Evaluation of Types of Vertigo With Electronystagmography: An Experience From a Tertiary Care Hospital in West Bengal, India.

Background Electronystagmography (ENG) is a diagnostic test that measures the electrical activity of the muscles that control eye movements. ENG has the potential to identify the cause of vertigo by assessing the function of the vestibular system. Vertigo can be of two types - peripheral or central. In addition, a combination of peripheral and central types may coexist. Peripheral vertigo is caused by pathology in the inner ear and central vertigo is caused by pathology in the brainstem or cerebellum. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of ENG in assisting the diagnosis of

Vestibulo-Ocular Responses, Visual Field Dependence, and Motion Sickness in Aerobatic Pilots.

BACKGROUND: Aerobatic flight is a challenge for the vestibular system, which is likely to lead to adaptive changes in the vestibular responses of pilots. We investigated whether aerobatic pilots, as individuals who experience intense vestibular stimulation, present modifications of the vestibular-ocular reflex, motion sickness susceptibility and intensity, visual vertical estimation, and visual dependence as compared to normal volunteers.METHODS: To evaluate vestibulo-ocular reflexes, eye movements were recorded with videonystagmography while subjects were rotated on a rotatory chair with the

Sport-specific differences in dynamic visual acuity and gaze stabilization in division-I collegiate athletes.

BACKGROUND: The vestibular-ocular reflex (VOR) integrates the vestibular and ocular systems to maintain gaze during head motion. This reflex is often negatively affected following sport-related concussion. Objective measures of gaze stability, a function mediated by the VOR, such as the computerized dynamic visual acuity test (DVAT) and gaze stabilization test (GST), may have utility in concussion management. However, normative data specific to sport, sex, or concussion history have not been established in collegiate athletes. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to establish normative

Are the three canals equally susceptible to benign paroxysmal positional vertigo?

A prospective study of patients diagnosed with 'single-canal' benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) was performed. Demographic, etiological and prognostic differences between patients with posterior, horizontal and superior canal BPPV were studied. A total of 614 patients diagnosed in a period of 11 years and with a follow-up period of at least 1 year were included in the study. The posterior semicircular canal was affected in 543 casas (88.4%), the horizontal in 39 (6.4%) and the superior canal in 32 (5.2%). Final status at the end of the follow-up period was better in posterior canal B

Subjective visual vertical in patients with ear surgery.

CONCLUSION: Dysequilibrium is one of the most important side effects of ear surgery. The subjective visual vertical can be used as a good indicator for the evaluation of otolithic function in patients with ear surgery. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of various types of ear surgery on the otolithic organs. METHODS: Seventy-one patients underwent ear surgery. Subjective visual vertical (SVV) test was performed before and after ear surgery. We investigated the directional changes of SVV before and after the ear surgery. RESULTS: The postoperative SVV of two patients who underwent tran

Ipsilateral and contralateral acoustic brainstem response abnormalities in patients with vestibular schwannoma.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze auditory brainstem response (ABR) data in patients with vestibular schwannomas (VS) in an effort to identify correlations between abnormal ABR parameters and tumor size. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study with chart review. SETTING: Tertiary referral hospital. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Retrospective chart review and analysis of bilateral ABR records in patients with VS. Interaural latency differences of interpeak I-V (ILD-I-V) and ILD-V longer than 0.2 ms were used as abnormal criteria. RESULTS: Thirty patients with a mean age of 50 +/- 14 years were included in this stu

Vestibular evoked myogenic potential threshold and seasickness susceptibility.

Numerous attempts have been made to find physiological parameters that might predict susceptibility to seasickness. However, to date, no physiological index has been found that can serve as a diagnostic tool for individual susceptibility to motion sickness at the personnel selection stage. A number of studies have demonstrated that linear acceleration in the vertical plane is the most provocative stimulus of motion sickness. The main physiological sensory modality responsible for monitoring vertical acceleration is the saccule. Over the last decade, vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP)

Cochleovestibular impairment in pediatric Cogan's syndrome.

