Alzheimer's Disease Risk Prediction and Pathogeny Extraction Using Fuzzy Graph Evolutionary Generative Adversarial Network.

Timely risk prediction of Alzheimer's disease (AD) holds significant clinical value. However, the inherent fuzziness of disease information hinders the deeper understanding of AD pathogenesis and limits the effectiveness of current predictive models. This article explores the staged evolutionary patterns of AD by integrating fuzzy graph-based disease modeling and deep learning. First, we use fuzzy graphs to quantify interpathogeny associations through fuzzy memberships. Second, we propose a fuzzy entropy propagation model to mathematically describe AD deterioration as the spread of fuzzy entro

A 3D Convolutional Neural Network Based on Non-enhanced Brain CT to Identify Patients with Brain Metastases.

Dedicated brain imaging for cancer patients is seldom recommended in the absence of symptoms. There is increasing availability of non-enhanced CT (NE-CT) of the brain, mainly owing to a wider utilization of Positron Emission Tomography-CT (PET-CT) in cancer staging. Brain metastases (BM) are often hard to diagnose on NE-CT. This work aims to develop a 3D Convolutional Neural Network (3D-CNN) based on brain NE-CT to distinguish patients with and without BM. We retrospectively included NE-CT scans for 100 patients with single or multiple BM and 100 patients without brain imaging abnormalities. P

M-AECA Net: A Mamba-Based Auxiliary Encoder With Cross-Attention Fusion Network for PET/CT Tumor Segmentation.

The combination of positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) can accurately reflect the metabolic and anatomical information of a variety of tumors, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma, lymphoma and lung cancer, which plays an important role in the diagnosis, staging and efficacy evaluation of tumors. Accurate and automatic delineation of target tumors is crucial for radiotherapy, however, the tumor segmentation task is extremely challenging due to the fuzzy tumor boundaries, uncertain locations, and the scattered distribution of multiple tumors throughout the body. Artificial Neural Networks for Bioimage Analysis.

Quantitative optical microscopy has grown to become an accepted methodology in biology and biomedical research labs. This technique has enabled new biological discoveries by relying on the computational analysis of microscopy datasets to provide a detailed look at the complex behavior and interactions of individual cells and molecules. However, as modern microscopy techniques evolve, the resulting datasets increase in both size and complexity, which has led to difficulties in scaling up with traditional analytical methods. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML)

Multimodal data integration to determine viral and innate immune kinetics in human airway epithelium.

Understanding the mechanisms that govern viral spread in human airway epithelium (HAE) remains a major challenge, particularly with regard to identifying and quantifying key factors such as cell type-specific infectivity, viral transmission paths, and the innate immune dynamics. Although mathematical models and experimental advances have provided valuable insights into respiratory infections, revealing the complex spatio-temporal interactions of infection and immune processes on a tissue-level have remained elusive. Here, we present a novel workflow that combines time-resolved bulk measurement

Learning geometric and visual features for medical image segmentation with vision GNN.

As a fundamental task, medical image segmentation plays a crucial role in various clinical applications. In recent years, deep learning-based segmentation methods have achieved significant success. However, these methods typically represent the image and objects within it as grid-structural data, while insufficient attention is given to relationships between the objects to segment. To address this issue, we propose a novel model called MedSegViG, which consists of a hierarchical encoder based on Vision GNN (ViG) and a hybrid feature decoder. During the segmentation process, our model first rep

[Research on surgical instrument segmentation algorithm based on frequency-domain adaptive feature decomposition and visual Mamba].

For the endoscopic surgical instrument segmentation task, existing methods have failed to address the semantic gap caused by the mismatch between high-frequency spatial details and low-frequency semantic features in the U-shaped network (U-Net) architecture. This study proposes a U-Net algorithm based on frequency-domain adaptive feature decomposition and visual Mamba, namely frequency-domain decoupling Mamba U-Net (FDMUNet), for surgical instrument segmentation. This algorithm embeds a frequency-domain adaptive feature enhancement module into the skip connections, and decomposes features into

Precise integration, derivation and prediction of experimentally obtained functional maps via the computation of self-organization model.

An ideal scientific theory should accurately compute the real-world data, and seamlessly integrate, derive and predict the experimental outcomes with a generalized simulation framework. However, in neuroscience - particularly in studying functional maps of the visual cortex - a significant gap persists due to individual diversity: each animal exhibits a unique map pattern, complicating the development of a universal computational model. In this study, we demonstrate that a Kohonen self-organizing model (SOM) bridges this gap through its intrinsic determinacy. Early-stage, coarse functional map

On the impact of input resolution on CNN-based gastrointestinal endoscopic image classification.

