OBJECTIVE: To investigate long-term compensation mechanisms of utricular function after translabyrinthine surgery for vestibular schwannoma. Correlations between the subjective visual horizontal (SVH) and subjective visual vertical (SVV) and other parameters of vestibular compensation were studied. The correlation between the SVH and SVV was also investigated to see whether these measurements are compatible for patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty consecutive patients were investigated 3 months before and 6 months after surgery by means of electronystagmography and SVH and SVV tests. Tumor s

Human and non-human primates produce rhythmical sounds as soon as they are born. These early vocalizations are important for soliciting the attention of caregivers. How they develop remains a mystery. The orofacial movements necessary for producing these vocalizations have distinct spatiotemporal signatures. Therefore, their development could potentially be tracked over the course of prenatal life. We densely and longitudinally sampled fetal head and orofacial movements in marmoset monkeys using ultrasound imaging. We show that orofacial movements necessary for producing rhythmical vocalizatio

This experiment tested the effect of the sympathetic and thermogenic activation induced by orexin A on eating behavior. The food intake, firing rate (FR) of the sympathetic nerves to interscapular brown adipose tissue (IBAT), IBAT and abdominal temperatures (T(IBAT) and T(ab)), and heart rate (HR) were monitored in 24 h-fasting male Sprague-Dawley rats for 15 h after food presentation. Orexin A (1.5 nmol) was injected into the lateral cerebral ventricle 6 h before food presentation while FR, T(IBAT) and T(ab), and HR were also monitored. The same variables were controlled in rats receiving ore

Oromandibular dystonia is a neuromuscular disorder characterized by tonic or clonic involuntary spasms of the masticatory and lingual muscles. We treated 50 patients with this movement disorder by injection of lidocaine and alcohol into the masticatory or tongue muscles to block muscle afferents from muscle spindle. The patients were divided according to clinical features into four groups: jaw-closing, jaw-opening, jaw-deviation, and tongue dystonias. Objective evaluation of the symptoms before and after therapy was based on a clinical scaling protocol in terms of four parameters (mastication,

Postlesional reorganization of vestibular afferent and commissural inputs onto second-order vestibular neurons was studied in the isolated brain after unilateral section of the N.VIII, of the ramus anterior (RA) of N.VIII, of the utricular (UT) or of the anterior vertical and horizontal canal nerves in combination. RA nerve section eliminated the inputs from utricular, anterior vertical and horizontal canal organs. In the first set of experiments we recorded field potentials on the operated side of the vestibular nuclei 2 months after RA nerve section. These responses were evoked by electrical

Recent research indicates that areas of the primary somatosensory (SI) and primary motor cortex show massive cortical reorganization after amputation of the upper arm, forearm or fingers. Most of these studies were carried out months or several years after amputation. In the present study, we describe cortical reorganization of areas in the SI of a patient who underwent amputation of the traumatized middle and ring fingers of his right hand 10 days before cortical magnetic source imaging data were obtained. Somatosensory-evoked magnetic fields (SEF) to mechanical stimuli to the finger tips wer

The convergence pattern of cardiac receptors, pulmonary C-fibers, carotid chemoreceptor, and baroreceptor afferents onto neurons within the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) was studied in the anesthetized (pentobarbitone sodium, 40 mg/kg,) paralyzed and artificially ventilated cat. Extra- and intracellular recordings were made from NTS neurons while stimulating both cardiac receptors by aortic root injections of veratridine (1-3 micrograms/kg) and pulmonary C-fibers by a right atrial injection of phenylbiguanide (10-20 micrograms/kg). The ipsilateral carotid body was stimulated by using art

A 47-year-old woman developed acute Guillain-Barré-syndrome (GBS) within one day, presenting tetraparesis (muscle strength 1/5 for the upper and 2/5 for the lower extremities) and respiratory failure. On day 5 a cardiac pacemaker was necessary due to severe bradycardia. Electrophysiological studies were performed on days 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 12, 15, 30 and 40. Our initial findings revealed normal motor conduction velocities and normal spinal motor evoked potentials. However, neither F-waves nor cortical motor evoked potentials could be registered from the upper or lower extremities. The motor conduc

Recent studies suggest that calcium contributes to peripheral neural mechanisms of hyperalgesia associated with nerve damage. In this animal behavioural study, we examined further the contribution of calcium in neuropathic pain by testing whether subcutaneous administration of either a calcium chelating agent or voltage-dependent calcium channel blockers attenuate nerve injury-induced hyperalgesia to mechanical stimulation. Studies were carried out in animals with partially ligated sciatic nerves, an established animal model of neuropathic pain. The nociceptive flexion reflex was quantified us

The distribution of nitric oxide synthase immunoreactivity (NOS-IR) and the changes in this distribution after peripheral axotomy were examined in lumbosacral afferent and preganglionic neurons (PGNs) innervating the pelvic viscera of the male rat. The visceral neurons in L6-S1 and L1-L2 dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and in the spinal cord were identified by retrograde axonal transport following injection of Fluorogold (FG) into the major pelvic ganglion (MPG). Axotomy was performed by removing the MPG on one side 2-4 weeks prior to sacrificing the animals. A differential distribution of NOS-IR wa

