A growing body of literature suggests the inner ear vestibular system has a substantial impact on cognitive function. The strongest evidence exists in connecting vestibular function to the cognitive domain of visuospatial ability, which includes spatial memory, navigation, mental rotation, and mental representation of three-dimensional space. Substantial evidence also exists suggesting the vestibular system has an impact on attention and cognitive processing ability. The cognitive domains of memory and executive function are also implicated in a number of studies. We will review the current li

Pre-operative and postoperative auditory function was reviewed retrospectively in 98 patients with vestibular schwannomas. According to their hormonal status, women were categorized as "premenopausal" and "postmenopausal". Before surgery, 48% of the women (65% premenopausal) and 16% of the men presented with sudden hearing loss. The degree of auditory function before operation was similar for women and men. Preservation of pre-operative hearing was possible for 41% of the women (21% premenopausal) and 59% of the men. Further details of the surgery and the results of histopathological examinati

We are creating a bank of EBV immortalized lymphoblast cells and extracted DNA taken from the blood of deaf children and their relatives, in order to study the molecular basis of hereditary deafness. We have established a corresponding database for sensorineural hearing loss that records clinical data for each entered specimen. The purpose of this paper is to present the content and design of the computerized relational database. The data model is designed first to identify known etiologies of deafness, either acquired or syndromic, and then to characterize the clinical features of the deaf in

Ten obligate carriers of Usher syndrome type 2A from 5 different families with 2 affected persons all underwent audiologic, vestibular and ophthalmologic examinations. They had a sensorineural hearing loss which was in excess of that expected for their age at all of the frequencies (0.25-8 kHz) tested, however, only a 10 dB (average) excess in hearing loss at 0.25-0.5 kHz proved to be significant. The speech discrimination scores obtained conformed with the hearing thresholds. Tympanometry, acoustic reflex and brain stem auditory-evoked potential findings were generally normal. Some vestibular

The human vestibular sensory epithelia of the macula utriculi were examined ultrastructurally in 13 cases with acoustic neurinoma. The sensory epithelia were fairly well preserved, with several morphological changes such as lipofuscin granules, intraepithelial cysts, pyknosis, vacuoles, laminated structures, banded structures and degeneration of subepithelial myelinated nerves evident. The pathological significance of these findings was discussed. There were thickened irregular membrane formations in spaces between the nerve calyces and type I hair cells which might be related to acoustic neur

Hyoscine (scopolamine) is a competitive inhibitor of the muscarinic receptors of acetylcholine and it has been shown to be one of the most effective agents for preventing motion sickness. However, a relatively high incidence of side effects and a short duration of action has restricted the usefulness of this agent when administered orally or parenterally, and to counter this a novel transdermal preparation of hyoscine has been developed. Pharmacokinetic studies indicate that this new method for administering hyoscine controls the absorption process and the rate of drug entry into the systemic

PURPOSE: Vestibular rehabilitation exercises have been proven to reduce symptoms and diminish the risk of falls in those with dizziness and balance impairments. The first purpose of this study is to investigate a new method of measuring head movements during habituation vestibular rehabilitation exercises. The second is to explore the relationship between head acceleration measurements during select traditional vestibular rehabilitation exercises and the variables of age, dizziness, and poor balance confidence.
RESEARCH DESIGN: A descriptive, cross-sectional study, in a university setting.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the presence of the N3 potential (acoustically evoked short latency negative response) in profound sensorineural hearing loss, its association with the cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential and the relationship between both potentials and loss of auditory function.
METHODS: Otological examinations of 66 ears from 50 patients aged from 4 to 36 years were performed, and the vestibular evoked myogenic potential and auditory brainstem response were measured.
RESULTS: The N3 potential was recorded in 36 out of 66 ears (55 per cent) and a vestibular

On a Balance Master computerized force plate static and dynamic postural control was measured in 24 severe hearing-impaired patients before and after CI surgery, and 19 healthy adults in a prospective study. The test battery consisted of the modified clinical test of sensory interaction on balance, the Rhythmic Weight Shift, the Walk Across, and the Tandem Walk test. Postural control was significantly worse in CI candidates than in healthy adults. In contrast, caloric testing of the vestibular organ was normal in the majority of CI candidates and remained normal after CI surgery. Static and dy

Bilateral vestibulopathy, i.e. decreased peripheral vestibular function affecting both ears, is characterized by unsteadiness of gait, particularly in darkness and by motion-induced oscillopsia. We have recently seen a few patients with severely impaired semicircular canal function albeit with rather normal vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP) suggesting normal saccular function. The five young patients, mean age 27 years (range 15-45), 4 males and 1 female, had severely impaired balance in darkness and they all reported walking-induced vertical oscillopsia. Hence, these patients with

It has long been known that the major irreversible toxicity of aminoglycosides is ototoxicity. Among them, streptomycin and gentamicin are primarily vestibulotoxic, whereas amikacin, neomycin, dihydrosterptomycin, and kanamicin are primarily cochleotoxic. Cochlear damage can produce permanent hearing loss, and damage to the vestibular apparatus results in dizziness, ataxia, and/or nystagmus. Aminoglycosides appear to generate free radicals within the inner ear, with subsequent permanent damage to sensory cells and neurons, resulting in permanent hearing loss. Two mutations in the mitochondrial

The Dlx5 gene encodes a Distal-less-related DNA-binding homeobox protein first expressed during early embryonic development in anterior regions of the mouse embryo. In later developmental stages, it appears in the branchial arches, the otic and olfactory placodes and their derivatives, in restricted brain regions, in all extending appendages and in all developing bones. We have created a null allele of the mouse Dlx5 gene by replacing exons I and II with the E. coli lacZ gene. Heterozygous mice appear normal. Beta-galactosidase activity in Dlx5+/- embryos and newborn animals reproduces the kno

The temporal bones of a newborn infant with hydantoin syndrome showed multiple middle ear and inner ear anomalies. There was a constellation of bony and membranous defects involving the oval and round windows, cochlear ducts, cochlear aqueducts, endolymphatic ducts and sacs, and vestibular labyrinths. To the authors' knowledge, supernumerary vestibular sensory epithelial structures and an inner ear epidermoid cyst have not been previously reported. Wide communications between the subarachnoid space and inner ear were of surgical relevance.

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear implantation (CI) has been reported to negatively affect vestibular function. The study of vestibular function has variably been conducted using different types of diagnostic tools. The combined use of modern, rapidly performing diagnostic tools could prove useful for standardization of the evaluation protocol.
METHODS: In a group of 28 subjects undergoing CI, the video head impulse test (vHIT), the cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMP) and the short form of the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) questionnaire were investigated preoperatively and postop

Specific pharmacological blockade of KCNQ (Kv7) channels with XE991 rapidly (within 20 min) and profoundly alters inner ear gravity receptor responses to head motion (Lee et al., 2017). We hypothesized that these effects were attributable to the suppression of K+ secretion following blockade of KCNQ1-KCNE1 channels in vestibular dark cells and marginal cells. To test this hypothesis, K+ secretion was independently inhibited by blocking the Na+-K+-2Cl- cotransporter (NKCC1, Slc12a2) rather than KCNQ1-KCNE1 channels. Acute blockade of NKCC1 with ethacrynic acid (40 mg/kg) eliminated auditory res
