A particular difficulty in discriminating between mirror images.

We investigated the selective impairment of mirror image discrimination in a patient with bilateral parieto-occipital lesions (FIM). We report a difficulty with the discrimination between mirror images more selective than has been previously reported (Turnbull OH, McCarthy RA. Failure to discriminate between mirror-image objects: a case of viewpoint-independent object recognition? Neurocase 1996;2:63). FIM was asked to judge, in five same/different experiments, whether pairs of simultaneously presented line drawings of objects were identical. FIM demonstrated only a minor impairment in discrim

The effect of face inversion on the human fusiform face area.

Inversion severely impairs the recognition of greyscale faces and the ability to see the stimulus as a face in two-tone Mooney images. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to study the effect of face inversion on the human fusiform face area (FFA). MR signal intensity from the FFA was reduced when greyscale faces were presented upside-down, but this effect was small and inconsistent across subjects when subjects were required to attend to both upright and inverted faces. However when two-tone faces were inverted, the MR signal from the FFA was substantially reduced for all subjects. W

Visuospatial working memory in patients with schizophrenia.

Recent investigations have documented abnormalities in working memory related processes in schizophrenics on tasks assessing the central executive component of this cognitive model. This preliminary study investigated the function of another component of the working memory system, the visuospatial scratch pad in schizophrenia. The "scratch pad's" passive visual store--responsible for the temporary retention of visual material--was assessed via a computerized spatial delayed response task, whereas its active spatial rehearsal subsystem--specialized for retaining the temporal properties--was exp

Broad-band visual capacities are not selectively impaired in Alzheimer's disease.

Histological examination of the optic nerves of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients has revealed a selective degeneration of large axon ganglion cells. This morphological abnormality raises the possibility of a selective impairment of broad-band channel visual function. To test this hypothesis, we administered visual psychophysical tests associated with either the color-opponent or the broad-band retinocortical channel to 14 AD patients and 29 elderly control subjects (ECS). In previous studies in monkeys, these tests had been sensitive to the effects of either parvocellular or magnocellular LGN

Syndromes of acquired dyslexia and patterns of recovery: a 6- to 10-year follow-up study of seven brain-injured people.

Seven subjects who were neurologically impaired following encephalitis (n = 2), head injury (n = 3), and stroke (n = 2) were referred several years previously because of acquired dyslexia. Two were almost totally alexic, 2 were surface dyslexic, 2 were deep dyslexic and 1 was a letter-by-letter reader. Following a period of rehabilitation, the 2 with alexia became surface dyslexic and letter-by-letter readers; 1 of the deep dyslexics showed some improvements but remained a deep dyslexic; and the letter-by-letter reader learned to read more quickly. At follow-up, 6 to 10 years later, there had

Perceptual and associative knowledge in category specific impairment of semantic memory: a study of two cases.

We report two head-injured patients whose knowledge of living things was selectively disrupted. Their semantic knowledge was tested with naming and verbal comprehension tasks and a verbal questionnaire. In all of them there was consistent evidence that knowledge of living things was impaired and that of non-living things was relatively preserved. The living things deficit emerged irrespective of whether the question tapped associative or perceptual knowledge or required visual or non visual information. In all tasks the category effect was still significant after the influence on the performan

Cerebral specialization for speech perception and movement organization in adults with Down's syndrome.

Adults with Down's syndrome and a group of undifferentiated mentally handicapped persons were examined using a free recall dichotic listening procedure to determine a laterality index for the perception of speech sounds. Subjects also performed both the visual and verbal portions of a standard apraxia battery. As in previous research, subjects with Down's syndrome tended to display a left ear advantage on the dichotic listening test. As well, they performed better on the apraxia battery when movements were cued visually rather than verbally. This verbal-motor disadvantage increased as the left

Visual recognition memory in drug-exposed infants.

Visual recognition memory testing in high-risk infants has been shown to have significant predictive ability for later cognitive deficits. This study evaluated cognition in infants exposed prenatally to illicit stimulant drugs compared with nonexposed controls with a standardized test of visual recognition, the Fagan Test of Infant Intelligence (FTII). Thirty-six healthy, full-term infants with prenatal exposure to cocaine and/or amphetamines and 26 infants with no drug exposures, matched for race and socioeconomic status, were tested. Average FTII scores were significantly lower and the perce

Haloperidol and cognitive shifting.

In this study haloperidol appeared to affect the performance on a selected category of cognitive tasks considered to represent shifting aptitude. A pretest--post-test design was used with two groups of subjects: 17 patients suffering from idiopathic spasmodic torticollis, and 17 controls who were matched for age and intelligence. The results are discussed in relation to previous findings on haloperidol and cognition, shifting disorder in Parkinson's disease and changes in behavioural organization found in animals with an experimentally induced dopaminergic hypoactivity.

Autonomic recognition of names and faces in prosopagnosia: a neuropsychological application of the Guilty Knowledge Test.

A prosopagnosic was shown two sets of faces, one comprised of famous personalities, the other of family members. After he was allowed to visually inspect each face, he was given five names, one of which was correct. Skin conductance was continuously recorded. He could not identify any of the faces spontaneously, and performed at chance level when given multiple choice names. However, electrodermal responses indicated far more accurate discrimination between correct and incorrect names, suggesting that the patient "recognized" facial identity at the psychophysiological level. Neuropsychological

Familiarity and recollection vs representational models of medial temporal lobe structures: A single-case study.

