Application of a navigation system for contouring anatomical plasty of the distal end of the humerus.

The effectiveness of navigation systems in performing accurate orthopaedic surgery has been reported previously, but there have been no reports on the application of navigation in surgeries involving bone resection around the elbow joint. In this study, anatomical plasty or bone resection was performed to restore anatomical morphology in 10 cases of osteoarthritis of the elbow and deformity of the distal end of the humerus. Bone resection was performed on the distal end of the humerus using navigation and on the proximal end of the ulna via freehand surgery. Postoperatively, the elbow function

Changes in knee adduction moment, pain, and functionality with a variable-stiffness walking shoe after 6 months.

This study tested the effects of variable-stiffness shoes on knee adduction moment, pain, and function in subjects with symptoms of medial compartment knee osteoarthritis over 6 months. Patients were randomly and blindly assigned to a variable-stiffness intervention or constant-stiffness control shoe. The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) score served as the primary outcome measure. Joint loading, the secondary outcome measure, was assessed using the external knee adduction moment. Peak external knee adduction moment, total WOMAC, and WOMAC pain scores were assessed at baseline

Intra-articular injection of collagenase induced experimental osteoarthritis of the lumbar facet joint in rats.

We aimed to establish an animal model to investigate primary osteoarthritis of the lumbar facet joints after collagenase injection in rats and its effects on chondrocyte apoptosis. We hypothesized that osteoarthritic-like changes would be induced by collagenase injection and that apoptosis of chondrocytes would increase. Collagenase (1, 10, or 50 U) or saline (control) was injected into the lumbar facet joints. The histology and histochemistry of cartilage, synovium, and subchondral bone were examined at 1, 3, and 6 weeks after surgery. Apoptotic cells induced by 1 U of collagenase were quanti

Large enthesophytes in teenage skulls: Mechanical, inflammatory and genetic considerations.

BACKGROUND: The literature implies that large enthesophytes are exclusive to genetically predisposed individuals and to Spondyloarthropathies sufferers. Accordingly, the aim of this investigation and report was to assess the involvement of genetic predisposition, inflammatory and/or mechanical influences in the development of large enthesophytes in a sample population of teenagers presenting with large enthesophytes emanating from the external occipital protuberance. METHODS: Analysis was based on four teenage males (13-16 year-old) possessing 14.5-30.5 mm enthesophytes projecting from the ex

Small subchondral drill holes improve marrow stimulation of articular cartilage defects.

BACKGROUND: Subchondral drilling is an established marrow stimulation technique. HYPOTHESIS: Osteochondral repair is improved when the subchondral bone is perforated with small drill holes, reflecting the physiological subchondral trabecular distance. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: A rectangular full-thickness chondral defect was created in the trochlea of adult sheep (n = 13) and treated with 6 subchondral drillings of either 1.0 mm (reflective of the trabecular distance) or 1.8 mm in diameter. Osteochondral repair was assessed after 6 months in vivo by macroscopic, hi

Navigator system guided endoscopic intraoral approach for remodelling of mandibular condyle in Garré syndrome.

In recent years, surgical trends showed an interest for minimally invasive surgery. Endoscopically assisted techniques were developed and widely reported. Endoscopic approaches can sometimes represent an alternative to traditional surgery. Such approaches minimize unwanted sequelae such unaesthetic scars and iatrogenic damage of facial nerve. In the reported case, the endoscopic approach and the navigator guide allowed reshaping of mandibular ramus up to the medial condilar surface, where an osteophite was present. To solve the intraarticular, mechanical obstacle, medial surface of mandibular

Electroacupuncture Inhibits Cartilage Degeneration in a Rat Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) Model by Suppressing ADAMTS5 Expression.

Background Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is characterized by cartilage degradation, osteophyte formation, and synovitis. Cartilage degradation in KOA begins with the loss of aggrecan, primarily due to A Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase with Thrombospondin Motif 5 (ADAMTS5), which is produced by chondrocytes and synovial cells and a key target for therapeutic intervention. Current treatments for KOA primarily focus on pain relief, as disease-modifying osteoarthritis drugs (DMOADs) remain unavailable. Electroacupuncture (EA), applying electrical stimulation to acupoints, has been investigated for i…

OGT regulates histone demethylation and alleviates osteoarthritis progression by O-GlcNAcylation of KDM6B.

OBJECTIVE: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common orthopedic disease characterized by cartilage degeneration, osteophyte formation, and synovial hyperplasia. Although dysregulated O-GlcNAcylation has been implicated in various musculoskeletal and inflammatory disorders, its specific role and molecular targets in OA pathogenesis remain largely unexplored. In this study, we aimed to conduct a multidimensional investigation to demonstrate and delineate the chondrocyte-specific functions and mechanisms of O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) during OA progression. METHODS: To explore the mechanisms of OA progress…
