BACKGROUND: Psittacosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Chlamydia psittaci (C. psittaci). Its clinical symptoms are nonspecific, ranging from influenza-like symptoms to severe pneumonia. Thus, it is often ignored and underreported. To date, the report of C. psittaci infections detected by targeted next generation sequencing (tNGS) is still limited.
METHODS: tNGS was performed on the platform of Vision Medicals in patients with fever or respiratory infections from August 2024 to August 2025 in our hospital. The specimens included blood and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). C. psittaci infec

The growing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant infections highlights the need for antimicrobial surfaces that do not rely on conventional drug release. Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials such as graphene oxide (GO) and MXenes (Ti3C2Tx) are known to exhibit intrinsic antibacterial properties; however, when used as coatings, their efficacy is often limited by low surface reactivity, nanosheet restacking, and a lack of chemically active sites. In this work, we demonstrate that a non-thermal argon atmospheric plasma jet (Ar-APJ) provides an effective route to chemically and structurally activate G

BACKGROUND: Particulate matter (PM) exposure is a major risk factor for the progression and exacerbation of inflammatory lung diseases. Ginsenoside Rd, a bioactive compound derived from Panax ginseng, has been reported to improve lung function; however, its effects on PM2.5 (PM less than 2.5 μm in diameter)-induced pulmonary inflammation and the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear.
PURPOSE: This study investigated whether ginsenoside Rd mitigates PM2.5-induced lung inflammation and explored its molecular targets in vitro and in vivo.
METHODS: Mouse alveolar macrophages were stimul

BACKGROUND/AIM: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) are independent risk factors for respiratory disease. However, the combined impact of chronic, low-dose PM2.5 exposure and Western diet (WD)-induced metabolic dysfunction on pulmonary health remains poorly understood. We investigated whether this metabolic state exacerbates PM2.5-driven pathologies using an environmentally relevant PM2.5 dosage (~50 μg/m3).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: C57BL/6J mice were fed a WD or normal diet (ND) for 28 weeks and concurrently received intratrachea

BACKGROUND: Smoke inhalation-associated acute lung injury (SI-ALI) involves neutrophil infiltration and overproduction of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), leading to impaired respiratory function and high mortality. Citrullinated histone H3 (CitH3), a key component of NETosis, mediates inflammatory lung damage. We hypothesize that a humanized CitH3 monoclonal antibody (hCitH3-mAb) will improve respiratory function and reduce neutrophilic inflammation in a SI-ALI animal model.
STUDY DESIGN: Male Sprague-Dawley rats subjected to smoke inhalation using an established model received either

Papaya seeds are agroindustrial residues rich in bioactive compounds, lipids, and proteins. Their high moisture content makes them vulnerable to chemical and microbiological deterioration. Drying is a practical process to extend shelf life. The immersion in ethanol can be used as a drying pretreatment for improving the final quality and reducing drying time. This study examined the effect of ethanol on drying kinetics, specific energy consumption, cell-wall thickness, quality parameters (water activity, color, phenolics, flavonoids, and antioxidant activity), oil yield, and mass-transfer mecha

Carbon monoxide (CO), a major air pollutant from vehicle emissions, industrial combustion, and indoor fuel use, poses significant environmental and public health risks. Although acute carbon monoxide poisoning (COP) is well-documented, the underlying mechanisms driving long-term pulmonary complications following CO exposure remain poorly understood. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is the standard treatment for COP, primarily for its ability to eliminate carboxyhemoglobin and reduce oxidative stress. However, its role in preventing long-term pulmonary dysfunction through the regulation of mito

Increasing air pollutants significantly contributes to climate change, requiring innovative mitigation strategies. Microalgae provide a promising solution by absorbing CO₂ and pollutants like nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), and ammonia from agricultural and industrial emissions, while also generating biomass for biofuels and animal feed. This study investigated the effects of light intensity on the growth and biochemical composition of Scenedesmus sp. AQUAMEB-57, Ankistrodesmus sp. AQUAMEB-33, and Synechococcaceae AQUAMEB-32 cultivated in photobioreactors under two batch and contin

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the storage and in-use stability of a novel synthetic lung surfactant (SLS) excipient enhanced growth (EEG) powder formulation.
SIGNIFICANCE: Aerosol delivery of surfactant formulations could address limitations of current instilled surfactant replacement therapy for neonatal respiratory distress syndrome. A stable surfactant powder formulation is essential for this approach.
METHODS: SLS-EEG powder was spray-dried from a formulation of dipalmitoyl -phosphatidylcholine (DPPC), surfactant protein B peptide mimic (B-YL), mannitol, sodium chloride, and l-leucine. Powders

Meningitis is an inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, typically caused by viral or bacterial infections. Bacterial meningitis is a medical emergency requiring prompt diagnosis and treatment, which is associated with a significant mortality rate, even with optimal care. We report the case of a previously healthy 57-year-old man who presented to the emergency department with a three-week history of fever, dry cough, myalgia, fatigue, weakness, anorexia, and excessive sweating. Physical examination revealed a tympanic temperature of 38.9ºC, leukocytosis

