Abductor digiti minimi transfer was used to restore opposition in 20 patients, the majority suffering from congenital anomalies of the hand. The transfer was shown to be effective in restoring abduction, but less effective in restoring the rotational component of opposition in these cases. The donor site was critically reviewed and found to be acceptable. The surgical techniques and benefits of this transfer are reviewed.

This is a retrospective review of 29 patients (33 hands) who underwent a palmaris longus transfer because of severe thenar atrophy secondary to median nerve entrapment at the wrist. The mean follow-up was 17 months. Ninety-four percent of our patients were satisfied because their thumb function improved. Twenty-six of the patients had the transfer at the time of initial release of the carpal tunnel, and three patients had the transfer when the carpal tunnel was released a second time. The transfer helps with thumb palmar abduction, and the palmaris longus is an expendable muscle for transfer.

The classification of miscellaneous clinical features in obstetric palsies is difficult due to variations during growth, regeneration, plexus repair and secondary surgery. Any useful comparison of different forms of therapy requires universally recognised norms of evaluation. Several proposals have already found clinical application. Their employment will help to unify the results of our evaluation.

In 1970, A. F. Dwyer described an operation for severe toe deformities with the objectives of creating a more stable foot and improving toe function, in addition to relieving pain. This was achieved by fusing the metatarsophalangeal joint of the hallux and the proximal interphalangeal joints of the lateral four toes. The metatarsal heads of the second, third, fourth, and fifth rays were then resected with their respective extensor tendons interposed so as to provide a tenodesis effect. Our study presented in this paper consists of 36 consecutive procedures performed on 22 rheumatoid patients.
