Classification of enlarged prostatic utricle in patients with hypospadias.

An enlarged prostatic utricle is often associated with hypospadias. To evaluate the relationship between the incidence of prostatic utricle and the degree of hypospadias, we performed retrograde urethrography and/or micturating cystourethrography on 280 patients with hypospadias. Prostatic utricles were demonstrated in 84 patients (27.5%) and the incidence increased according to the severity of hypospadias. The prostatic utricles were classified into four types from the standpoint of size and location of the opening of the utricle, and a direct relationship was demonstrated between the severit

Classification and management of burned thumb contractures in children.

Based on the position of the thumb metacarpal, 102 burned thumb contractures in children were classified into four categories: adduction, opposition, extension and flexion. The contractures were further classified as mild, moderate or severe, based on the amount of motion lost. All thumbs were surgically released. Coverage was obtained with local flaps or Z-plasties, skin grafts or a combination of local flaps and skin grafts. Factors influencing the results were as follows: Classification category: Extension contractures generally did poorly, whereas flexion contractures did well. Severity of…

Classification of urticaria and the reactive inflammatory vascular dermatoses.

The common feature of all the conditions discussed in this article is that they are inflammatory vascular dermatoses that may occur as reactive processes in association with other diseases. The histopathologic characteristics of the lesions range from mild, perivascular dermal infiltration with inflammatory cells and vasodilation to various degrees of vessel damage (endothelial swelling to fibrinoid necrosis). The vessel damage is reflected in varying degrees of secondary changes including extravasation of edema fluid, extravasation of erythrocytes, epidermal necrosis, separation of the dermal

[Histogenesis and classification of primary liver tumors in children].

Combined morphological examinations of 55 primary tumors of the liver in children as well as livers of 7 human embryos and fetuses were carr … ithelial-like cells of biliary epithelium in the period of synthesis of basal membrane substance. A classification of primary liver tumors in children taking into account the level of tumor anlage in the ontogenesis and based on the histogenetic principle is proposed.

Halitosis: an etiologic classification, a treatment approach, and prevention.

Halitosis, a condition that causes a severe social handicap to those who suffer from it, has a multifactorial etiology. Since patients with this condition seek professional consultation from dentists much more frequently than from physicians, dentists, who treat diseases of the oral cavity, should have an understanding of the local as well as the systemic factors which cause halitosis. This article presents an extensive review of the information available, with an etiologic classification of this condition to help clinicians develop the diagnostic acumen to distinguish one type of halitosis fr…

Injuries to the tarsometatarsal joint. Incidence, classification and treatment.

Injuries to the tarsometatarsal (Lisfranc) joint are not common, and the results of treatment are often unsatisfactory. Since no individual … of injury rather than the nature of the deforming force and that their treatment be based upon this classification. It seems that, whatever the severity of the initial injury, prognosis depends on accurate reduction and its maintenance.

Classification and approach to patients with functional voice disorders.

Functional voice disorders result from vocal misuse or abuse; they are more easily recognized than other psychosomatic disorders because the … ed as resulting from the underlying and preceding functional disorder. In this report, we present a classification of and an approach to the diagnosis and treatment of functional voice disorders. On the basis of our clinical experience with 52 patients, we distinguished five types of functional voice disorders: type 1, hysterical aphonia/dysphonia; type 2, habit …

Clinical causes and classification of perinatal mortality in Lagos.

Perinatal deaths in singleton births at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital during a 5-year period were reviewed. Causes of deaths were classified into eight groups using a modified form of the Aberdeen classification. Perinatal mortality was high (42.5/1000 total births). The stillbirth rate was 32.5/1000 total births. The major causes of perinatal mortality were trauma (30.5%), low birth weight (23.9%), hemorrhage (13.7%), toxemia of pregnancy (10.3%) and mature, cause unknown (10%). Congenital malformation (4.3%) was not a major cause of perinatal deaths in this study.

The classification and early diagnosis of knee joint instability.

A working classification of knee joint instability includes anatomic and pathologic classifications. The anatomic classification defines the direction of the instability causing the abnormal function to the patient. A structural classification delineates the pathologic lesion. An ability to correlate one with the other ensures proper understanding of the subject. An accurate diagnosis following the acute injury is the basis of effective treatment. Residual chronic disability in many instances will be avoided. Injuries involving the cruciate ligaments constitute difficult diagnostic problems. A…

Classification of cells in vaginal smears with television microscopy.

Properties of 924 cells were measured using a television microscope. A program was written using measured properties discriminating between normal and malignant cells. An investigation of the number of free-lying whole cells and free-lying nuclei on a malignant smear is presented. It is shown that it is possible to get a rather accurate discrimination for single cells using television microscopy with only 10 grey-levels and measuring only density of nucleus, cytoplasm and size of nucleus. However, if classification of single cells should be applied to classify an entire smear, the accuracy in …

Congenital malformations in the frontonasal area: their pathogenesis and classification.

The observation of 235 patients affected by abnormalities in the frontonasal area, has led the author to reinvestigate this complex chapter of the human congenital malformations. A complete critical review of the literature has been made in order to find the possible correlations between the available cases and those previously reported and to establish a simple morphogenetic classification that may embody them all, even transitional forms.

Cytological and functional criteria for the classification of malignant lymphomata.

The subtle morphology and functional properties of cells are the best parameters to use for their definition. This is also true for the corr … mphocytes and their derivatives. By combining all of these methods it was possible to propose a new classification. Whereas not one histiocytic malignant lymphoma ("reticulosarcoma") was found in the series, at least most of the malignant lymphomata investigated seemed to be derived from the B lymphocyte system. The following types are distinguished: (1) Chronic …

The histological classification of duodenitis in fibreoptic biopsy specimens.

Recent advances in biopsy techniques using fibreoptic instruments have refocussed attention on the condition on non-specific duodenitis. Investigation of the topography of duodenitis and its relationship to possible aetiological factors and to duodenal ulcer calls for a proper histological classification. Such a classification is proposed based on the subjective appearances and a quantitative examination of 747 fibreoptic biopsy specimens in a wide range of clinical conditions.

A functional classification of hypochondriasis with specific recommendations for treatment.

A review of both past and present psychiatric literature reveals that the concept of hypochondriasis is inexact and confusing. In an attempt to make hypochondriasis a meaningful and useful concept for practicing clinicans, a functional classification is presented that views hypochondriasis from four aspects--(1) as a "warning signal," (2) as a symptom of psychosis, (3) as a symptom of depressive illness, and (4) as a syndrome labelled "true hypochondriasis." Each of these aspects is discussed, with emphasis placed on specific and practical recommendations for treatment.
