Neural correlates of covert face processing: fMRI evidence from a prosopagnosic patient.

Brains can perceive or recognize a face even though we are subjectively unaware of the existence of that face. However, the exact neural correlates of such covert face processing remain unknown. Here, we compared the fMRI activities between a prosopagnosic patient and normal controls when they saw famous and unfamiliar faces. When compared with objects, the patient showed greater activation to famous faces in the fusiform face area (FFA) though he could not overtly recognize those faces. In contrast, the controls showed greater activation to both famous and unfamiliar faces in the FFA. Compare

The language profile of posterior cortical atrophy.

BACKGROUND: Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is typically considered to be a visual syndrome, primarily characterised by progressive impairment of visuoperceptual and visuospatial skills. However, patients commonly describe early difficulties with word retrieval. This paper details the first systematic analysis of linguistic function in PCA. Characterising and quantifying the aphasia associated with PCA is important for clarifying diagnostic and selection criteria for clinical and research studies. METHODS: 15 patients with PCA, seven patients with logopenic/phonological aphasia (LPA) and 18

A hemodynamic correlate of lateralized visual short-term memories.

Neuroimaging studies attempting to isolate the neural substrate of visual short-term memory in humans have concentrated on the behavior of neurons populating the posterior part of the parietal cortex as a possible source of visual short-term memory capacity limits. Using a standard change-detection task, fMRI studies have shown that maintenance of bilaterally encoded objects elicited bilateral increases of hemodynamic activation in the intra-parietal and intra-occipital sulci (IPS-IOS) proportional to the number of objects retained in visual short-term memory. We used a spatially cued variant

Evaluation of minimum interdental threshold ability in dentate female temporomandibular disorder patients.

Minimum interdental threshold is the smallest thickness that can be detected between teeth during an occlusion and has an influence on the occlusal force and on the control of mandibular movements. The aim of this study was to assess the possible association of the signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) with the ability to detect a minimum interdental threshold. Two hundred women were equally divided into four groups: asymptomatic (control), subjects with masticatory muscle pain, with articular [temporomandibular joint (TMJ)] pain and mixed (muscular and articular pain). Evalu

First genome-wide association scan on neurophysiological endophenotypes points to trans-regulation effects on SLC2A3 in dyslexic children.

Dyslexia is one of the most common learning disorders affecting about 5% of all school-aged children. It has been shown that event-related potential measurements reveal differences between dyslexic children and age-matched controls. This holds particularly true for mismatch negativity (MMN), which reflects automatic speech deviance processing and is altered in dyslexic children. We performed a whole-genome association analysis in 200 dyslexic children, focusing on MMN measurements. We identified rs4234898, a marker located on chromosome 4q32.1, to be significantly associated with the late MMN

Auditory evoked fields predict language ability and impairment in children.

Recent evidence suggests that a subgroup of children with autism show similarities to children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI) in the pattern of their linguistic impairments, but the source of this overlap is unclear. We examined the ability of auditory evoked magnetic fields to predict language and other developmental abilities in children and adolescents. Following standardized assessment of language ability, nonverbal IQ, and autism-associated behaviors, 110 trails of a tone were binaurally presented to 45 7-18 year olds who had typical development, autism (with LI), Asperger Syndro

Impairments in part-whole representations of objects in two cases of integrative visual agnosia.

How complex multipart visual objects are represented perceptually remains a subject of ongoing investigation. One source of evidence that has been used to shed light on this issue comes from the study of individuals who fail to integrate disparate parts of visual objects. This study reports a series of experiments that examine the ability of two such patients with this form of agnosia (integrative agnosia; IA), S.M. and C.R., to discriminate and categorize exemplars of a rich set of novel objects, "Fribbles", whose visual similarity (number of shared parts) and category membership (shared over

Timing of tactile and visuo-tactile events is impaired in patients with cervical dystonia.

Psychophysical studies show alterations of cross-modal integration and timing processes in patients with generalized and focal hand dystonia. Here we assess the capability of 10 cervical dystonia patients, 5 patients with cervical pain but no dystonia, and 10 healthy controls to determine whether pairs of visual, tactile or visuo-tactile stimuli were simultaneous or sequential (TD threshold) and which stimulus preceded the other (temporal order judgement, TOJ). Visual stimuli consisted of light emitting diodes and tactile stimuli of non-noxious electrical shocks delivered to the hands. Interva

Abnormal functional asymmetry in occipital areas may prevent frontotemporal regions from achieving functional laterality during the WCST performance in patients with schizophrenia.

There is much evidence of frontotemporal lateralized abnormalities in schizophrenia. However, the relationship has not yet been examined between performance on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, with supposed anterior left dominance and event-related potential (ERP) asymmetry. ERPs recorded at homologous bilateral sites were compared using statistical permutation methods. Patients had an unexpected abnormal lateralization over occipital regions, preceding slow anterior potentials. This indicates a defect in early stages of information processing, which may contribute to prevent further hemispher

Differentiating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from major depression (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

Questions about the differential diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have been raised since this category was reformulated in DSM-III (APA, 1980). Clinicians have reported difficulties distinguishing PTSD from other categories, particularly from Major Depressive and Generalized Anxiety Disorders (MDD and GAD). Diagnostic validity can be established in several ways (e.g., through clinical descriptive studies, laboratory experiments, family history studies, etc.). In this paper, we describe one approach to validation thus far not applied to PTSD: This approach centers directly on

Deciphering Pain Experience in Adult Patients With Sickle Cell Disease: A Network Analysis of Pain-Related Factors in a Single French Sickle Cell Centre.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most prevalent inherited haemoglobinopathy characterised by chronic pain with acute painful episodes due to vaso-occlusion. The effective management of pain by adults with SCD influences their health outcomes. Opioids remain essential for most pain syndromes, but non-pharmacological interventions are preferred for daily pain due to the risk of addiction. However, their effectiveness is variable. Understanding the underlying processes associated with pain is crucial for developing more effective non-pharmacological strategies. This study aimed to enh

Mapping risk of gambling disorder in older adults: a neural network approach.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Gambling disorder (GD) in older adults remains insufficiently understood, despite growing concerns about gambling-related harm in older adulthood. Risk profiles and clinical presentations in this age group may differ from those typically described in younger or mixed-age samples, reflecting age-specific psychosocial contexts, health conditions, and life transitions. Traditional statistical approaches may be limited in their ability to model the complex, non-linear interplay among psychological, behavioral, and contextual factors. The present study aimed to apply neur
