A series of experiments were carried out to investigate the role of proteinase enzymes in the growth of larvae of the sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina. First, instar larvae were incubated on an artificial growth media in the presence of various concentrations of inhibitors of all the major proteinase classes. Inhibitors of serine proteinases and aminopeptidases were found to cause significant growth inhibition and in some cases death of the larvae within 24 h, suggesting that these enzymes were the major classes involved in protein digestion in the gut of the insect. A second group of experiment

The humoral immune response of sheep to wohlfahrtiosis was studied. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was developed to compare four different types of antigens obtained from the third-stage larvae of Wohlfahrtia magnifica. The antigen prepared from salivary glands detected a humoral response in all 35 infested sheep and was more specific in the ELISA than cuticular, intestinal or whole larval antigens. The level of the humoral response in sheep to wohlfahrtiosis differed according to the location of the wounds.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy of ivermectin in an intraruminal controlled-release capsule (CRC) against blowfly strike.
DESIGN: Pen and field trials with controls.
ANIMALS: Pen studies: Two breech strike trials involving 60 Romney and 60 Merino sheep. One body strike trial using 100 Merino sheep. Field trials: Eight trials in New Zealand used 1000 Romney and Romney-cross sheep. Fifty Merino lambs in one trial in Australia.
PROCEDURE: Pen studies: Sheep were allocated to two equal groups. One was not treated, the other sheep received a CRC that delivered ivermectin at > or = 20 micr

Six cattle that had earlier exposure to Dermatobia hominis were infested experimentally with first-instar larvae of the parasite. Skin biopsies taken at intervals were studied in wax and in plastic sections. The avidin-biotin-peroxidase method was used to detect the presence and localization of host immunoglobulins (Igs) G and M and antigens of first and second instar larvae of Dermatobia hominis. The larvae penetrated actively through the skin and migrated towards the subcutaneous tissues. The great numbers of eosinophils suggest that they are the most important cell in mediating damage to D.

Four first stage larval antigens from the sheep blowfly were identified using supernatants from cultures of antibody secreting cells. These partially purified larval antigens, when added to Montanide ISA-25 containing recombinant ovine IL-1 beta (rovIL-1 beta) were used to successfully vaccinate sheep against larvae of the sheep blowfly. Significantly less strikes were recorded on vaccinated sheep compared to controls (P < 0.033) with surviving larvae from vaccinated sheep up to 85% smaller than larvae from control sheep. RovIL-1 beta was found to be an important component of the vaccine. Vacc

Tissue extracts from larval instars of the sheep nasal bot, Oestrus ovis, were resolved by gel electrophoresis under both native and denaturing conditions. Polypeptides resolved under these conditions were tested by immunoblotting against sera of infested sheep. Of all tissues examined in this study, salivary glands proved to be major immunogens in infested sheep. Salivary gland polypeptides were also detected in the washing solution as larval secretory products (LSP). To a minor extent, a few polypeptides from the larval cuticle were also found to be immunogenic, but they did not contribute t

Greasy wool production, body weight, behaviour and fertility of male, fine wool Merino sheep were studied from 10 to 21 months of age to assess their suitability for wool production. The males were either castrated (wethers), or were hemi-castrated with a vasectomy and reduction (either partially or in full) of the parenchyma of the retained testicle, or the testicles pushed up into the inguinal canal and the scrotum shortened (induced cryptorchids). There were significant differences among all groups in body weight, with increases being associated with the larger amounts of testicular tissue

Ophthalmomyiasis is a rare entity caused by infestation with certain dipterous larvae. We describe a 71-year-old farmer with herpes zoster ophthalmicus on the left side of the face in whom the blisters became secondarily infested with Chrysomyia bezziana maggots. The maggots were removed mechanically, and the corneal involvement secondary to zoster ophthalmicus responded to therapy with topical steroids and cycloplegics. To our knowledge this is the first report of external ophthalmomyiasis due to C. bezziana.

Lesions were formed in the mouth of the horse by first- and second-stage Gasterophilus intestinalis larvae. The lesions resulted as larvae burrowed through the top millimeter of the tongue and then became embedded in the interdental gingiva. Appearance of the lesion was dependent on the degree of larval burrowing activity and healing that had taken place. Active tunneling production occurred at the posterior end of the lesion. Extensive change in configuration and color was apparent along the longer lesions with active larvae. Virtually all tissue in the path of the larvae was removed while fo

In a two-year study, from January 1977 to December 1978, 80 human cases of ophthalmomyiasis were recorded at the Benghazi Central Eye Clinic. Infections were due to larvae of the sheep nasal bot, Ostrus ovis. The annual incidence was estimated to be 10 per 100,000 population, with most of the cases occurring amongst males during the months of May, June and July. A typical case history is described to illustrate the clinical features and the treatment used.

In French Guayana, climatic and geographic conditions enhance development of numerous fungal, parasitic and microbial skin diseases. The most particular infectious diseases of this French department are lobomycosis, chromomycosis (Phialophora pedrosoi), creeping disease, cutaneous leishmaniasis, tungiasis, mycobacterial ulcus (Mycobacterium ulcerans) and papular dermatitis caused by nettling hairs of lepidoptera (Hylesia urticans). The occurence of these skin diseases is demonstrative of pathological ecology of the Amazonian country.

The present study investigates the developmental process of Chrysomya rufifacies (Macquart) pupae and their dependency on soil composition, moisture levels, and temperature changes. This research holds implications for forensic and veterinary applications, providing crucial insights for estimating minimum postmortem intervals and managing myiasis-causing flies in diverse environments. Specifically, the study explores the impact of five moisture content levels in loam and sandy soils (0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80%) on the pupal development of Ch. rufifacies under two distinct constant temperature …

Fecundity selection is a critical component of fitness and a major driver of adaptive evolution. Trade-offs between parasite mortality and h … is a reliable proxy for fecundity in insects. Here we explore temporal changes in body size in the myiasis-causing parasite Philornis downsi (Diptera: Muscidae) on the Galápagos Islands under conditions of earlier in-nest host mortality. We aim to investigate the effects of decreasing host resources on parasite body size and fecundity. Across a 12-year p …

The aim of this study was to assess the suitability of PCR and ELISA as diagnostic method in young sheep naturally infested by Oestrus ovis larvae. The experiment was carried out from December 2020 to April 2021 with 39 lambs divided into two groups: infested (n = 26) and control treated group (n = 13). The infested group did not receive treatment against oestrosis, and the control group was treated with closantel (10 mg/kg orally) every 28 days in order to keep the animals as free as possible of O. ovis infestation. The clinical signs varied among animals regardless of the number of recovered
