It is widely assumed that barren Strongyloides stercoralis occurring in chronically infected carriers can become fecund when immunity wanes. Evidence for this involves corticosteroid treatment of hosts harboring occult infections that subsequently return to patency. However, nematodes have ecdysteroid receptors, and it has been suggested that corticosteroids act directly on the parasite, inducing autoinfective development, rather than indirectly by suppressing host immunity. To test these competing concepts, barren females were recovered from donor dogs when the dogs' fecal examinations turned

Pathogenesis and pathology of alimentary system of man infected with Strongyloides stercoralis are shown. Allergic, macroscopic lesions of duodenal, small and large intestinal walls, existing in different clinical strongyloidosis types are discussed. The role of endo-autoinfection in the course of strongyloidosis in the immunocompromised patients with fatal disseminated strongyloidosis is shown. In disseminated strongyloidosis lesions include stomach, liver and rarely pancreas. Pathogenesis of macroscopic and microscopic lesions in respiratory, circulatory and central nervous systems of a man

We report a case of Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection syndrome in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome with CNS involvement who died despite prompt institution of thiabendazole.

The prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis and other enteroparasites was studied in Menoufia Governorate. 565 stool & 500 serum samples were examined by direct smear, zinc sulphate, stool culture & IFAT using ultrasonicated non digested non fixed filariform larva as antigen. IFAT proved superior than the direct methods since it detected 11.1% of cases while the latter detected only up to 3.4%. The prevalence of enteroparasites was found to be 62.3%. E. histolytica and A. lumbricoides showed the highest incidence while Taenia showed the lowest incidence.

The efficacy of ivermectin against the somatic larval stages of Strongyloides ransomi was evaluated in three trials involving 35 pregnant gilts harbouring induced infections. Treatment at a rate of 300 micrograms/kg bodyweight subcutaneously, four to 16 days before farrowing, was highly effective as judged by counts of larvae in milk and worm burdens of piglets.

Twenty-eight foals whose dams were treated IM with ivermectin (200 micrograms/kg of body weight) on the day of parturition were compared with 35 foals whose dams were administered only the vehicle. The effect of ivermectin on the vertical transmission of Strongyloides westeri and foal heat diarrhea was determined by a comparison of results obtained in the 2 groups. Foals from treated mares had significantly fewer S westeri eggs per gram of feces from 17 to 28 days postpartum. There were no differences observed in the frequencies of severity of foal heat diarrhea between the treated and control

Charcot-Leyden crystals (CLC), formed in vitro from human eosinophils, were recently shown to contain a protein identical in physicochemical characteristics to human eosinophil lysophospholipase. Monospecific antisera, prepared against homogeneous, chromatographically purified eosinophil lysophospholipase and against CLC formed in vitro, yielded precipitin lines fusing in a pattern of immunochemical identity on Ouchterlony analysis with disrupted eosinophils, purified lysophospholipase, and solubilized CLC protein. With antisera to the purified lysophospholipase, CLC present in vivo in human f

Disease producing worms are worldwide in distribution. The worms of significance in North America are the nematodes and the cestodes. Diagnosis is rarely made on clinical grounds alone because the clinical presentation of infection varies widely. Examination of stool for ova is usually the definitive diagnostic step. Follow-up stool examination several weeks after treatment is mandatory. The clinical findings pertaining to each type of worm and the recommended treatment are delineated.
