Severe X-linked chondrodysplasia punctata in nine new female fetuses.

OBJECTIVES: Conradi-Hünermann-Happle [X-linked dominant chondrodysplasia punctata 2 (CDPX2)] syndrome is a rare X-linked dominant skeletal d … epiphysis (7/9) and an irregular aspect of the spine (5/9). Postnatal X-rays and examination showed ichthyosis (8/9) and epiphyseal stippling (9/9), with frequent asymmetric short and bowed long bones. The X-inactivation pattern of the familial case revealed skewed X-inactivation in the mildly symptomatic mother and random X-inactivation in the severe fetal …

Relationship between autoantibody and dermatosis in myelodysplastic syndrome.

We analyzed the relationship between autoantibody and dermatosis in 22 patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). These MDS patients cons … uritus senilis. The four MDS patients without autoantibody had dermatosis such as erythema nodosum, ichthyosis vulgaris, Sweet syndrome, and thrombophlebitis. Three of four MDS patients with RF had normal liver function tests, while three MDS patients with ANA showed liver dysfunction. Our studies presented here suggested that the dermatosis could develop fr …

A Compound Heterozygous Cathepsin C Mutations Causing Phenotypical Papillion Lafevre/Haim-Munk Syndrome: A Case Report and Review of WES Findings.

INTRODUCTION: Cathepsin C (CTSC), a lysosomal cysteine protease, acts as a primary activator of several critical immune enzymes. Mutations in CTSC can cause a variety of conditions, primarily Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS) and Haim-Munk syndrome (HMS), both rare autosomal recessive palmoplantar keratoderma (PPK) diseases. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 24-year-old female patient. Her past medical history revealed an undiagnosed condition associated with symptoms of thick, dry, and cracked skin. Additionally, she is of Myanmar heritage and has shared a family history of similar symptoms

Cellular and Metabolic Basis for the Ichthyotic Phenotype in NIPAL4 (Ichthyin)-Deficient Canines.

Mutations in several lipid synthetic enzymes that block fatty acid and ceramide production produce autosomal recessive congenital ichthyoses (ARCIs) and associated abnormalities in permeability barrier homeostasis. However, the basis for the phenotype in patients with NIPAL4 (ichthyin) mutations (among the most prevalent ARCIs) remains unknown. Barrier function was abnormal in an index patient and in canines with homozygous NIPAL4 mutations, attributable to extensive membrane stripping, likely from detergent effects of nonesterified free fatty acid. Cytotoxicity compromised not only lamellar b

Dry skin and pressure ulcer risk: A multi-center cross-sectional prevalence study in German hospitals and nursing homes.

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers are a serious health problem in medical and nursing care. Therefore, effective prevention is crucial. Major pressure ulcer risk factors have been identified but the particular role of dry skin (xerosis cutis) is unclear. OBJECTIVES: To investigate possible associations between dry skin and pressure ulcers focusing on the sacrum/trochanter and at heel/ankle skin areas. DESIGN: Two multicenter cross-sectional studies. SETTINGS/PARTICIPANTS: In 2014 and 2015 thirty nursing homes and thirteen hospitals in Germany participated. In total 3837 participants were included

Harlequin syndrome: two new cases and a management proposal.

The Harlequin syndrome is a rare autonomic disorder, characterized by unilateral diminished sweating and flushing of the face in response to heat or exercise. We present two new cases and evaluate the data of 83 patients described in the literature. We provide diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines.

Youngest netherton patient with infantile asthma.

Netherton syndrome is a very rare disorder characterized with icthyosis, atopy, bamboo hair and intermittant aminoaciduria. The specifity of clinical and histopathological features of netherton syndrome is low in neonates and young infants who presents with predominating erythrodermia. Being the youngest infant presenting with the symptoms of infantile asthma we found it worth to report a six months old girl presenting with the feature of severe respiratory distress, generalized erythrodermia, and brittle hair.

Transglutaminases in disease.

Transglutaminases (TGases) are enzymes that are widely used in many biological systems for generic tissue stabilization purposes. Mutations resulting in lost activity underlie several serious disorders. In addition, new evidence documents that they may also be aberrantly activated in tissues and cells and contribute to a variety of diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Huntington's diseases. In these cases, the TGases appear to be a factor in the formation of inappropriate proteinaceous aggregates that may be cytotoxic. In other cases such as celiac disease, ho

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia in a child with the CHIME neuroectodermal dysplasia syndrome.

The "CHIME" syndrome (MIM#280000) is a rare neuroectodermal disorder comprised of Colobomas of the eye, Heart defects, Ichthyosiform dermatosis, Mental retardation, and Ear defects. We report on the sixth child with this syndrome and the first of these to develop acute lymphoblastic leukemia at age 4 1/2 years. Her major problems included a migratory ichthyosiform dermatosis, multiple skin infections and infestations, bilateral retinal coloboma, developmental delay, seizures, infantile macrosomia, facial anomalies, a duplicated renal collecting system, and conductive hearing loss. Histologic e

Ichthyosiform eruption in a patient with Dubowitz syndrome.

Dubowitz syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by intrauterine and postnatal growth retardation, microcephaly, moderate mental retardation, typical craniofacial anomalies, and eczematous skin lesions. We report a case of Dubowitz syndrome associated with ichthyosiform skin changes.

Helical hairs: a new hair anomaly in a patient with Netherton's syndrome.

A new hair shaft defect, helical hair, is presented. This hair abnormality was found to accompany trichorrhexis invaginata and pili torti in an infant with Netherton's syndrome. The patient's main clinical features included erythroderma since birth, failure to thrive, recurrent infections, hepatosplenomegaly, lymphadenopathy, eosinophilia, hypergammaglobulinemia, and high serum IgE levels. A possible mechanism for the formation of helical hair is reviewed.
