Collaborating With Schools for Public Health Research in England: Lessons Learned for Successful Partnerships.

Carrying out health research with schools can be both challenging and highly rewarding. Here we describe lessons learned from a research partnership lasting over 5 years, initially with 84 primary schools in London and Luton, and extended to 35 secondary schools, during our children health cohort study. This period included school closures and societal disruption during the COVID-19 pandemic, creating additional challenges to ongoing school participation. Our study involved annual health assessment visits to schools to test over 3000 participants and parental self-report questionnaires, to ass

From Avoidance to Engagement: Trans Masculine and Nonbinary Strategies to Cope with Gender Dysphoria During Sex.

OBJECTIVES: The current study takes a resilience-based approach to the sexual well-being of transmasculine and nonbinary individuals through asking them directly what coping strategies they utilize to manage gender dysphoria during sexual activities. METHODS: Participants (N = 360) included trans masculine (n = 177, 49.2%), nonbinary (n = 148, 41.1%), and agender (n = 35, 9.7%), individuals who were assigned female at birth. An online study was completed by participants and thematic analysis was conducted to understand participants' descriptions of their strategies for coping with gender dysp

Protocol for visual-acoustic intervention with service delivery in-person and via telepractice (VISIT) non-inferiority trial for residual speech sound disorder.

BACKGROUND: Residual speech sound disorder (RSSD) is a high-prevalence condition that negatively impacts social and academic participation. Telepractice service delivery has the potential to expand access to technology-enhanced intervention methods that can help remediate RSSD, but it is not known whether remote service delivery is associated with a reduction in the efficacy of these methods. This project will systematically measure the outcomes of visual-acoustic biofeedback intervention when delivered in-person or online. METHODS/DESIGN: This project, Visual-acoustic Intervention with Servi

Age-related differences in associative inference are larger than differences in direct associative memory.

Inferential reasoning is an important cognitive ability that allows us to make connections across past experiences to make decisions in the face of novel information. Making an inference involves the ability to remember separate experiences with overlapping elements (direct memory) and the ability to make connections between those experiences (inference/indirect memory). While older adults are known to have a deficit for direct associative memory, less is known about potential age differences in inference. In the present study, we administered an associative inference task to healthy young (ag

Psychological interventions to improve parental wellbeing after fetal abnormality diagnosis: a systematic scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Antenatal diagnoses of foetal abnormalities are associated with significant psychological distress for parents. This scoping review aims to identify and synthesise the existing literature on antenatally delivered psychological interventions for parents designed to support mental wellbeing following a foetal abnormality diagnosis. METHODS: A prospectively registered protocol guided this scoping review, utilising methodologies outlined by Arksey and O'Malley (2005) and Levac et al. (2010). A systematic search was conducted using five electronic databases (PsycINFO, CINAHL, Medline,

From Acute Infection to Prolonged Health Consequences: Understanding Health Disparities and Economic Implications in Long COVID Worldwide.

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a growing number of patients experiencing persistent symptoms and physiological changes after recovering from acute SARS-CoV-2 infection, known as Long COVID. Long COVID is characterized by recurring symptoms and inflammation across multiple organ systems. Diagnosis can be challenging, influenced by factors like demographics, comorbidities, and immune responses. Long COVID impacts various organ systems and can have neuropsychological effects. Health disparities, particularly related to race, contribute to a higher burden of infection and ongoing symptoms i

Dysconnectivity in Schizophrenia Revisited: Abnormal Temporal Organization of Dynamic Functional Connectivity in Patients With a First Episode of Psychosis.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Abnormal functional connectivity between brain regions is a consistent finding in schizophrenia, including functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies. Recent studies have highlighted that connectivity changes in time in healthy subjects. We here examined the temporal changes in functional connectivity in patients with a first episode of psychosis (FEP). Specifically, we analyzed the temporal order in which whole-brain organization states were visited. STUDY DESIGN: Two case-control studies, including in each sample a subgroup scanned a second time after tr

Brain Dynamics of Action Monitoring in Higher-Order Motor Control Disorders: The Case of Apraxia.

