Purification and in vitro growth of human epidermal basal keratinocytes using a monoclonal antibody.

We have made a new monoclonal antibody, EL-2, and used it with an immunorosetting procedure combined with Ficoll-Hypaque gradient centrifuga … l cell carcinomas. EL-2 stained only the basal layer of lesional skin from patients with psoriasis, pityriasis rubra pilaris, and Darier's disease. Purification of basal keratinocytes will be important in biochemical and functional studies of normal skin and in establishing long-term keratinocyte lines from normal cells.

Translational evaluation of magnetized saline water combined with ciclopirox olamine and piroctone olamine against Malassezia species and scalp seborrheic dermatitis.

Yeasts of the Malassezia genus are implicated in numerous skin conditions, including seborrheic dermatitis, pityriasis versicolor, and folliculitis. While ciclopirox olamine (CPO) and piroctone olamine (OCT) are effective anti-Malassezia agents, the activity of magnetized water against pathogenic yeasts remains unclear. The aim of this study was to examine the in vitro efficacy of magnetized saline water (MSW), alone or combined with CPO plus OCT, against three Malassezia species (M. furfur, M. globosa, and M. restricta) using broth microdilution to determine minimal inhibitory concentrations …

Diverse Colonisation and Disease Associations of the Human Commensal Malassezia: Our Body's Secret Tenant.

A niche in the context of microorganisms defines the specific ecological role or habitat inhabited by microbial species within an ecosystem. For the human commensal Malassezia, the skin surface is considered its primary niche, where it adapts to the skin environment by utilising lipids as its main carbon and energy source. However pathogenic characteristics of Malassezia include the production of allergens, immune modulation and excessive lipid utilisation, which result in several diseases such as pityriasis versicolor, seborrheic dermatitis, Malassezia folliculitis and atopic dermatitis. Rece…

Clinicopathologic assessment of secondary syphilis avoids misdiagnosis: results of comprehensive evaluation of 114 cases.

INTRODUCTION: Secondary syphilis is well-known for its protean cutaneous manifestations and therefore very easy to be misdiagnosed. AIM: Th … lopapules were more likely to have 6 or fewer features, which were not only easily misdiagnosed for pityriasis rosea, tinea and erythema multiforme, but also mostly taken from the trunk and genitalia. Atypical morphologies can be combined with plasma cell infiltration and T. pallidum immunohistochemical stain to confirm the diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: In this s …

Molecular epidemiology, in vitro susceptibility and exoenzyme screening of Malassezia clinical isolates.

Introduction. Malassezia folliculitis (MF) and pityriasis versicolor (PV) are common dermatoses caused by Malassezia species. Their molecular epidemiology, drug susceptibility and exoenzymes are rarely reported in China.Aim. To investigate the molecular epidemiology, drug susceptibility and enzymatic profile of Malassezia clinical isolates.Methodology. Malassezia strains were recovered from MF and PV patients and healthy subjects (HS) and identified by sequencing analysis. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of nine antifungals (posaconazole, voriconazole, itraconazole, fluconazole, k…

Luliconazole, a new antifungal against Candida species isolated from different sources.

OBJECTIVE: Luliconazole is an inhibitor for sterol 14-α-demethylase in fungal cells with a broad-spectrum antifungal activity against dermatophytes, Candida albicans, Malassezia species, dematiaceous and hyaline hyphomycetes. Furthermore, luliconazole has been clinically used for the treatment of pityriasis versicolor, dermatophytosis, onychomycosis, cutaneous and mucocutaneous candidiasis. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate in vitro antifungal activity of luliconazole against several strains of Candida species recovered from different clinical materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the…

The Dominican Republic (DR) is the second largest Caribbean nation and, with Haiti, the DR accounts for nearly three-quarters of the cases o … ses. Four cases of histoplasmosis and several cases of chromoblastomycosis have also been reported. Pityriasis versicolor and tinea capitis are frequent in children, and 11% have kerion. Local epidemiological investigations are urgently required to validate or modify these estimates of serious fungal infections in the DR.

Skin manifestations in AIDS patients.

Skin lesions occur in virtually all patients during the unfolding evolution of their HIV infection--usually a succession of conditions reflecting the gradual decline of immunity. Hairy leucoplakia can occur at any stage and in all risk groups. Kaposi's sarcoma is seen only in homosexually acquired AIDS. A transient rash may accompany the initial HIV seroconversion illness, but may go unnoticed. Documented examples show macular red oval lesions, similar to pityriasis rosea, but extending onto the face, palms and soles, preceded by a flu-like illness with lymphadenopathy and lymphopenia simulati…

Poikilodermatous Mycosis Fungoides: Comparative Study of Clinical, Histopathological and Immunohistochemical Features.

BACKGROUND: Poikilodermatous mycosis fungoides (pMF) is characterized by poikiloderma areas, typically involving the major flexural areas and trunk. Its presentation can be generalized or admixed with other forms of MF. Previous studies fail to correlate the clinical presentation with prognosis and laboratory findings. Some reports show pityriasis lichenoides chronica (PLC) preceding the poikiloderma. OBJECTIVES: Correlate prognostic, histopathological and molecular aspects of pMF with its clinical presentation. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 14 cases of generalized pMF (GpMF), 22 of loc…

Biopsying parapsoriasis: quo vadis? Are morphological stains enough or are ancillary tests needed?

BACKGROUND: Parapsoriasis represents a group of cutaneous disorders that shows variable clinical aspects somehow resembling to psoriasis, how is reflecting by its name. It was first named by Brocq, in 1902, as an entity with three components: pityriasis lichenoides, small plaque parapsoriasis and large plaque parapsoriasis. Nowadays, under the name of parapsoriasis are included only the last two categories, that are considered disorders characterized by the presence of a mononuclear infiltrate in the dermis, composed of T-cells. Until now, there were not established pathognomonic histopatholog…
