INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in patients with acute hip fracture was examined in a population on Sado Island in Japan. There were 85 cases of hip fracture among this population in 2004, giving an overall incidence of hip fracture of 121.4 per 100,000 population per year. AIM: Treatment of maxillofacial firearm injuries is still controversial with regard to timing of management. We postulate that not all maxillofacial firearm injuries need be delayed and that many may be treated early. To this end, a 19-year retrospective study was undertaken seeking to evaluate patients treated for firearm injuries to the facial skeleton at our center. INTRODUCTION: Tertiary surveys aim to detect injuries missed in the initial assessment of trauma. We introduced a process by which the trauma nurse specialist performed a number of the tertiary surveys (NTSs) at our paediatric trauma centre.

PURPOSE: Oral piercings have a long history as part of religious, cultural, or sexual symbolism in many traditional tribes; currently, these ornaments have wide acceptance among young people. The annual incidence rate of facial injuries from vehicle crashes, 278 per 100,000 residents, was determined from a population-based study involving all Dane County, Wisconsin, hospitals with emergency departments.
