Midazolam decreases cerebral blood flow in the left prefrontal cortex in a dose-dependent fashion.

Midazolam, a short-lived benzodiazepine producing sedation and reversible anterograde amnesia, was administered intravenously to 14 healthy male volunteers. Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was measured using positron emission tomography (PET) with intravenous H2 15O at either a 'high' midazolam EEG effect (EEG signs of stage 2 sleep), or 'low' midazolam EEG effect (increase in EEG beta power only). Memory tests administered following PET scans showed significant drug-induced impairment in learning and retrieval at the same drug concentration at which PET images were acquired. Statistical p

Neuropsychological correlates of domestic violence.

Neuropsychological functioning was assessed in 39 males who had committed domestic violence (batterers) and compared to 63 nonviolent (both maritally discordant and satisfied) subjects recruited by advertisement. Subjects were subsequently divided into two groups (head injured, nonhead injured) and these groups were also contrasted as a function of batterer status. Tests were administered to assess for cognitive and behavioral functions, including executive dysfunction, hypothesized to be a factor contributing to propensity for violence. Questionnaires and structured clinical interviews were u

Verbal and visual problems in reading disability.

Most individuals interested in reading disability favor the view that disordered language processing is the main cause of children's reading problems and that visual problems are seldom, if ever, responsible. Nevertheless, in a preliminary study (Eden, Stein, & Wood, 1993) we showed that visuospatial and oculomotor tests can be used to differentiate children with reading disabilities from nondisabled children. In the present study we investigated a larger sample of children to see if these findings held true. Using 93 children from the Bowman Gray Learning Disability Project (mean age = 11.3 y

Using independence training to teach independent living skills to children and young men with visual impairments.

Two groups of students with visual impairments were taught various independent living skills. Of the 7 students, 5 also had a diagnosis of mental retardation. One group (3 first graders) was taught the tasks of folding a shirt, making an emergency telephone call, and spreading soft foods with a knife. The other group (4 young men) was taught to increase leisure skills through three different leather-work tasks. Independence training was conducted in a group format and included social learning components (e.g., self-evaluation, peer evaluation and reinforcement) in addition to traditional opera

The effect of maternal employment during preschool years on school readiness.

Many children referred because of 'learning disability' have mothers in full-time employment. This study was undertaken to examine the effect of maternal employment on school readiness. One hundred and seven children were studied. Forty-six were the offspring of women who had not gone out to work since the birth of the child (group A). The mothers of the other 61 had worked for 1 year or more during the lifetime of the child (group B). The mother of each child completed a detailed questionnaire. Each child was subjected to standardized tests of reasoning, numerical ability, Gestalt, verbal com

Towards semantic brain-computer interfacing: The graded inventory of semantic triggers (GIST) paradigm.

Semantic Brain-Computer Interfaces (sBCIs) aim to decode conceptual information directly from neural activity, enabling more efficient and natural communication for individuals with severe motor impairments. However, existing approaches are often confounded by stimulus-driven perceptual processes and lack a reliable means of tagging the moment of concept formation. We introduce the Graded Inventory of Semantic Triggers (GIST), a novel electroencephalography (EEG) paradigm designed to elicit semantic retrieval from graded verbal clues with precise temporal alignment.

A unified multimodal learning framework for sentiment analysis and mental health indicators from YouTube videos.

This study presents a multimodal deep learning framework designed to analyze sentiment patterns in YouTube videos and explore their association with early indicators of mental well-being. The approach integrates textual transcripts, vocal characteristics, and facial expressions into a unified representation to capture the emotional depth that individual modalities often miss. The model was trained and evaluated on a curated dataset of diverse YouTube content, and the results consistently showed that the fused architecture performed better than unimodal baselines. Compared with text-only or aud

Instructional design communication through AI-assisted storytelling: a hybrid model grounded in educational psychology.

INTRODUCTION: Artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted storytelling is increasingly transforming educational communication and instructional design, particularly in isolated and remote learning environments. However, challenges related to collaboration, meaningful interaction, technological accessibility, and ethical use remain. Drawing on educational psychology, this study investigates how AI-assisted storytelling communication strategies can support cognitive engagement, motivation, creativity, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement in AI-supported educational communication systems. It also

Action observation as a treatment option for fear avoidance behavior in chronic spinal pain.

Psychological factors play an essential role in the maintenance of various chronic pain states, with fear avoidance beliefs contributing to significant functional limitation and disability in chronic spinal pain. Fear avoidance behaviors are typically managed with cognitive-behavioral interventions such as graded exposure to feared movements and graded activity programs. However, attempts to make patients with high pain-related fear perform painful actions using graded exposure therapy can be very challenging. These fear avoidance beliefs in individuals with pain are usually acquired through p

Reductions in Corpus Callosum Volume Partially Mediate Effects of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure on IQ.

Disproportionate volume reductions in the basal ganglia, corpus callosum (CC) and hippocampus have been reported in children with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE). However, few studies have investigated these reductions in high prevalence communities, such as the Western Cape Province of South Africa, and only one study made use of manual tracing, the gold standard of volumetric analysis. The present study examined the effects of PAE on subcortical neuroanatomy using manual tracing and the relation of volumetric reductions in these regions to IQ and performance on the California Verbal Learning…

Semantic memory navigation in mild cognitive impairment: Automated markers with neural and biofluid correlates.

Verbal fluency tasks are ubiquitous in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) screenings. Yet, their assessment is traditionally limited to valid response counts. This subjective approach constrains analysis to univariate methods and overlooks which semantic memory dimensions are affected, introducing human bias while limiting informativeness. We tackled these gaps with a novel automated framework. Ninety-six participants (53 with MCI, 43 cognitively unimpaired individuals) performed phonemic and semantic fluency tasks alongside standard cognitive tests. Word properties (e.g., frequency, granularity,

Multimodal machine learning for deception detection using behavioral and physiological data.

Deception detection is crucial in domains like national security, privacy, judiciary, and courtroom trials. Differentiating truth from lies is inherently challenging due to many complex, diversified behavioural, physiological and cognitive aspects. Traditional lie detector tests (polygraphs) have been widely used but remain controversial due to scientific, ethical, and practical concerns. With advancements in machine learning, deception detection can be automated. However, existing secondary datasets are limited-they are small, unimodal, and predominantly based on non-Indian populations. To ad

Deciphering the mechanisms: Pathophysiology of migraine-related cognitive dysfunction.

Migraine is increasingly understood as a disorder of brain network dysfunction, where attack-related cognitive symptoms (attention deficits, slowed processing speed and executive dysfunction) can be as disabling as pain and may persist into the interictal period. Such symptoms are associated with functional and structural changes across the migraine cycle, involving the prefrontal cortex, thalamus, hypothalamus, hippocampus and cerebellum. Interictal deficits in working memory, visuospatial processing, verbal fluency and executive function are also documented. Rodent models show impairments in
