Pharmaceutical services to evacuated U.S. military dependents.

Pharmacy operations on Guam during Operation Fiery Vigil are recounted. In June 1991 Mount Pinatubo, a volcano near Clark Air Base in the Ph … supported the Army Veterinary Service in processing, quarantining, and caring for 1300 pets. Cold, motion sickness, and sunburn preparations and analgesics accounted for more than half the prescriptions filled. Problems included the sheer number of evacuees, language barriers, the difference in formularies used by the pharmacies in the Philippines and Guam, and …

The prevalence of seasickness in a population of French civilian sailors.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness, is the onset of a series of clinical signs when travelling in a means of locomotion. Boats are the most common source of kinetosis, causing seasickness. Although this condition is often benign, it can severely affect the quality of life of seafarers, as well as the quality of their work. The aim of this study is to focus on the point prevalence and characteristics of seasickness in a population of French civilian seafarers from all shipping sectors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: During two months in 2023, we conducted a cross-sectional study based on a questionnaire cont…

Probiotics maintain the gut microbiome homeostasis during Indian Antarctic expedition by ship.

Ship voyage to Antarctica is a stressful journey for expedition members. The response of human gut microbiota to ship voyage and a feasible approach to maintain gut health, is still unexplored. The present findings describe a 24-day long longitudinal study involving 19 members from 38th Indian Antarctic Expedition, to investigate the impact of ship voyage and effect of probiotic intervention on gut microbiota. Fecal samples collected on day 0 as baseline and at the end of ship voyage (day 24), were analyzed using whole genome shotgun sequencing. Probiotic intervention reduced the sea sickness

Using patient self-checklist to improve the documentation of risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting: an implementation project.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common surgical complication, affecting 30-50% of patients and 80% in high risk populations. Successful prevention and management of PONV relies on accurately assessing individual risk prior to surgery. A valid and reliable Apfel score is commonly used to assess patients' risk. It is however challenging to translate this evidence into clinical practice. This evidence-based project aimed to identify the current practice of assessing and documenting the risk factors of PONV prior to surgery, and to develop strategies to improve t

The effects of habituation and adding a rest-frame on experienced simulator sickness in an advanced mobility scooter driving simulator.

The aim of this article is to investigate the effect of a physical rest-frame, habituation and age on simulator sickness in an advanced mobility scooter driving simulator. Twenty-six young and 34 older adults completed a total of 12 drives in an advanced mobility scooter driving simulator over two visits. A 2x2 crossover design was used to measure the effect of a rest frame that was added to the driving simulator on either the first or second visit. The Simulator Sickness Questionnaire was used to measure simulator sickness symptoms. A significant decrease in simulator sickness was observed be

Cybersickness without the wobble: Experimental results speak against postural instability theory.

It has been suggested that postural instability is necessary for cybersickness to occur. Seated and standing subjects used a head-mounted display to view a virtual tunnel that rotated about their line of sight. We found that the offset direction of perceived vertical settings matched the direction of the tunnel's rotation, so replicating earlier findings. Increasing rotation speed caused cybersickness to increase, but had no significant impact on perceived vertical settings. Postural sway during rotation was similar to postural sway during rest. While a minority of subjects exhibited postural

Efficacy of neurostimulation to treat symptoms of Mal de Debarquement Syndrome. A preliminary study using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation.

Mal de debarquement syndrome (MdDS) is a rare and poorly understood condition of perceived continual motion. Using a multiple-case design (n = 13; 8 f; 63.5 ± 12.6 years), this study investigated the efficacy of eight 20-min sessions, over 4 weeks, of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the dorsolateral pre-frontal cortex. Compared to sham, rTMS demonstrated improvement in balance and confidence in daily living activities. rTMS shows promise for the treatment of MdDS. However, larger trials with longer intervention periods are required.

Manipulations to reduce simulator-related transient adverse health effects during simulated driving.

User comfort during simulated driving is of key importance, since reduced comfort can confound the experiment and increase dropout rates. A common comfort-affecting factor is simulator-related transient adverse health effect (SHE). In this study, we propose and evaluate methods to adapt a virtual driving scene to reduce SHEs. In contrast to the manufacturer-provided high-sensory conflict scene (high-SCS), we developed a low-sensory conflict scene (low-SCS). Twenty young, healthy participants drove in both the high-SCS and the low-SCS scene for 10 min on two different days (same time of day, ra

Latent inhibition of rotation chair-induced nausea in healthy male and female volunteers.