Although it is known that medial temporal lobe (MTL) structures support declarative memory, the fact these structures have different architectonics and circuitry suggests they may also play different functional roles. Selective lesions of MTL structures offer an opportunity to understand these roles. We report, in this study, on JMG, a patient who presents highly unusual lesions that completely affected all MTL structures except for the right hippocampus and parts of neighbouring medial parahippocampal cortex. We first demonstrate that JMG shows preserved recall for visual material on 5 experi

Non-organic visual loss in children: prospective and retrospective analysis of associated psychosocial problems and stress factors.

PURPOSE: To report on the prevalence of non-organic visual loss (NOVL) and its associated psychopathology and psychosocial stress factors on children presenting with visual problems without an obvious cause at a routine ophthalmological examination. METHODS: One hundred and seventy children presented at our paediatric ophthalmology department between 2007 and 2014 with visual loss. Routine examination showed no obvious underlying cause. Pattern-onset visual-evoked potentials (pVEPs) were performed to obtain an objective visual assessment. Selected patients underwent more investigations, and f

Demonstrating correction of low levels of astigmatism with realistic scenes.

PURPOSE AND METHOD: Modern standard visual acuity tests are primarily designed as diagnostic tools for use during subjective refraction and normally bear little relation to real-world situations. We have developed a methodology to create realistic rendered scenes that demonstrate potential vision improvement in a relevant and engaging way. Low-cylindrical refractive error can be made more noticeable by optimizing the contrast and spatial frequencies, and by testing four different visual perception skills: motion tracking, pattern recognition, visual clutter differentiation and contrast sensiti…

Characterizing the development of visual search expertise in pathology residents viewing whole slide images.

The goal of this study was to examine and characterize changes in the ways that pathology residents examine digital whole slide images as they progress through the residency training. A series of 20 digitized breast biopsy whole slide images (half benign and half malignant biopsies) were individually shown to 4 pathology residents at four points in time--at the beginning of their first, second, third, and fourth years of residency. Their task was to examine each image and select three areas that they would most want to zoom in on in order to view the diagnostic detail at higher resolution. Eye

A novel approach to probabilistic biomarker-based classification using functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

Pattern recognition approaches to the analysis of neuroimaging data have brought new applications such as the classification of patients and healthy controls within reach. In our view, the reliance on expensive neuroimaging techniques which are not well tolerated by many patient groups and the inability of most current biomarker algorithms to accommodate information about prior class frequencies (such as a disorder's prevalence in the general population) are key factors limiting practical application. To overcome both limitations, we propose a probabilistic pattern recognition approach based o

Amygdala and nucleus accumbens activation to emotional facial expressions in children and adolescents at risk for major depression.

OBJECTIVE: Offspring of parents with major depressive disorder face a threefold higher risk for major depression than offspring without such family histories. Although major depression is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, neural correlates of risk for major depression remain poorly understood. This study compares amygdala and nucleus accumbens activation in children and adolescents at high and low risk for major depression under varying attentional and emotional conditions. METHOD: Thirty-nine juveniles, 17 offspring of parents with major depression (high-risk group) and 22 offs

Interhemispheric neural summation in the split brain: effects of stimulus colour and task.

Four split-brained subjects, two subjects with agenesis of the corpus callosum, and 14 normal subjects performed two tasks requiring responses to red or green disks, briefly presented either singly in the left visual field, singly in the right visual field, or simultaneously in both visual fields. In Experiment 1, simple reaction times to these stimuli, regardless of colour, were recorded (the Go-Both Task), and found to be faster to bilateral-redundant stimulus pairs, than to single stimuli. This so-called "redundancy gain" was much larger for acallosal or split-brained subjects than for norm

Phonological Priming in Children with Hearing Loss: Effect of Speech Mode, Fidelity, and Lexical Status.

OBJECTIVES: This research determined (1) how phonological priming of picture naming was affected by the mode (auditory-visual [AV] versus auditory), fidelity (intact versus nonintact auditory onsets), and lexical status (words versus nonwords) of speech stimuli in children with prelingual sensorineural hearing impairment (CHI) versus children with normal hearing (CNH) and (2) how the degree of HI, auditory word recognition, and age influenced results in CHI. Note that the AV stimuli were not the traditional bimodal input but instead they consisted of an intact consonant/rhyme in the visual tra

Procedure for the semi-automatic detection of gastro-oesophageal reflux patterns in intraluminal impedance measurements in infants.

The diagnosis of gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR) is of great interest for paediatric gastroenterologists. pH monitoring is the commonly used procedure for GOR diagnosis but a major amount of postprandial GOR is missed due to the mostly non-acidic gastric contents in infants. The multiple intraluminal impedance technique is based on the recording of the impedance changes during bolus transport inside the oesophagus. It is the first method which allows the pH-independent, long-term registration of GOR. The use of the impedance technology in clinical practice has been limited so far by the time-c

Impact of dance therapy on children with specific learning disability: a two-arm cluster randomized control study on an Italian sample.

BACKGROUND: Dance therapy can improve the quality of life of a person with several conditions, especially psychological well-being and quality of life, in the short and long-term. The aim of the study was to examine the effects of the dance therapy (DT) on specific learning disability (SLD) children. We wanted to test the impact on cognitive and emotional patterns on children with learning disorders. METHODS: A two-arm cluster randomized control study was applied comparing 2 groups of SLD children (treated vs. non-treated). All children have been measured applying psychological battery before
