Is uveitis associated with topiramate use? A cumulative review.

Occasional reports of uveitis following topiramate use necessitated an investigation of relevant cases from safety databases and published biomedical literature. Data mining of the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System and cumulative review of cases from the global safety database (sponsor database) and published literature were conducted to assess association between topiramate use and uveitis. The Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System search identified disproportional reporting of uveitis (n=23) and related terms (choroidal detachment, n=25; iridoc

Glaucoma With Crouzon Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Crouzon syndrome is the most common form of craniosynostosis, and mutations in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 and 3 (FGFR2 and FGFR3) genes are implicated in its pathogenesis. OBSERVATION: A 10-year-old female patient with Crouzon syndrome and congenital glaucoma treated with trabeculectomy and ocular hypotensive medications was examined. The patient had proptosis, exposure keratopathy, megalocornea, thin central corneal thickness, a shallow anterior chamber, mild anterior subcapsular cataract, and a cup-to-disc ratio of 0.9. Ultrasound biomicroscopy revealed a shallow an

Are phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors associated with vision-threatening adverse events? A critical analysis and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors are the first line drugs for treatment of erectile dysfunction. Sildenafil (Viagra(R)), tadalafil (Cialis(R)), and vardenafil (Levitra(R)) are from the same class of drugs that inhibit PDE5. Transient visual symptoms such as change in color perception and increased light sensitivity are well-known adverse effects of these drugs and occur in 3-11% of sildenafil users. Vision-threatening (serious) ocular complications, such as nonarteritic ischemic optic neuropathy and cilio-retinal artery occlusion have rarely been reported in PDE5 inhibi

Heart rhythm irregularities during laparoscopy: Description of a novel technique to manage severe intra-operative bradycardia - A case report.

INTRODUCTION & IMPORTANCE: Minimally invasive abdominal surgeries need insufflation of a gas (usually carbon dioxide) into the peritoneal cavity for creating a pneumoperitoneum. Laparoscopic techniques have its own set of inherent complications. In order to maintain the operative space, constant gas flow is required to assist various surgeries. Increase in intraabdominal pressure due to high flow rate of gas during peritoneal insufflation is considered to be a probable cause of intraoperative vagal-mediated bradycardia resulting due to stretching of peritoneum. Intraoperative bradycardia durin

An Efficient Approach to Predict Eye Diseases from Symptoms Using Machine Learning and Ranker-Based Feature Selection Methods.

The eye is generally considered to be the most important sensory organ of humans. Diseases and other degenerative conditions of the eye are therefore of great concern as they affect the function of this vital organ. With proper early diagnosis by experts and with optimal use of medicines and surgical techniques, these diseases or conditions can in many cases be either cured or greatly mitigated. Experts that perform the diagnosis are in high demand and their services are expensive, hence the appropriate identification of the cause of vision problems is either postponed or not done at all such

Ocular Features of Cerebro-Costo-Mandibular Syndrome.

Cerebro-costo-mandibular syndrome (CCMS) is a rare hereditary disorder characterized by micrognathia, posterior rib gaps, and secondary developmental delay. Patients often require ventilation and feeding support throughout life. We describe the first reported ophthalmic findings of CCMS and propose that defects in choroidal permeability lead to chronic macular edema and refractory aqueous misdirection syndrome. Here we discuss the medical and surgical management concerns of recurrent angle closure and raised intraocular pressure in a CCMS patient.

Keratoconus Following Cataract Extraction: A Patient-Centered Perspective.

Keratoconus is one of the most common forms of corneal ectasia. In severe cases, patients experience significant visual impairment, which can be further exacerbated by the development of cataracts. This deterioration may not only impact their vision but also affect their emotional well-being and mental health. Here, we report a case of a patient with severe keratoconus who underwent cataract surgery in both eyes, leading to a remarkable transformation in her life. An 80-year-old woman with underlying hypertension initially presented with bilateral blurring of vision and elevated intraocular pr