Cogan's syndrome is a rare, chronic inflammatory disorder that typically targets the eyes and vestibuloauditory apparatus, but it may also involve other organs. Three pediatric cases of Cogan's syndrome (ages 5, 13, and 18 years) are reported with long-term follow-up and complete and regular cochleovestibular functional evaluation and ophthalmologic and neurologic examinations. One case was a typical form (characterized by an interstitial keratitis and cochleovestibular impairment), whereas the other 2 cases were atypical forms with uveitis and polyarthritis. In all 3 cases, the first clinical

[Prognostic criteria in sudden deafness].

The present study was devised to determine whether the pattern of hearing loss has any meaning for prognosis in patients with sudden hearing loss. The audiograms and clinical records of 145 patients with sudden deafness between 1991 and 1993 were reviewed. Forty-eight of the patients were females and 97 were males. All patients had been hospitalized and treated with intravenous infusions of naftidrofuryl. The best recovery rate was seen in patients with low-tone hearing losses (68.8% complete and 25% partial recoveries), whereas in patients with high-tone and flat losses the recovery rates wer

[Giant mucocele of the paranasal sinuses with extension to the contralateral posterior cranial fossa and reversible retrocochlear deafness].

Report on a huge mucocele of the right maxillary sinus extending into the ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses, and protruding into the contralateral left posterior cranial fossa. The patient, a 45-year old male, had no history of paranasal sinus energy, nasal or paranasal symptoms. He went to his physician because of a slowly developing deafness in his left ear and because of episodes of loss of consciousness when blowing his nose. A reversible episode of vertigo and reversible paresis of the left abducent nerve 17 years previously, were later assumed to have been the first symptoms of endocranial ex

Diagnosing and localizing the acute vestibular syndrome - Beyond the HINTS exam.

When assessing the acutely dizzy patient, the HINTS 'Plus' (Head Impulse, Nystagmus, Test of Skew, 'Plus' a bedside assessment of auditory function) exam is a crucial component of the bedside exam. However, there are additional ocular motor findings that can help the clinician distinguish peripheral from central etiologies and enable accurate localization, especially when the patient has acute dizziness, vertigo and/or imbalance but without spontaneous nystagmus. We will review the literature on these findings which are 'beyond HINTS' and include saccades/ocular lateropulsion, smooth pursuit,

Congruence and incongruence on the radiological and functional examination of inner ear hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Inner ear hemorrhage (IEH) is an increasingly recognized cochlear lesion that can cause sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is known to be the best imaging modality for clarifying the causes of SNHL and providing images that point to those causes. AIMS: Evaluate the lesional patterns in patients with presumed Inner ear hemorrhage (IEH) from radiological and functional aspects. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 10 patients performed in our institution from 2014 to 2020, with suspected labyrinthine hemorrhage based on radiological and

The effect of cinnarizine and cocculus indicus on simulator sickness.

Pensacola Simulator Sickness Questionnaire (SSQ) is a valuable method to analyse symptoms evoked by exposure to a flight simulator environment that can also be adopted to evaluate the effectiveness of preventive tools, aiming at reducing simulator sickness (SS). In this study we analysed SSQ data in subjects undergoing a standard ground based spatial disorientation training inside a flight simulator, in order to evaluate the SS prevention obtained with two different pharmacological tools. Twelve males volunteers participated to an experimental design based on a double-blind, balanced administr

[Trans-petrous surgery in acoustic neuroma. Value of preoperative audiovestibular and facial investigation in the risk evaluation of facial nerve function].

Between 1987 and february 1994, 162 consecutive patients with acoustic neuroma were operated on by an otoneurosurgery team, using transpetrous approaches (89% translabyrinthine, 8% middle fossa and 3% retrosigmoid). The relationship between the clinical, audiometric and vestibulographic characteristics and the post-operative facial nerve function were evaluated. In acoustic neuromas with cerebello-pontine component inferior to 3 cm without central neurologic signs (ic: central controlateral auditory and/or ipsilateral vestibular pathway alteration), good post-operative facial nerve function wa
