Real-World Safety and Effectiveness of Cabotegravir in People Living with HIV: Interim Report of a Post-marketing Surveillance in Japan.

INTRODUCTION: Cabotegravir (CAB) is an integrase strand transfer inhibitor and the first long-acting injectable antiretroviral agent for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), administered with rilpivirine. Because approval in Japan relied largely on overseas and international collaborative trials, domestic real-world evidence remains limited. This study evaluated the real-world safety and effectiveness of CAB in people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Japan. METHODS: This interim analysis (June 27, 2022 and June 17, 2025) was part of an ongoing post-marketing surveillance of Japanese PLHIV treated wi

Proctitis and Other Gastrointestinal Manifestations in Mpox Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mpox, caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV), is primarily recognized for its dermatologic and systemic symptoms. However, emerging evidence suggests a significant prevalence of gastrointestinal (GI) manifestations, particularly proctitis, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Despite the growing clinical recognition of these symptoms, their epidemiology and impact remain poorly understood. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to quantify the prevalence of GI manifestations in Mpox patients and assess their clinical significance. METHODS: A systematic review follow…

Knowledge, Attitude, and Behavior of the Pakistani Population Toward the Monkeypox Pandemic and the Associated Factors.

Background Monkeypox (Mpox) is a virulent disease caused by orthopoxvirus. Mpox is emerging as a major global health threat. Currently, more than 100 countries are facing outbreaks. Pakistan, too, is witnessing the spread of this virus, with 11 confirmed cases and one death since its first detection in April 2023. Mpox infection can be diagnosed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and treated with antiviral agents. The smallpox vaccine is also proven to be effective against Mpox. Methodology This cross-sectional survey aimed to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and behaviors (KAB) of the Pak

[Orf Infection Localized in the Earlobe: The First Case Report in the Literature].

Orf is a zoonotic infection caused by the parapoxvirus belonging to the Poxviridae family. It is usually transmitted to humans from sheep and goats. Human-to-human transmission is quite rare. Shepherds, veterinarians, slaughterhouse workers and people living in rural areas who are in close contact with farm animals constitute the main risk group. It most commonly presents as pustular dermatitis on the hands, usually painless but sometimes associated with tenderness and pain in the early clinical stages. Auricular localization is quite rare, with a few cases involving the ear reported in the li

Public health implications of emerging zoonoses.

Many new, emerging and re-emerging diseases of humans are caused by pathogens which originate from animals or products of animal origin. A wide variety of animal species, both domestic and wild, act as reservoirs for these pathogens, which may be viruses, bacteria or parasites. Given the extensive distribution of the animal species affected, the effective surveillance, prevention and control of zoonotic diseases pose a significant challenge. The authors describe the direct and indirect implications for public health of emerging zoonoses. Direct implications are defined as the consequences for

When it rains, it pours: Early treatment with tecovirimat of cardiac complications associated with monkeypox infection in a person with HIV and previously undiagnosed Lyme disease. A case report.

Cardiac involvement, such as myocarditis and pericarditis, can be a severe complication of monkeypox virus (mpox) infection and could be related to other co-infections with cardiac involvement. Tecovirimat is an antiviral specifically designed to inhibit smallpox infection diffusion and approved by the FDA for other Orthopoxvirus infections; its efficacy in mpox-infected patients is not well established. We present the case of a cardiac complication during mpox infection in a previously undiagnosed Lyme disease in a 42-year-old man living with HIV. Two days after the typical maculopapular rash…

Estimating the prevalence of Monkeypox among men who have sex with men in a major city in Southwest China, since 2023 via capture-recapture methods.

BACKGROUND: Monkeypox (mpox) is a zoonotic disease caused by the mpox virus, which was previously observed primarily in west-central Africa. Since May 2022, mpox outbreaks have emerged in several nonendemic countries around the world and have continued to spread, mainly through close contact (including sexual contact) in the population of men who have sex with men (MSM). Since June 2, 2023, when the first indigenous case of mpox in mainland China was reported in Beijing, the mpox epidemic in China has lasted for more than a year and still shows ongoing transmission, with the total number of re

Human poxvirus disease after smallpox eradication.

A 5-year-old boy living in a small camp in the rural Ivory Coast had a disease resembling smallpox. This occurred 4 years after smallpox had been eradicated from the Ivory Coast and 1.5 years after the last case of smallpox was detected in West and Central Africa. Clinical, serological, and epidemiological evidence indicated this disease was probably monkeypox, a poxvirus of the variola/vaccina subgroup. A serologic survey of poxvirus antibodies in the wild animal population detected neutralizing antibodies in rodents, larger mammals, primates, and birds. The laboratory and ecological characte

Following the COVID-19 playbook and battling another infodemic: conspiracy beliefs around human monkeypox among the Lebanese population.

INTRODUCTION: The non-endemic multicountry outbreak of monkeypox (MPX) has emphasized the issue of conspiracy theories that go viral in times of societal crisis. Now, it is the turn of MPX to join COVID-19 in the conspiracy theory realm. Social media outlets were flooded by a scourge of misinformation as soon as MPX cases began to appear with an evident cross-pollination between diverse conspiracy theories. Given the adverse consequences of conspiracy beliefs, this study aimed to assess the extent of endorsement of MPX conspiracy beliefs among the Lebanese population and to identify its associ

Epidemiological profile and transmission of mpox in the Kamituga health zone of South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo: a cross-sectional prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Monkeypox (mpox) remains a major global public health problem due to its rapid transmission, clinical severity and high case-fatality rate, especially for the clade I virus. Since August 2024, the disease was declared an public health emergency of international concern, with the resurgence of the disease cases and morbidity and mortality. Few studies exist in low-income countries. The Kamituga health zone (HZ) in South Kivu is the epicenter of the epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The aim of this study is to describe the transmission dynamics, epidemiological and

Safety, immunogenicity, efficacy, and effectiveness of mpox vaccines in pregnant persons, children, and adolescents: a protocol for a living systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mpox is a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV) that became a global health concern following the 2022 outbreak. It poses a significant threat to immunocompromised individuals, children, and pregnant persons. Disease spread in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and propagation to other countries has led to recent declarations of public health emergencies. Smallpox vaccination cessation has further heightened population vulnerability to MPXV. In response, MVA-BN and LC16m8, vaccinia-based vaccines originally developed for smallpox, have been repurposed for mp…

Cases of Monkeypox show highly-overlapping co-infection with HIV and syphilis.

PURPOSE: Ongoing Monkeypox (MPX) outbreaks in countries outside Africa have unique characteristics. However, data on cohorts of confirmed cases in China is limited. The study provides important epidemiological, diagnostic, and clinical information about this disease in China. METHODS: We report a series of Chinese individuals with confirmed MPX infections identified at Beijing Youan Hospital (China) from June 10 to July 15, 2023. Samples were taken from the skin, anus, throat, and blood. An epidemiological questionnaire was used to collect demographic and clinical data. Further, we compared t
