Unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC) experience a high burden of infectious diseases (IDs) and are a highly vulnerable population gr … studies. However, gaps in the process were evident in areas such as testing for schistosomiasis and strongyloidiasis. Additionally, the appointment completion rate varied across ID services, highlighting some themes in low attendance, in particular a low attendance rate for those 'out of area'. Our key recommendation is the undertaking of further research to infor …

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis is one of the soil-transmitted helminths (STH) in tropical and subtropical regions. The role of lipid profile has been investigated in the survival of larval stages of helminths, but there is limited information about the role of lipid profiles and strongyloidiasis. Hence, we aimed to investigate the seroprevalence of S. stercoralis infection in patients with hyperlipidemia is compared with the nonhyperlipidemia.
METHODS: In 2023, participants were selected from the laboratory of Porsina Hospital in Guilan Province, northern Iran and their lipid profiles …

UNLABELLED: Ivermectin (IVM) is currently approved as an antiparasitic agent for human use in the treatment of onchocerciasis, lymphatic filariasis, strongyloidiasis, scabies, and pediculosis. Recent findings indicate that IVM may reach other pharmacological targets, which accounts for its proven anti-inflammatory/immunomodulatory, cytostatic, and antiviral effects. However, little is known about the assessment of alternative drug formulations for human use.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the systemic availability and disposition kinetics of IVM orally administered as different pharmaceutical formulat…

BACKGROUND: Strongyloidiasis, a neglected disease caused by intestinal nematodes of the genus, is endemic to tropical and subtropical areas such as Vietnam. Morphological methods only identify the genus, while DNA-molecular techniques are susceptible in Strongyloides spp. detection. The study aims to determine the prevalence of dominant Strongyloides species among the population in Duc Hoa district, Long An, Vietnam.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study used 1190 stool specimens collected from July 2017 to November 2018. All samples were transported within 2 h, stored at 2-8°C, and processed with…

Thiabendazole is an anthelmintic drug used to treat strongyloidiasis (threadworm), cutaneous and visceral larva migrans, trichinosis, and other parasites. The active pharmaceutical ingredient is typically administered orally as tablets that should be chewed before swallowing. Current formulations combine the active ingredient with excipients, including sodium saccharinate as a sweetener. Thiabendazole's low aqueous solubility hinders fast dissolution and absorption through the mucous membranes. We sought to reformulate this medicine to improve both solubility and palatability. We utilized the …

Strongyloidiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by the human infective nematodes Strongyloides stercoralis, Strongyloides fuelleborni fuelleborni and Strongyloides fuelleborni kellyi. Previous large-scale studies exploring the genetic diversity of this important genus have focused on Southeast Asia, with a small number of isolates from the USA, Switzerland, Australia and several African countries having been genotyped. Consequently, little is known about the global distribution of geographic sub-variants of these nematodes and the genetic diversity that exists within the genus Strongyl…

An approach to improve the diagnosis of Strongyloides stercoralis infection is the use of serologic assays utilising the NIE antigen from S. … on DBS, and evaluated it in a population screening and mass drug administration programme (MDA) for strongyloidiasis conducted in an Australian indigenous community. Study participants were treated with 200 μg/kg ivermectin (>15 kg) or 3× 400 mg albendazole (<15kg). The sensitivity of the NIE DBS-ELISA was determined by receiver operator characteristic (ROC) analy …

Strongyloidiasis is an intestinal disease that can last for decades due to the occurrence of autoinfective larvae (L3a) in an infected person, which contribute to the maintenance of the population of adult worms in the intestine. The goal of the present study was to determine if L3a are susceptible to the protective immunity that targets the infective stage of the worm, the third-stage larvae (L3). Mice immunized and challenged with Strongyloides stercoralis L3 kill more than 90% of challenge larvae contained within diffusion chambers. The L3 do not remain antigenically static in mice, however…

We report 2 cases of donor-derived Strongyloides stercoralis infection in renal transplant recipients. Despite initial negative serologic testing in donor samples, retrospective testing confirmed transmission. This report underscores the limitations of serologic screening, the need for targeted protocols in endemic-risk populations, and the importance of close posttransplant surveillance.

Strongyloides stercoralis nematode infection occurs in ≈600 million persons worldwide and is listed by the World Health Organization as a neglected tropical disease. Understanding zoonotic potential is critical, especially in areas where humans, domestic animals, and wildlife interact. We explored cross-species sharing of Strongyloides roundworms by analyzing fecal samples from humans, dogs, and nonhuman primates in the Dzanga-Sangha Protected Areas, Central African Republic. We detected positive samples by quantitative PCR and assessed genetic diversity through amplification of the 18S rRNA H

Strongyloides stercoralis is parasite affecting both humans and dogs and is most prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas of Australia. This case report describes two dogs from a household in Sydney, New South Wales, one with chronic gastrointestinal signs and the other who was asymptomatic who were subsequently diagnosed with S. stercoralis. Diagnosis can be challenging in humans and dogs due to intermittent shedding and low worm burdens and in this case the symptomatic dog had Strongyloides spp. rhabitiform larvae detected on a direct faecal smear and PCR, the asymptomatic dog on PCR only

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides nematodes are livestock parasites, and Strongyloides papillosus infecting ruminant livestock can cause disease. Recent genomic analysis of several Strongyloides species is now facilitating population genomic analyses of natural Strongyloides infections, for example finding that Strongyloides ratti in wild UK rats exists as an assemblage of long-lived, asexual lineages.
METHODS: Here we have initiated an investigation into the population genomics of S. papillosus in goats in Pakistan. We sampled Strongyloides from goat faeces and then whole genome sequenced individual

Strongyloides stercoralis infection is not endemic in the Republic of Korea (Korea) with a positivity rate of <1% in stool examination. However, there is a risk of hyperinfection in immunosuppressed individuals. It is necessary to determine the seropositivity of S. stercoralis antibodies in Korea. This study investigated the seropositivity of S. stercoralis antibodies in the southeastern area of Korea. From January 2019 to June 2021, serum samples were collected from participants who visited the study center in the southeastern region of Korea for routine health check-ups. We determined ser

Serodiagnosis is an essential component of the laboratory diagnosis of Strongyloides infection and is usually performed using an indirect IgG antibody test. A direct antigen detection method can complement the IgG assay, particularly for detecting early infection and post-treatment follow-up. In the present study, a recombinant scFv monoclonal antibody against NIE recombinant protein (rMAb23) that we had previously produced was used to develop a Strongyloides antigen detection ELISA (SsAg-ELISA). The assay is based on detecting immune complexes of circulating NIE antigens bound to Strongyloide
