Inappropriate treatment or untreated fractures of the zygomaticoorbital area results in secondary deformities such as loss of malar projection, enophthalmos, and dystopia. Secondary deformities can be corrected with osteotomies, contour restoration, or a combination of both. Contour restoration can be performed with using onlay grafting with autogenous material or alloplastic implants. In this study, mild to moderate secondary deformities of zygomaticoorbital fractures were corrected with porous a polyethylene implant, which is a highly biocompatible, durable, and stable material. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The aim of the work is to provide an overview of the existing experience in Synthes unreamed humeral nail (UHN).
MATERIAL: Between August 1996 and February 2000 we treated by means of UHN a group of 37 patients (12 men and 25 women), average age 55 years (range, 18-87 years) with a fracture of humeral shaft. According to AO classification in 10 patients it was a case of a fracture of proximal humerus involving the shaft (11B-3) and in 27 cases a fracture of the shaft (12 A, B, C). The whole group was operated on by 11 surgeons.
METHOD: In 26 cases we used the antegrade

BACKGROUND: In treatment of unstable trochanteric fractures dynamic hip screw and Medoff sliding plate devices are designed to allow secondary fracture impaction, whereas intramedullary nails aim to maintain fracture alignment. Different treatment protocols are used by two similar Swedish regional emergency care hospitals. Dynamic hip screw is used for fractures considered as stable within the respective treatment protocol, whereas one treatment protocol (Medoff sliding plate/dynamic hip screw) uses biaxial Medoff sliding plate for unstable pertrochanteric fractures and uniaxial Medoff sliding

PURPOSE: Weperformed a retrospective case-control study to explore the hypothesis that conditions adjacent to Lister's tubercle (LT) in patients with distal radial fractures (DRFs) exhibiting dorsal comminution would influence the extent of the delayed extensor pollicis longus (EPL) rupture.
METHODS: Among patients treated by volar locking plates (VLPs) were placed between March 2011 and December 2015, 314 met inclusion/exclusion criteria and were analyzed. We designated group 1 as the "EPL rupture" and group 2 as the "no EPL rupture". Basic demographic data, radiological findings, and operat

The aim of this non-randomised prospective study was to evaluate the short-term outcome of Gamma nail and dynamic hip screw (DHS) fixation in the treatment of subtrochanteric hip fractures due to low-energy trauma in the elderly. All of the 1,624 femoral hip fractures in 1,511 patients of the Oulu Hospital, aged over 49 years, were prospectively registered from 1991-1999 using special forms. Seventy-three (4.5%) of the fractures were subtrochanteric. After exclusions, 58 patients constituted the final study group. Of these, 43 were treated with Gamma nails and 15 with DHS. BACKGROUND: Pilon fractures result in substantial morbidity and are associated with a high rate of ankle arthritis. However, literature is scarce regarding the prevalence of posttraumatic subtalar arthritis. Tibiotalocalcaneal (TTC) arthrodesis, or hindfoot nailing, is increasingly used for comminuted pilon fractures, which often involve the subtalar joint. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and severity of posttraumatic subtalar arthritis, to better understand the implications of this surgical technique in these cases.
METHODS: Patients who sustained a pilon fracture and underwent

Lisfranc fracture-dislocation can be a devastating injury with significant long-term sequelae, including degenerative joint disease, progressive arch collapse, and chronic pain that can be potentiated if not effectively treated. We present a case to demonstrate our preferred surgical approach, consisting of combined medial column primary arthrodesis, middle column open reduction internal fixation, and lateral column pinning, with the primary goal of minimizing common long-term complications associated with Lisfranc injuries. We present the case of a typical patient treated according to this co

INTRODUCTION: Lateral locking plates are commonly employed for the fixation of distal femur fractures. However, scenarios involving medial comminution, extremely distal fractures, periprosthetic fractures, or nonunion could necessitate medial augmentation. This study explores the possibility of using lateral distal femoral locking plate systems for medial fixation by employing the contralateral plate.
METHODS: This study presents a technical note on the application of lateral distal femur locking systems for medial augmentation in patients as indicated by current literature findings. Postoper