In the CNS the cell adhesion molecule L1 plays a role in axonal growth and fasciculation. Since its roles in synapse formation and CNS regeneration are unknown, we followed the staining of L1 through the sequence of degeneration and reactive axon sprouting in the denervated outer molecular layer (ML) of the hippocampal dentate gyrus following ipsilateral entorhinal cortex (ERC) lesion. We compared immunohistological and ultrastructural localization of L1 and employed image analysis to evaluate lamina-specific changes over time. L1 staining was uniformly distributed over the ML in unlesioned an

Median nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) and jerk-locked EEG back-averaging (JLA) were performed in 2 patients with left-hand myoclonus. Both SEPs were characterized by a normal parietal N20 and an enhanced N27-P27 fronto-parietal complex, but the giant central N40 described by most authors was only observed in case 1. Similarily, the aspect of JLA clearly differed in both patients. We hypothetize that both patients exhibited signs of an increased drive of the motor cortex by inputs coming from the sensory cortex. This increased drive could be mediated by the cortico-cortical connex

The differential nature of the modulation of excitatory inputs from various cardiovascular receptor groups by pulmonary stretch afferents, driven by lung inflation, and the central inspiratory neuronal activity, has been demonstrated. At levels of activity of pulmonary stretch afferents and of central inspiratory drive that almost completely suppress the bradycardia of stimulation of the carotid bodies, the response to stimulation of the arterial baroreceptors and cardiac C fibre endings was reduced by 30-58%. In contrast, the bradycardia evoked by pulmonary C fibre stimulation was not signifi

This work set out to test the hypothesis that thalamotomy in the area of the thalamus which receives the input from the medial segment of the globus pallidus would decrease or prevent levodopa-induced dyskinesia. Peak dose dyskinesia is a major problem in the treatment of parkinsonian patients with levodopa therapy but this remains the best pharmacological agent for treating the condition. The hypothesis was derived from previous work which has suggested that reduced pallidal inhibition of the thalamus results in dyskinesia [Crossman (1990) Movement Dis. 5, 100-108]. A neuroanatomical tracing

1. We tested the hypothesis that long-term synaptic potentiation (LTP)-associated excitatory postsynaptic potential (EPSP)/spike dissociation in the dentate gyrus (DG) is determined, in part, by changes in the feed-forward inhibition evoked by perforant path (PP) stimulation. The dentate commissural pathway (CP) and the PP activate a common pool of interneurons. Therefore a change in synaptic efficacy in the inhibitory circuit due to activation of one pathway could lead to changes in inhibitory efficacy in the other. The relationship between changes in feed-forward inhibition in the CP and EPS

Mechanical stimulation with a reflex hammer was applied to the quadriceps muscle tendon of healthy volunteers and patients. The time-locked electrical signals were recorded from the scalp. In all cases, reproducible potentials could be recorded, with latencies in a range of 20 ms to 100 ms. The potentials recorded in patients under complete spinal anesthesia were similar to those derived before the anesthesia. In brain dead patients who showed absence of median nerve or posterior tibial nerve SEP, reproducible potentials after mechanical stimuli could be recorded as well. The results suggest t

The central terminals of primary afferent neurons are topographically highly ordered in the spinal cord. Peripheral receptor sensitivity is reflected by dorsal horn laminar location: low-threshold mechanoreceptors terminate in laminae III and IV (refs 2, 3) and high-threshold nociceptors in laminae I, II and V (refs 4,5). Unmyelinated C fibres, most of which are nociceptors, terminate predominantly in lamina II (refs 5, 7). There is therefore an anatomical framework for the transfer of specific inputs to localized subsets of dorsal horn neurons. This specificity must contribute to the relation

Deafferenting injuries often cause transient or permanent physiological alterations within the central projection field of affected primary afferent fibers. Aberrant sensory perceptions, dysesthesias, and hyperalgesias represent the clinical sequelae of such injuries; however, the results of experimental deafferentations have been subject to a variety of interpretations (Rodin and Kruger, 1984b). Neurochemical studies show an increased sensitivity of partially deafferented neurons to substance P (SP). Our previous studies (Hoffmann et al., 1991) documented, primarily at the light-microscopic l

Modulation of the spinal nociceptive tail flick (TF) reflex by electrical stimulation of subdiaphragmatic or cervical vagal afferent fibers was characterized in rats lightly anesthetized with pentobarbital. Cervical vagal afferent stimulation (VAS) inhibited the TF reflex in a pulse width-, frequency-, and intensity-dependent fashion. The optimum parameters for inhibition of the TF reflex were determined to be 2.0 ms pulse width, 20 Hz frequency with a threshold (T) current of 60 microA. Cervical VAS at 0.2-0.6 T facilitated the TF reflex. Cervical VAS at T typically produced a depressor arter

The evidence for an involvement of QUIN in human seizure disorders is clearly circumstantial. Importantly, QUIN is not a classical neurotransmitter and may thus play only a negligible or no role at all in normal brain function (Foster et al., 1984). We have yet to understand if and how such a possibly inert metabolite may turn into a pathogen. Several crucial questions remain to be addressed before a case can be made for a 'quinolinic acid hypothesis' of temporal lobe epilepsy. Among the most prominent ones figure the extracellular concentration of QUIN in the human brain under normal and path
