Phase-field simulation of crack growth in cortical bone microstructure: parameter identification and comparison against experiments.

Computational models are commonly used to investigate how the cortical bone microstructure affects fracture resistance; recently, phase-field models have been introduced for this purpose. However, experimentally measured material parameters for the microstructural tissues are lacking. Moreover, as no validation studies have been published, it remains unclear to what extent classical phase-field methods, assuming linear-elastic, brittle fracture, accurately represent bone. In this study, we address both these shortcomings by first applying a design-of-experiments methodology to calibrate a set

A multiaxial bioreactor system that applies targeted magnitudes of strain energy to 3D cellular constructs.

Cyclic mechanical stimulation is instrumental in the remodeling and engineering of musculoskeletal tissue, yet the physical mechanisms that regulate this mechanobiological response are poorly understood. A plausible explanation is that extracellular matrix remodeling is governed by the strain energy that develops during tissue distortion and dilation. A major barrier to testing strain energy-based theories is the absence of in vitro experimental methods that can prescribe targeted amounts of strain energy to 3D cellular constructs under different physiological loads for given thermodynamic con

A specific model of resting-state functional brain network in MRI-negative temporal lobe epilepsy.

PURPOSE: Without any visible indicator on structure magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the diagnosis of MRI-negative temporal lobe epilepsy (NTLE) gets harder. By considering healthy control (HC), a specific functional connectivity (FC) model was constructed in a network topology to improve FC computation to a high-level. METHODS: MRI data of 20 NTLE patients and 60 HC were pre-processed. Relative to HC, a network-level specific FC model of each network index was built to score the network functions for each NTLE patient. The specific brain areas (regarded as ROIs) were extracted for NTLE by s

scRNA-seq Can Identify Different Cell Populations in Ovarian Cancer Bulk RNA-seq Experiments.

High-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC) is a heterogeneous disease. RNA sequencing (RNAseq) of bulk solid tissue is of limited use in these populations due to heterogeneity. Single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq) allows for the identification of diverse genetic compositions of heterogeneous cell populations. New computational methodologies are now available that use scRNAseq results to estimate cell type proportions in bulk RNAseq data. We performed bulk RNA-seq gene expression analysis on 112 HGSC specimens and 12 benign fallopian tube (FT) controls. We identified several publicly available scRNAseq
