We examined associations between basal respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) in conjunction with RSA regulation with the hypothesis that their interaction would explain unique variability in children's prospective adjustment 2 years later. Hemodynamic responses to ventricular defibrillation were studied in anesthetized dogs. Observations were made on arterial, right atrial and left ventricular end-diastolic pressures, on cardiac output (dye dilution), heart rate, and right atrial electrocardiogram. Ventricular fibrillation was induced electrically with a bipolar electrode catheter placed in the right ventricle. Fibrillation was maintained for 15 or 30 sec and terminated with a 400 w sec capacitor discharge across the thoracic cage. Responses lasted 1-10 min after conversion and included a cholinergic and an adrenergic component.

Dravet syndrome (DS) is a severe childhood-onset epilepsy commonly due to mutations of the sodium channel gene SCN1A. Patients with DS have a high risk of sudden unexplained death in epilepsy (SUDEP), widely believed to be due to cardiac mechanisms. Narcolepsy is widely believed to have an autoimmune basis, but conventional immunological approaches have failed to detect a serum autoantibody marker. Since cholinergic hyperactivity is a feature of narcolepsy-cataplexy, we transferred IgG from nine patients with narcolepsy and nine healthy controls to mice and assessed the effect on smooth muscle contractile responses to cholinergic stimulation. The presence of endomorphin-like immunoreactivity has been reported in the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS). It was hypothesized that endomorphins may play a role in cardiovascular regulation in the medial subnucleus of the NTS (mNTS). Endomorphin-2 (E-2, 0.1-4 mmol/l) was microinjected (100 nl) into the mNTS of urethane-anesthetized, artificially ventilated, adult male Wistar rats. E-2 (0.2 mmol/l) elicited decreases in mean arterial pressure (40 +/- 3.5 mmHg) and heart rate (50 +/- 7.0 beats/min). These responses were blocked by prior microinjections of naloxonazine (1 mmol/l) into the mNTS.