OBJECTIVES: Pre-exposure to an environment in which a nausea-inducing body rotation will subsequently be given constitutes a latent inhibition procedure that might act to reduce anticipatory and postrotation nausea. METHODS: This was tested in 24 healthy subjects randomly assigned to receive no pre-exposure (group 0), a single pre-exposure (group 1), or three pre-exposures (group 3). Rotation was standardized as 5 x 1 minute rotation, but the subjects could terminate it on request. Nausea was determined on a 7-item symptom rating scale before, during, and after rotation on days 3 and 4, where

An event-related potentials study on selective attention modulated by vestibular stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the dynamic change of the late attentional selection process under linearly varied vestibular stimuli using event-related potentials (ERPs) technique. METHOD: Thirty-three subjects participated in the experiment. They were exposed to vestibular stimulation of constant angular velocity rotation (10 degrees/s) and four levels of constant angular acceleration rotation, the acceleration was 0.6 degrees/s2, 0.8 degrees/s2, 1.0 degrees/s2, 1.2 degrees/s2 respectively. The same auditory go/no-go cognitive task was done during the stimulation. The task involved verbally given Ch

[The role of the delta sleep-inducing peptide in the formation of neuropathological syndromes].

The authors considered the pathogenetic role of delta-sleep inducing peptide (DSIP) in different neuropathological syndromes development and manifestation. According to own as well as published in the literature data authors showed the parkinsonian and the rotational syndromes development following DSIP central administration. Briefly, DSIP is a neuropeptide which play significant role in the mechanisms of development of different neuropathological syndromes, namely, epileptic, parkinsonian, withdrawal, rotational and others syndromes.

Seasickness as a self-fulfilling prophecy: raising self-efficacy to boost performance at sea.

Applying the self-fulfilling prophecy (SFP) approach to combating seasickness, the authors experimentally augmented the self-efficacy of naval cadets by telling them that they were unlikely to experience seasickness and that, if they did, it was unlikely to affect their performance at sea. Naval cadets (N = 25) in the Israel Defense Forces were randomly assigned to experimental and control conditions. At the end of a 5-day training cruise, experimental cadets reported less seasickness and were rated as better performers by naive training officers than were the control cadets. There was a nonsi

A model for vestibular function in altered gravitational states.

During evolution, the vestibular organ was made to serve mainly two purposes: 1) to guide eye movements during sharp turns, so that the point of fixation in the visual field can be kept steady, a function accomplished by the semicircular canal system and 2) to indicate the terrestrial vertical, so that upright posture and gait can be maintained even in the dark. The otolith system serves the latter purpose. Since the function of the semicircular canal system does not depend on gravity, it is not grossly disturbed by gravitational levels different from 1 g. The proper function of the otolith sy

A Sensory Adaptation Program for Individuals With Mal de Débarquement Syndrome: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Mal de débarquement syndrome (MdDS) is a rare disorder characterized by persistent oscillatory sensations following exposure to prolonged passive motion. Inadequate readaptation of the sensory balance systems may contribute to MdDS symptoms. Sensory adaptation exercises modify sensory input to improve balance and reduce symptoms; however, research on this intervention in MdDS is limited. The purpose of this case series was to describe a sensory adaptation program for individuals with MdDS and report changes in perceived severity of oscillatory motion, balance, and patie

Functional brain networks and neuroanatomy underpinning nausea severity can predict nausea susceptibility using machine learning.

KEY POINTS: Nausea is an adverse experience characterised by alterations in autonomic and cerebral function. Susceptibility to nausea is difficult to predict, but machine learning has yet to be applied to this field of study. The severity of nausea that individuals experience is related to the underlying morphology (shape) of the subcortex, namely of the amygdala, caudate and putamen; a functional brain network related to nausea severity was identified, which included the thalamus, cingulate cortices (anterior, mid- and posterior), caudate nucleus and nucleus accumbens. Sympathetic nervous sys