BACKGROUND: Distinguishing multiple primary lung adenocarcinomas (MPLAs) from intrapulmonary metastases (IPMs) is essential for accurate staging and treatment planning. However, existing histologic and molecular criteria remain limited in diagnostic accuracy. Spread through air spaces (STAS) has been recognized as a marker of tumor aggressiveness, but its role in differentiating MPLA from IPM remains unclear. This study aimed to assess whether STAS can serve as a supportive marker to differentiate IPM from MPLA under both histologic and molecular frameworks.
METHODS: We retrospectively enroll

BACKGROUND: Due to low numbers of active infections and persons presenting to health facilities for malaria treatment, case-based surveillance is inefficient for understanding the remaining disease burden in low malaria transmission settings. Serological data through the detection of IgG antibodies from previous malaria parasite exposure can fill this gap by providing a nuanced picture of where sustained transmission remains. Study enrollment at sites of gathering provides a potential approach to spatially estimate malaria exposure and could preclude the need for more intensive community-based

OBJECTIVES: Litchi chinensis (Sonn.), belonging to the Sapindaceae family, has historically been used for the treatment of gastrointestinal ailments, including ulcers, gastritis, diarrhea, and infections. Plants in the Sapindaceae family have demonstrated potential anthelmintic effects, while the efficacy of L. chinensis remains barely investigated. L. chinensis seeds are often discarded as waste; however, utilizing these seeds promotes sustainable practices and may provide a natural alternative to conventional anthelmintics. The study aims to investigate the qualitative phytochemicals and eva

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) remains a major international public health concern. However, disease treatment is limited to preventive care with monoclonal antibodies and supportive care. In this study, natural products were screened to identify novel anti-RSV inhibitors.
METHODS: The antiviral effect of 320 compounds on RSV in HEp-2 cells was tested using a Cytopathic effect (CPE) inhibition assay. The antiviral effect of fumarprotocetraric acid (FUM) and geraniin (GE) were confirmed by Real-time reverse transcription quantitative PCR (Real-time RT-PCR), plaque reduction te

Maternal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is associated with adverse pregnancy and neonatal health outcomes. To explore the mechanism, we performed mRNA sequencing of neonatal cord blood. From an ongoing prospective cohort, Air Pollution on Pregnancy Outcome (APPO) study, 454 pregnant women from six centers between January 2021 and June 2022 were recruited. Individual PM2.5 exposure was calculated using a time-weighted average model. In the APPO study, age-matched cord blood samples from the High PM2.5 (˃15 ug/m3; n = 10) and Low PM2.5 (≤ 15 ug/m3; n = 30) groups were randomly selec

The use of E-cigarettes, often considered a safer alternative to traditional smoking, has been associated with high rates of cellular toxicity, genetic alterations, and inflammation. Neuroinflammatory impacts of cigarette smoking during pregnancy have been associated with increased risks of adverse childhood health outcomes; however, it is still relatively unknown if the same propensity is conferred on offspring by maternal vaping during gestation. Results from our previous mouse inhalation studies suggest such a connection. In this earlier study, pregnant C57BL/6 mice were exposed daily to in

BACKGROUND: PM2.5 is a well-known harmful air pollutant that can lead to acute exacerbation and aggravation of respiratory diseases. Although ferroptosis is involves in the pathological process of pulmonary disease, the potential mechanism of ferroptosis in PM2.5-caused lung inflammation and fibrosis need to be further clarified. Quercetin is a phenolic compound that can inhibit ferroptosis in various diseases. Hence, this study explores the role of ferroptosis in lung injury induced by PM2.5 in order to further elucidate the beneficial effect of quercetin and its underlying mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Cardiogenic shock and arrest present as critical, life-threatening emergencies characterized by severely compromised tissue perfusion and inadequate oxygen supply. Veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) serves as a mechanical support system for patients suffering shock refractory to conventional resuscitation. Despite the utilization of VA-ECMO, clinical deterioration due to systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) resulting from the underlying shock and exposure of blood cells to the artificial surfaces of the ECMO circuit may occur. To address this issu

This project investigated glial-based lymphatic (glymphatic) function and its role in a murine model of decompression sickness (DCS). DCS pathophysiology is traditionally viewed as being related to gas bubble formation from insoluble gas on decompression. However, a body of work implicates a role for a subset of inflammatory extracellular vesicles, 0.1 to 1 µm microparticles (MPs) that are elevated in human and rodent models in response to high gas pressure and rise further after decompression. Herein, we describe immunohistochemical and Western blot evidence showing that following high air pr

Zinc- and copper-containing welding fumes typically induce a systemic inflammation indicated by increase in C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, also known as welding fume fever. It typically includes symptoms like fever, myalgia or headaches, but only a quarter of patients experience respiratory symptoms, e.g. coughing. This retrospective analysis of data of three studies with either control (filtered air) or zinc- and copper-containing welding fume exposure aims to identify and characterize the effect of the welding fumes on lung function. Spirometry and body plethysmography data of male healthy
