Cataracts after Ophthalmic and Nonophthalmic Trauma Exposure in Service Members, U.S. Armed Forces.

ABSTRACT: IntroductionWe aimed to identify injury-related risk factors for secondary cataract incidence after eye and brain injury and polytrauma. We also examined the effect of direct and indirect eye injury management on cataract diagnosis and treatment. Prevention or mitigation strategies require knowledge of the causes and types of combat injuries, which will enable more appropriate targeting of resources toward prevention and more efficient management of such injuries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were gathered from the Military Health System using the Military Health System Management an

Current review of glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists and risk of nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy.

Emerging data has identified a potential association between glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) and nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), a typically sudden, painless, and irreversible cause of optic nerve-mediated vision loss. This review synthesizes the current clinical, epidemiologic, and potential mechanism linking GLP-1RA-based therapies to NAION risk, informing balanced risk assessment and interdisciplinary clinical decision-making. A structured PubMed search was performed using terms including "GLP-1 receptor agonist," "semaglutide," "liraglutide," "

The evolving role of artificial intelligence in optimizing treatment and patient selection in diabetic macular edema.

Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy is the mainstay of management for diabetic macular edema (DME), but marked variability in response, high injection frequency, and cumulative treatment burden highlight the need for tools that can individualize treatment beyond protocol-driven regimens. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers a pathway toward more individualized risk stratification and prognostic support primarily by capturing statistical associations rather than biological mechanisms. Deep learning systems have achieved great accuracy in detecting diabetic retinopathy (DR

Motility-based viability assay for screening acid-tolerant microalgae.

Motility of self-propelled microorganisms is a clear indicator of survival under acidic stress, enabling identification of acid-tolerant strains. Microalgae hold promise for carbon capture and storage (CCS) owing to their photosynthetic ability to convert carbon dioxide into biomass. However, in sequential chemical-biological CCS, chemical absorption occurs before microalgal inoculation; consequently, the resulting CO2-rich, low-pH solution can markedly reduce cell survival during biological conversion, indicating the need for acid-tolerant strains to improve process efficiency. Here, this stu

Multi-trait Polygenic Probability Risk Score Enhances Glaucoma Prediction Across Ancestries.

Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) remains the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, with early detection crucial for preventing vision loss. However, current risk assessment methods have limited predictive power. Here, we present a multi-trait polygenic probability risk score (PPRS) approach that integrates multiple glaucoma-related traits and leverages functional genomic annotations to enhance POAG prediction across diverse ancestries. We constructed PRSs for POAG, intraocular pressure (IOP), vertical cup-to-disc ratio (VCDR), and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness using
