Prejunctional inhibition of cholinergic responses by prostaglandin E2 in human bronchi.

The effect of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) on cholinergic responses elicited by electrical field stimulation (EFS) (8 Hz, 1 ms, 8 V for 10 s every 100 s) of human isolated human bronchi was studied. Indomethacin (1 microM) was found to produce approximately a 100% increase in the cholinergic response. In the presence of indomethacin, PGE2 (1-300 nM) was found to concentration-dependently inhibit the cholinergic responses to EFS. A maximal inhibition was obtained with 100 nM PGE2 which produced an 80% inhibition of the cholinergic response. By contrast 100 nM PGE2 was without significant effect on t

Nitric oxide as a mediator of parasympathetic vasodilation in ocular and extraocular tissues in the rabbit.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate in rabbits the relationship between nitric oxide and the noncholinergic vasodilation caused by facial nerve stimulation in the eye and some extraocular tissues. METHODS: Uveal vascular resistance was determined by measuring simultaneously the flow from a cannulated vortex vein with intraocular pressure and arterial blood pressure recordings. The local blood flow in different parts of the eye (iris, ciliary body, choroid, and retina), eyelids, nictitating membrane, Harderian gland, and lacrimal gland was determined using radioactive microsphere

["Pseudoneurotransmission" and gut microbiome - brain communication in neuropsychiatric disorders].

The gut microbiome, which comprises symbiotic bacteria colonizing the human digestive tract, undergoes dynamic changes during the lifespan, as evidenced by the fact that the number of species and the diversity of their composition decrease significantly with age. The aim of this review is to illuminate bilateral neuroimmunological pathways that determine the role of gut microbiome dysbiosis, not only as a cause but also as a byproduct of many neurodegenerative diseases of the CNS, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), but also in the frame of several behavioral and psy

The influence of piroxicam, a non-selective cyclooxygenase inhibitor, on autonomic nervous system activity in experimental cyclophosphamide-induced hemorrhagic cystitis and bladder outlet obstruction in rats.

Signs and symptoms of secondary overactive bladder (OAB) are observed both in course of infravesical obstruction of urine outflow in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia, and as a result of development of hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) following administration of cyclophosphamide (CP). Non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) alleviate symptoms of bladder overactivity reducing local synthesis of prostaglandins (PGs), but precise effects of those agents on functions of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in course of OAB remain unknown. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect

δEPCD: the electrophysiologic coefficient of depressiveness.

Despite research advances, recently identified biological markers for depression are either non-specific or impractical in daily clinical practice. Hence, we aim to identify a novel biomarker: δEPCD, the electrophysiologic coefficient of depressiveness. δEPCD must be sensitive and specific to the vulnerability towards depression. It should also detect the presence of a depressive clinical state and be able to quantify its severity. Moreover, it should be easily accessible and cost-effective. Accordingly, combining high-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV), which reflects a reduction in va

A distributed event-triggered framework for coordinating athlete autonomic states via wearable sensor networks.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal autonomic physiology (IAP) research has established that physiological synchrony (PS), the temporal interdependence of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity across individuals, is an established phenomenon in team-based settings. However, PS in athlete cohorts has been studied exclusively as a passive observational variable; no framework actively regulates autonomic coherence under the communication constraints of wireless body area networks. This study integrates IAP and distributed control theory by formulating team-level autonomic coherence as a leaderless multi-

Daily changes in sleep stages and associated cardiovascular parameters during pregnancy: using a wearable device.

OBJECTIVE: Growing evidence links sleep disturbances with gestational hypertension and/or preeclampsia. Most studies rely on self-reported surveys that cannot capture sleep stages as objective indicators of cardiovascular health. The objective of this study was to utilize a wearable device to describe changes in nightly sleep stages during pregnancy and investigate their relationships with resting heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV). METHODS: This longitudinal descriptive study encompassed 981 observation days among 14 pregnant women, 86% of whom self-identified as Hispanic. The

Pharmacometabolic Effects of Pteryxin and Valproate on Pentylenetetrazole-Induced Seizures in Zebrafish Reveal Vagus Nerve Stimulation.

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) assays provide a versatile pharmacological platform to test compounds on a wide range of behaviors in a whole organism. A major challenge lies in the lack of knowledge about the bioavailability and pharmacodynamic effects of bioactive compounds in this model organism. Here, we employed a combined methodology of LC-ESI-MS/MS analytics and targeted metabolomics with behavioral experiments to evaluate the anticonvulsant and potentially toxic effects of the angular dihydropyranocoumarin pteryxin (PTX) in comparison to the antiepileptic drug sodium valproate (VPN) in zebrafi

Music-Enhanced Analgesia and Antiseizure Activities in Animal Models of Pain and Epilepsy: Toward Preclinical Studies Supporting Development of Digital Therapeutics and Their Combinations With Pharmaceutical Drugs.

Digital therapeutics (software as a medical device) and mobile health (mHealth) technologies offer a means to deliver behavioral, psychosocial, disease self-management and music-based interventions to improve therapy outcomes for chronic diseases, including pain and epilepsy. To explore new translational opportunities in developing digital therapeutics for neurological disorders, and their integration with pharmacotherapies, we examined analgesic and antiseizure effects of specific musical compositions in mouse models of pain and epilepsy. The music playlist was created based on the modular pr

Early autonomic dysfunction in patients with diabetes mellitus assessed by spectral analysis of heart rate and blood pressure variability.

Patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) often have alterations of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), even early in their disease course. Previous research has not evaluated whether these changes may have consequences on adaptation mechanisms in DM, e.g. to mental stress. We therefore evaluated whether patients with DM who already had early alterations of the ANS reacted with an abnormal regulatory pattern to mental stress. We used the spectral analysis technique, known to be valuable and reliable in the investigation of disturbances of the ANS. We investigated 34 patients with DM without clinica

Clay field therapy for complex PTSD: a single-case study with HRV measurement.

INTRODUCTION: Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) is associated with dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system, measurable through heart rate variability (HRV); however, the impact of sensorimotor approaches on these markers remains poorly documented. This single-case study examines variations in HRV indices across a ten-session weekly protocol of Clay Field Therapy (CFT) in a 58-year-old woman with CPTSD (DSM-5, TEC, TADS-I) and multiple developmental traumas. The CFT process aligns with sensorimotor therapy principles and Herman's three-phase model of complex trauma treatment.

Heart rate and heart rate variability responses during three exercise tests and recovery in horses participating in the Fédération Équestre Internationale Eventing World Challenge.

BACKGROUND: Horses competing in eventing competitions encounter significant challenges that increase their risk of severe injuries and metabolic disorders. Numerous studies have focused on the risk of such injuries and disorders during the cross-country segment. While one study has examined autonomic responses during this segment, research on these responses across all three phases of competition, particularly during one-day events, is still limited. The objective of this study was to analyse the autonomic responses of horses by measuring heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) during

The Impact of Physical Activity on Suicide Attempt in Children: A Systematic Review.

Suicide in children is a major global health crisis, with profound impacts on families, friends, and society. Understanding ways to ameliorate the rate of suicide attempt (SA) is critical given that it is a key factor in predicting future suicide risk. SA is the deliberate act of causing physical injury to oneself with the intent of death. The incidence of SA may be influenced by physical activity (PA). PA includes bodily movement via skeletal muscles that results in energy expenditure and physical fitness. While there is evidence to suggest that PA improves dysregulation of the parasympatheti

Development of neuromodulation for atrial fibrillation: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a prevalent clinical arrhythmia with a high incidence of disability and mortality. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a crucial role in the onset and persistence of AF, and can lead to electrophysiological changes and alterations in atrial structure. Both animal models and clinical findings suggest that parasympathetic and sympathetic activity within the cardiac ANS could induce atrial remodeling and AF. Remodeling of the cardiac autonomic nerves is a significant structural basis for promoting AF. Given the challenges faced by conventiona

Frequent occurrence of postbreakfast syncope due to carotid sinus syndrome after surgery for hypopharyngeal cancer: A case report.

RATIONALE: Syncope often occurs in patients with advanced head and neck cancers due to the stimulation of the autonomic nervous system by the tumor. Here, we describe a case of frequent syncopal episodes after laryngopharyngectomy for hypopharyngeal cancer. As all syncopal episodes were observed during the forenoon, we also evaluated the heart rate variability using ambulatory electrocardiography to determine why the syncopal episodes occurred during a specified period of the day. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 73-year-old Japanese man who underwent laryngopharyngectomy for recurrent hypopharyngeal canc

Heart Rate Variability and Inflammatory Stress Response in Young African American Men: Implications for Cardiovascular Risk.

Background: African American men have a disproportionately higher incidence of and suffer greater severity and earlier death from cardiovascular disease (CVD). A common feature of many diseases, which disproportionately afflict disadvantaged African Americans, is inflammation. In particular, inflammation plays a decisive role in the pathogenesis of CVD in that persistent inflammation contributes to plaque evolution and destabilization. Adverse childhood experiences increase the risk for adult inflammatory based disease, particularly cardiovascular disease. This inflammatory burden becomes evid

Acute effects of different resistance training loads on cardiac autonomic modulation in hypertensive postmenopausal women.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with arterial hypertension often have an autonomic nervous system (ANS) imbalance with predominance of sympathetic ANS. This predominance can lead to injury of several organs affecting its functioning. There is evidence that performing high intensity resistance training (RT) with heavier loads and a lower number of repetitions results in lower cardiovascular stress when compared with lighter loads and a higher number of repetitions. However, the effects of different protocols of RT in autonomic modulation are not known. Therefore, the aim of the study was to analyze and

[USING CORTEXIN TO MANAGE THE CONSEQUENCES OF PERINATAL HYPOXIC BRAIN INJURY IN INFANT RATS].

To verify if the peptide preparation <<Cortexin>> can be used to treat pathological processes in CNS during perinatal ontogenesis, registration and analysis of a series of physiological indicators (EMG, ECG, respiration, vagosympathetic balance) were carried out in control infant rats and in a perinatal hypoxic-is- chemic (HI) brain injury rat model. Ischemic brain injury was induced in 7-day-old rats by ligation of the left general carotid artery (under ether anesthesia) followed by keeping the animals in hypoxic gas cham- ber containing 8 % of oxygen and 92 % of nitrogen (day 1 of the experi
