Three patients suffered from renal pelvic, ureteral and bladder cancers that were treated with both standard surgical treatments and two adjuvant cycles of cisplatin-based combination chemotherapy. Metastases of interaortocaval lymph nodes were detected in all patients between 9 and 33 months from the surgery for primary lesions. All patients received three cycles of cisplatin-based combination chemotherapy and retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND). The chemotherapy achieved partial response (62-98%). Retroperitoneal spillage and infection in ballistic trauma to the large intestine is a difficult surgical problem. Experience with four consecutive cases of high-velocity gunshot wounds to the abdomen, colonic injury, and retroperitoneal fecal spillage is reviewed. The patients underwent repeat exploration of the abdomen and retroperitoneum through ventral and retroperitoneal laparostomies. All patients survived. We report the case of a 55-year old male patient who underwent transanal endoscopic microsurgery for recurrent benign rectal adenoma. He developed severe postoperative retroperitoneal phlegmon and sepsis and died 28 days after the operation due to untreatable diffuse intraabdominal bleeding caused by persistent thrombocytopenia.

Many complications following laparoscopic cholecystectomy have been reported. We report a case of delayed peritoneal and retroperitoneal abscesses caused by spilled gallstones from a laparoscopic cholecystectomy performed 1 year earlier. This diagnosis was suggested only at sonography because the aggressive behavior of the lesions containing nonopaque gallstones suggested, by computed-tomography scan, peritoneal metastatic disease.

Blockade of the superior hypogastric nerve plexus was performed for relief of chronic cancer related pelvic pain. The targeted sympathetic nerves lie anterior to the sacral promontory. Since 1980, we have treated 23 abscesses in 21 pediatric patients by percutaneous needle aspiration or catheter drainage or both. Percutaneous management has been completely successful in 16 of 21 patients and 18 of the 23 abscesses. In two patients, abscess drainage was technically successful and improved the patient's condition, but surgery was later required because of other complicating conditions. Complications found in 47 individuals who underwent radical retroperitoneal node dissection were retrospectively analyzed. Our results indicate no mortality and an over-all complication rate of 29.7 per cent. An increased number of complications was noted in those patients who underwent elective appendectomy and in those node dissection above the renal vessels.
