Sterile keratitis following standard corneal collagen crosslinking: A case series and literature review.

Standard corneal collagen crosslinking (S-CXL) is a safe, approved procedure, but it may result in severe pain, early vision loss and possible complications, such as infectious or sterile keratitis, in some cases. We describe four cases of sterile infiltrates after uneventful S-CXL for keratoconus, from diagnosis to medical management with six months of follow-up, reporting their pathophysiological features, and comparing our findings with published reports. We discuss various possibilities for diagnosing sterile infiltration more rapidly. In terms of the pathophysiology of sterile infiltrate

A hydrogen sulfide-releasing alginate dressing for effective wound healing.

For wounds with heavy exudate levels, a dressing that can help to absorb wound exudate and improve the wound healing process is highly desired. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been recognized as an important gasotransmitter that can improve angiogenesis which is crucial for wound healing. In this study, a functional sodium alginate (SA) dressing with H2S-releasing property (SA/JK-1) was fabricated by incorporating JK-1 molecule, a pH-dependent H2S donor, into SA sponge. The resultant SA/JK-1 sponge provided a moist and protective healing environment and was capable of releasing H2S consistently und

An injectable non-cross-linked hyaluronic-acid gel containing therapeutic spheroids of human adipose-derived stem cells.

For chronic wounds, the delivery of stem cells in spheroidal structures can enhance graft survival and stem cell potency. We describe an easy method for the 3D culture of adipose-derived stem/stromal cells (ASCs) to prepare a ready-to-use injectable. We transferred suspensions of monolayer-cultured ASCs to a syringe containing hyaluronic acid (HA) gel, and then incubated the syringe as a 3D culture vessel. Spheroids of cells formed after 12 h. We found that 6 × 106 ASCs/ml in 3% HA gel achieved the highest spheroid density with appropriate spheroid sizes (20-100 µm). Immunocytology revealed th

Design of Chemical Conjugate for Targeted Therapy of Multiple Sclerosis Based of Constant Fragment of Human Antibody Heavy Chain and Peptoid Analog of Autoantigen MOG35-55.

Elimination of B cells producing autoantibodies to neuroantigens is considered as beneficial in the treatment of multiple sclerosis. Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) is a significant autoantigen in multiple sclerosis. It was shown that MOG-like peptoid AMogP3 can bind autoantibodies produced by pathological lymphocytes. We propose a structure of an innovative drug for targeted elimination of the pool of autoreactive B cells responsible for multiple sclerosis pathogenesis; this compound is a complex of peptoid AMogP3 with Fc fragment of human immunoglobulin. The obtained Fc-PEG-AMogP3

Genipin-crosslinked gelatin microspheres as a strategy to prevent postsurgical peritoneal adhesions: In vitro and in vivo characterization.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal adhesions are a common complication after abdominal surgery. They cause small bowel obstruction, female infertility and chronic abdominal pain. Peritoneal adhesions also hamper uniform drug distribution in the peritoneal cavity, thereby reducing the efficacy of intraperitoneal chemotherapy after cytoreductive surgery. AIM: The goal of this study was to develop a formulation that prevents peritoneal adhesions, evenly distributes in the abdominal cavity, and simultaneously extends residence time and improves local drug concentration. This report describes the formulation