Limb apraxia (LA) refers to a high-order motor disorder characterized by the inability to reproduce transitive actions on commands or after observation. Studies demonstrate that action observation and action execution activate the same networks in the human brain, and provides an onlooker's motor system with appropriate cognitive, motor and sensory-motor cues to flexibly implementing action-sequences and gestures. Tellingly, the temporal dynamics of action monitoring has never been explored in people suffering from LA. To fill this gap, we studied the electro-cortical signatures of error obser

A thematic analysis of patients' and their informal caregivers' gendered experiences in traumatic brain injury.

PURPOSE: Research shows that patients' perceptions of themselves and others, in addition to their understanding of the concept of gender, changes after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Little is known about gendered experiences in TBI and care delivery. This study aims to explore perceptions of gender through life experiences and interactions between adult patients with TBI and their informal caregivers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven patients with mild and moderate-severe TBI and eight informal caregivers were interviewed. Transcripts were coded and analysed according to Braun and Clarke's themat

Impact of a paediatric cardiac rehabilitation programme upon patient quality of life.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac rehabilitation programmes for paediatric patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) have been shown to promote emotional and physical health without any associated adverse events. While prior studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of these types of interventions, there has been limited research into how the inclusion of psychological interventions as part of the programme impacts parent-reported and patient-reported quality of life. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients between the ages of 7 and 24 years with CHD completed a cardiac rehabilitation programme that followe

Altered Reinforcement Learning from Reward and Punishment in Anorexia Nervosa: Evidence from Computational Modeling.

OBJECTIVES: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with altered sensitivity to reward and punishment. Few studies have investigated whether this results in aberrant learning. The ability to learn from rewarding and aversive experiences is essential for flexibly adapting to changing environments, yet individuals with AN tend to demonstrate cognitive inflexibility, difficulty set-shifting and altered decision-making. Deficient reinforcement learning may contribute to repeated engagement in maladaptive behavior. METHODS: This study investigated learning in AN using a probabilistic associative learn

International Consortium on the Genetics of Electroconvulsive Therapy and Severe Depressive Disorders (Gen-ECT-ic).

Recent genome-wide association studies have demonstrated that the genetic burden associated with depression correlates with depression severity. Therefore, conducting genetic studies of patients at the most severe end of the depressive disorder spectrum, those with treatment-resistant depression and who are prescribed electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), could lead to a better understanding of the genetic underpinnings of depression. Despite ECT being one of the most effective forms of treatment for severe depressive disorders, it is usually placed at the end of treatment algorithms of current gui

Understanding Adolescent Low Back Pain From a Multidimensional Perspective: Implications for Management.

Synopsis Low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of disability worldwide. It often begins in adolescence, setting a course for later in life. We have tracked the course of LBP in the Raine Study cohort from the age of 14 years into early adulthood. Our work has found that LBP is already prevalent in individuals at 14 years of age and increases throughout adolescence and into early adulthood. It is often comorbid with other musculoskeletal pain. For some adolescents, LBP has little impact; for others, its impact includes care seeking, taking medication, taking time off from school and work, as

Parietal hyper-connectivity, aberrant brain organization, and circuit-based biomarkers in children with mathematical disabilities.

Mathematical disabilities (MD) have a negative life-long impact on professional success, employment, and health outcomes. Yet little is known about the intrinsic functional brain organization that contributes to poor math skills in affected children. It is now increasingly recognized that math cognition requires coordinated interaction within a large-scale fronto-parietal network anchored in the intraparietal sulcus (IPS). Here we characterize intrinsic functional connectivity within this IPS-network in children with MD, relative to a group of typically developing (TD) children who were matche

Clinical potential of cariprazine in the treatment of acute mania.

Cariprazine (RGH-188, trans-4-{2-[4-(2,3-dichlorophenyl)-piperazine-1-yl]-ethyl}-N,N-dimethylcarbamoyl-cyclohexyl-amine hydrochloride), is a novel antipsychotic with dopamine D2 and D3 receptors antagonist-partial agonist properties. Cariprazine has also moderate affinity for serotonin 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HT) 1A receptors, high affinity for 5-HT1B receptors with pure antagonism and low affinity for 5-HT2A receptors. Randomized, double blind, placebo controlled, flexible-dose (3-12 mg/day) studies have demonstrated cariprazine is effective in both schizophrenia and acute manic episodes assoc
