Associations between helminth infection and CD4+ T cell count, viral load and cytokine responses in HIV-1-infected Ugandan adults.

It has been proposed that helminth infection may exacerbate HIV progression by promoting activation of 'type 2' immune responses. To examine this hypothesis, we investigated helminth infection in a cohort of HIV-1-seropositive adults in Entebbe, Uganda, during November 1999 to January 2000. Individuals with helminths were treated. At enroLlment, after 5 weeks and after 4 months, CD4+ and CD8+ T cell counts and viral load were measured. Cytokine responses (interferon [IFN]-gamma, interleukin [IL]-2, IL-4 and IL-5) to Schistosoma mansoni adult worm antigen (SWA), Mycobacterium tuberculosis cultu

Assessing expanded community wide treatment for schistosomiasis: Baseline infection status and self-reported risk factors in three communities from the Greater Accra region, Ghana.

BACKGROUND: This paper reports on the baseline prevalence and associated risk factor findings of a pilot, longitudinal study exploring community-wide treatment of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis, using albendazole plus praziquantel in the Greater Accra region of Ghana. METHOD: From three communities, at least, 658 individuals were enrolled into the study via random household selection. Prevalence and intensity of schistosomiasis and STH infection were determined from stool and urine samples with a questionnaire being administered in order to explore other morbidities and ri…

Climate change effects on trematodiases, with emphasis on zoonotic fascioliasis and schistosomiasis.

The capacity of climatic conditions to modulate the extent and intensity of parasitism is well known since long ago. Concerning helminths, a … detectable than modifications in microparasite populations. Similarly, the relation of changes in a helminthiasis with climatic factor changes, as extreme events elapsed relatively long time ago, may be overlooked if not concretely searched for. All indicates that this phenomenon has been the reason for previous analyses to conclude that helminthiases do not co …

Persistence of soil-transmitted helminth infections among school-age children after multiple rounds of mass drug administration in Machame Narumu, Hai District, north-eastern Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: All districts in Tanzania Mainland are endemic for soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections, and have implemented at least five rounds of preventive chemotherapy targeting school-age children (SAC) in primary schools. However, there is limited information on the prevalence of STH infections in many parts of the country. Therefore, the present study was carried out to determine the prevalence and factors associated with STH infections among 5 to 14-year-old in primary schools in Machame Narumu, Hai District, north-eastern Tanzania. METHODS: A school-based cross-sectional study was

Prevalence and determinants of soil transmitted helminth infections among children on Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) in Mulobezi and Sesheke Districts, Zambia: A cross - sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are a major public health challenge in regions where they overlap with HIV/AIDS. Children with HIV may be especially vulnerable to STHs due to immunosuppression, yet the burden and drivers of this co-infection among those on antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Zambia are not well documented. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and identify the key determinants of STH infections among ART-treated children in Western (Mulobezi and Sesheke districts) Zambia. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study with a retrospective clinical rev

Tuft cell acetylcholine is released into the gut lumen to promote anti-helminth immunity.

Upon parasitic helminth infection, activated intestinal tuft cells secrete interleukin-25 (IL-25), which initiates a type 2 immune response during which lamina propria type 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) produce IL-13. This causes epithelial remodeling, including tuft cell hyperplasia, the function of which is unknown. We identified a cholinergic effector function of tuft cells, which are the only epithelial cells that expressed choline acetyltransferase (ChAT). During parasite infection, mice with epithelial-specific deletion of ChAT had increased worm burden, fitness, and fecal egg counts,