Gastric cancer (GC) remains a significant global health issue, and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have shown their high potential for detecting precancerous gastrointestinal (GI) conditions on endoscopic images [1] [2]. Despite the need for high resolution to capture the complexity of GI tissue patterns, the impact of endoscopic image resolution on the performance of these models remains underexplored. This study investigates how different image resolutions affect CNNs classification of intestinal metaplasia (IM) using two datasets with different resolutions and imaging modalities. Our r

Multi-dimensional consistency learning between 2D Swin U-Net and 3D U-Net for intestine segmentation from CT volume.

PURPOSE: The paper introduces a novel two-step network based on semi-supervised learning for intestine segmentation from CT volumes. The intestine folds in the abdomen with complex spatial structures and contact with neighboring organs that bring difficulty for accurate segmentation and labeling at the pixel level. We propose a multi-dimensional consistency learning method to reduce the insufficient intestine segmentation results caused by complex structures and the limited labeled dataset. METHODS: We designed a two-stage model to segment the intestine. In stage 1, a 2D Swin U-Net is trained

Motor imagery-based neural networks for assisting tetraplegic patients.

Nowadays, deep network-based classification algorithms are used in a myriad of applications for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). These interfaces can enhance the daily lives of quadriplegic patients. Electroencephalography (EEG) based motor imagery (MI) is an integral part of BCI, and the performance of the available deep classifiers is still limited. This paper presents a novel convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture designed to enhance the multiclass classification accuracy of motor imagery (MI) signals acquired through EEG-based sensing. We have selected the electrodes over the sen

Interactive segmentation for accurately isolating metastatic lesions from low-resolution, large-size bone scintigrams.

Objective.Bone is a common site for the metastasis of malignant tumors, and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) is widely used to detect these metastases. Accurate delineation of metastatic bone lesions in SPECT images is essential for developing treatment plans. However, current clinical practices rely on manual delineation by physicians, which is prone to variability and subjective interpretation. While computer-aided diagnosis systems have the potential to improve diagnostic efficiency, fully automated segmentation approaches frequently suffer from high false positive rates,

Flexible visually secure image encryption with meta-learning compression and chaotic systems.

As digital images are extensively applied across diverse domains, the demand for visually secure image encryption technology has surged remarkably. However, existing schemes generally suffer from insufficient encryption security and low-quality decrypted images. Therefore, this paper proposes a flexible scheme that integrates meta-learning, a chaotic system, traditional deep learning, and the LSB-2k correction embedding method. The core of this scheme lies in the design of a meta-learning compression reconstruction network with dynamic auxiliary input, which enables high-quality compression of

DCE-UNet: a transformer-based fully automated segmentation network for multiple adolescent spinal disorders in x-ray images.

In recent years, spinal x-ray image segmentation has played a vital role in the computer-aided diagnosis of various adolescent spinal disorders. However, due to the complex morphology of lesions and the fact that most existing methods are tailored to single-disease scenarios, current segmentation networks struggle to balance local detail preservation and global structural understanding across different disease types. As a result, they often suffer from limited accuracy, insufficient robustness, and poor adaptability. To address these challenges, we propose a novel fully automated spinal segmen

Attention-enhanced multiscale feature fusion network for pancreas and tumor segmentation.

BACKGROUND: Accurate pancreas and pancreatic tumor segmentation from abdominal scans is crucial for diagnosing and treating pancreatic diseases. Automated and reliable segmentation algorithms are highly desirable in both clinical practice and research. PURPOSE: Segmenting the pancreas and tumors is challenging due to their low contrast, irregular morphologies, and variable anatomical locations. Additionally, the substantial difference in size between the pancreas and small tumors makes this task difficult. This paper proposes an attention-enhanced multiscale feature fusion network (AMFF-Net)

Multi-scale consistent self-training network for semi-supervised orbital tumor segmentation.

PURPOSE: Segmentation of orbital tumors in CT images is of great significance for orbital tumor diagnosis, which is one of the most prevalent diseases of the eye. However, the large variety of tumor sizes and shapes makes the segmentation task very challenging, especially when the available annotation data is limited. METHODS: To this end, in this paper, we propose a multi-scale consistent self-training network (MSCINet) for semi-supervised orbital tumor segmentation. Specifically, we exploit the semantic-invariance features by enforcing the consistency between the predictions of different sc

Uncertainty quantification in multi-class segmentation: Comparison between Bayesian and non-Bayesian approaches in a clinical perspective.

BACKGROUND: Automatic segmentation techniques based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are widely adopted to automatically identify any structure of interest from a medical image, as they are not time consuming and not subject to high intra- and inter-operator variability. However, the adoption of these approaches in clinical practice is slowed down by some factors, such as the difficulty in providing an accurate quantification of their uncertainty. PURPOSE: This work aims to evaluate the uncertainty quantification provided by two Bayesian and two non-Bayesian approaches for a multi-clas
