also in 79 horses after control against gasterophilosis. 99.98% of the 13,742 second and third instar larvae of horses for butchering were Gasterophilus intestinalis, only 0.02% Gasterophilus nasalis. Out of 7,765 larvae passed after control measures Gasterophilus intestinalis dominated with more than 96%. Only in four districts of the German Democratic Republic Gasterophilus nasalis was

Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Schiner 1861) is the sole causative agent of vaginal myiasis in Bactrian camels, and its antennal sensilla serve as essential sensory organs for detecting environmental chemical cues. However, no systematic study has been reported on the morphology of antennal sensilla in male and female. Here, we examined and compared the antennal morphology of male and female W. magnifica using scanning electron microscopy. The antennae consist of 3 main segments, the scape, pedicel, and funiculus, with an arista arising from the funiculus. Four sensillum types were identified: chaetic…

Lucilia sericata, a dipteran fly, causes myiasis by infesting living or necrotic tissues and transmits mycobacterial infections to livestock. Its potential resistance to common insecticides underscores the need for integrated pest management strategies and highlights the importance of biopesticides. In this context, larvicidal effects of Citrus sinensis, Cymbopogon flexuosus, Achillea millefolium, Origanum onites, Salvia fruticosa, and Mentha piperita essential oils and biocapsulated ZnO nanoparticles were investigated to control Lucilia sericata vectors. Synthesized ZnO nanoparticles were cha…

Surveillance and diagnostics are critical for the early detection, containment and eradication of exotic pests. For the screwworm fly, this is usually via targeted surveillance and exclusion testing of trap-caught flies, as well as the identification of larvae associated with myiasis wounds. We present a specific and sensitive real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for the detection of the New World screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax Coquerel (Diptera: Calliphoridae). The assay targets the cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene from adult flies or larvae and retains high analyti…

Sporotrichosis is a mycotic disease caused by Sporothrix spp., whose zoonotic transmission by sick cats is the main infection route in Brazil. The aim of the current study is to report a human sporotrichosis outbreak caused by zoonotic transmission from a feline, with emphasis on the importance of making differential diagnosis and of using personal protective equipment. A hospital team member presented injury in the arm after having handled a cat that had been hospitalized for being hit by a car. The animal presented skin lacerations, myiasis, and full tibial fracture - there were no other sig…
