An unusual complication of tooth exfoliation and osteonecrosis following herpes zoster infection of trigeminal nerve: a case report and literature review.

Osteonecrosis following herpes zoster infection is a rare but severe complication, and clinicians' awareness is important for early detection and management of this condition. A case of herpes zoster of the left maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve is reported in a young female having no concurrent predisposing factors, with accompanying rare complications of alveolar bone necrosis and rapid tooth exfoliation. Acyclovir was used to manage the case effectively. The previously reported similar cases in the literature have been reviewed and the pathophysiology of tooth exfoliation and osteo

Facial dermatosis associated with Demodex: a case-control study.

Demodex has been considered to be related with multiple skin disorders, but controversy persists. In this case-control study, a survey was conducted with 860 dermatosis patients aged 12 to 84 years in Xi'an, China to identify the association between facial dermatosis and Demodex. Amongst the patients, 539 suffered from facial dermatosis and 321 suffered from non-facial dermatosis. Demodex mites were sampled and examined using the skin pressurization method. Multivariate regression analysis was applied to analyze the association between facial dermatosis and Demodex infestation, and to identify

Management of benign skin lesions commonly affecting the face: actinic keratosis, seborrheic keratosis, and rosacea.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Patients commonly present to the otolaryngologist for management of benign facial lesions. It is important to be able to both recognize these lesions and offer patients the most effective therapies currently available. Advances in the understanding and management of three of the more common benign skin lesions affecting the face will be addressed in this review, with a particular emphasis on the most current therapeutic options for each lesion. RECENT FINDINGS: Actinic keratosis can now be treated with photodynamic therapy or with many topical agents, as alternatives to tra

Oral and maxillofacial myiasis associated with epidermoid carcinoma: a case report.

Myiasis is a term derived from the Greek word "myia", meaning invasion of vital tissue of humans or other mammals by fly larvae. The deposited eggs develop into larvae, which penetrate deep structures causing adjacent tissue destruction. It is an uncommon clinical condition, being more frequent in underdeveloped countries and hot climate regions, and is associated with poor hygiene, suppurative oral lesions, alcoholism and senility. Its diagnosis is made basically by the presence of larvae. This paper reports a case of oral and maxillofacial myiasis involving 273 larvae in a patient with epide

Pseudozoster clinical presentation of Demodex infestation after prolonged topical steroid use.

A 60-year-old man presented with a plaque lesion on the upper right half of the face, which had developed after ophthalmic varicella zoster infection about 2 years previously. The lesion, which was burning and itchy, included a few tiny erythematous pustules, and was slightly squamous and infiltrated. The lesion covered the upper two-thirds of the right trigeminal nerve dermatome, involving half of the face with the forehead, the periorbital area, upper part of the cheek and the nose. The lesion became more marked after continuous topical anaesthetic and corticosteroid use. A standardized skin

Human T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma virus type 1-associated infective dermatitis in Africa: a report of five cases from Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Infective dermatitis (ID) is a rare dermatological condition of childhood that has been linked to human T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma virus type 1 (HTLV-1). Most cases have been reported in the Caribbean. Although several million people are estimated to be infected by HTLV-1 in sub-Saharan Africa, no case of ID has been reported in this area. OBJECTIVES: To identify and to describe cases of HTLV-1-associated ID in Senegal, West Africa. METHODS: Over a 3-year period, a serological test for HTLV-1 was performed at a dermatological centre in Dakar, Senegal, in children who presented wit

Pyoderma faciale: gram-negative recovery by means of needle aspiration.

Pyoderma faciale is an inflammatory disease that until now was believed to occur only in women. Bacterial pathogens have not been found in most cases, and those found included only gram-positive microorganisms. We present 2 cases consistent with pyoderma faciale--one of them a 17-year-old adolescent boy--in which gram-negative bacteria were found. Enterobacter cloacae was found in one patient, and Klebsiella oxytoca was found in the other. Needle aspiration is the technique of choice in looking for pathogens in this disease.

Lymphocytic infiltration of the skin is a photosensitive variant of lupus erythematosus: evidence by phototesting.

BACKGROUND: Lymphocytic infiltration of the skin (LIS) is a disorder in which photosensitivity has been suspected but never proven. OBJECTIVES: To carry out a systematic photobiological investigation in patients with LIS and to compare the photobiological features of LIS with those of other photosensitive disorders. METHODS: We performed provocative phototesting with ultraviolet (UV) A and UVB in 10 patients with active LIS. RESULTS: In all patients, UVA and/or UVB elicited abnormal papular phototest reactions resembling lesions of LIS both clinically and histologically. Lesions typically d

Epstein-Barr virus-associated lymphoproliferative skin lesion with recurrent necrotic papulovesicles of the face.

A 24-year-old man showed recurrent necrotic papulovesicles of the face. The cutaneous lesions started with erythema, followed by vesicles, necrosis, and crusting, and leaving depressed scars. Light avoidance did not prevent the development of the lesions. Histologic examination revealed lymphoproliferative lesions confined to the skin. Latent Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection was detected in the lymphoid cells from the skin lesions by in situ hybridization. A moderate to high dosage of corticosteroids suppressed the development of new skin lesions, but relapses occurred when these systemic co