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to present a case series emphasizing low medial maxillary (pyriform) buttress displacement in naso-orbito-ethmoid (NOE) fractures as an operative indication, in the absence of the typical NOE surgical indications (medial canthus displacement, midface bony comminution, nasal bone collapse, and orbital indications), to prevent nasal airway obstruction.
METHODS: Five cases of minor NOE fractures are reviewed, where only the low medial maxillary buttress was displaced. The typical surgical indications for NOE repair were absent.
RESULTS: In each case, the pyrif

In digital replantation, Kirschner wire (K-wire) fixation has commonly been used for osteosynthesis. On the other hand, K-wires are often obtrusive because of protrusion from the replanted digit. We describe a case series treated using hydroxyapatite/poly-L-lactide (HPLLA) threaded pins, which are not only bioabsorbable, but also osteoconductive, for osteosynthesis in crushed amputation or comminuted fracture, including distal phalanx amputation. Using an HPLLA threaded pin, 10 digital replantations were performed between July 2016 and April 2018. The precisely cut pin is manually pushed into

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis is an extremely disabling affliction that causes problems in mastication, digestion, speech, appearance, and hygiene. The disease also has an impact on the psychological development of the patients.
CASE REPORT: A 49-year-old male patient came to our unit with complaint of restriction in his alimentation and of mouth opening. In the anamnesis, the patient reported that this limitation began 11 years ago, soon after a serious car accident that caused trauma on the face. In the clinical examination, the patient's mouth opening was 1 mm, and th

PURPOSE: Olecranon fracture is a common upper limb fracture, and several surgical approaches have been advocated for its fixation. To overcome the complications associated with common techniques, we present a novel shape-memory alloy concentrator, an alternative for tension band compression, to fix olecranon fracture.
METHODS: Fifty-seven patients (26 men and 31 women) with olecranon fracture, with a mean age of 45 years, were included in this study. Each patient had undergone open reduction and internal fixation using the Nitinol (Ni-Ti) arched shape-memory connector (ASC). The clinical asse

In the physiologically compromised elderly patient with an acetabular fracture, nonoperative treatment is associated with functional outcomes (as indicated by the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index [WOMAC] scores) similar to those seen in healthier patients who undergo open reduction and internal fixation, with similar mortality and lesser need for late conversion to total hip arthroplasty. Open reduction and internal fixation of displaced acetabular fractures in patients older than 60 years of age is an excellent option provided that the patient does not have risk

PURPOSE: Miniplates were initially developed as targets for foot and hand fractures, but they have been used in the treatment of fixation of small bone fragments, reduction of long bone fractures and non-union treatment, which have been difficult to treat. In this study, the authors used miniplates to treat fractures of the upper extremities, lower extremities, and pelvis obtained good outcomes. Herein, the authors report these good outcomes and review the current concept of miniplates.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-two patients treated with miniplates between March 2012 and March 2017 who atte

RATIONALE: Femoral head fracture is a rare type of fracture commonly associated with hip dislocation. Femoral head fracture treatments include conservative treatment, fragment excision, open reduction, internal fixation, and arthroplasty. In cases of young patients, open reduction and internal fixation are preferred over arthroplasty. Pipkin type 2 fractures are treated with open reduction and internal fixation in most cases because the fracture line extends upward of the fovea and includes the femoral head-acetabular weight-bearing joint surface. However, if the fracture is severely comminute

Objectives The present study aims to identify preoperative characteristics of the patient, of the injury, as well as of imaging, which would point towards a type IV fracture. The present study shall help the operating team to predict more accurately the type IV pattern preoperatively, leading to improved counselling of the caregivers, planning of surgery, as well as preparedness regarding open reduction, if such situation arises. Methods A retrospective study was conducted, including patients that met the following criteria: 1) age < 16 years old; 2) Gartland type-III and type-IV supracondyl

Closed, reamed, antegrade nailing remains the standard of care for femoral shaft fractures. This technique however, may be less attractive in the management of femoral shaft fractures associated with (a) ipsilateral acetabular, pelvis, or femoral neck fractures; (b) poly trauma requiring multiple simultaneous surgical procedures; and (c) pregnancy. We now report on our experience with the retrograde femoral nailing as a treatment option in these situations. Between 4/88 and 10/90, 29 retrograde femoral nailing in 24 patients were attempted. Average age was 29.3 (16-74) years. Five fractures we
