Incorporating nanofibers into 3D-printed scaffolds is an effective strategy to enhance the physicochemical properties and osteogenic bioactivity of bone tissue engineering constructs. In this study, we developed a composite scaffold featuring a dual-nanofiber interpenetrating network composed of silica (SiO2) and poly(L-lactic acid)/gelatin (PLLA/GEL) nanofibers. SiO2 nanofibers were employed to reinforce mechanical properties and release bioactive Si elements, establishing a favorable osteogenic microenvironment. Concurrently, PLLA/GEL nanofibers were chemically crosslinked with the sodium al

Hydrogels hold significant potential for soft robotics and biomedical applications due to their high-water content, tissue-like softness, and biocompatibility, yet their practical utility remains limited by poor fatigue resistance during long-term dynamic loading. Here, we present a twisting strategy that enhances hydrogel materials' mechanical durability through bioinspired torsion methodology, enabling efficient load transfer and energy dissipation. The resulting fibers exhibit improved tensile strength, stretchability, and unprecedented fatigue thresholds while maintaining structural integr

Protection of fragile blueberry from mechanical damage and fungal contamination through active packaging is essential for extending their shelf life. This study developed a dual-functional porous hydrogel from soy protein isolate (SPI) and sodium alginate (SA) incorporated with Litsea cubeba essential oil nanoemulsions (LCEONs) for blueberries postharvest preservation. Results demonstrated that the prepared LCEON-4% was chosen for hydrogel incorporation due to optimal droplet size, uniform distribution, stability and encapsulation efficiency, and the resulting SPI/SA-LCEON composite porous hyd

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often described as "forever chemicals," continue to challenge water treatment technologies because of their exceptional chemical stability, tendency to accumulate in the environment, and resistance to conventional remediation processes. In recent years, naturally derived polysaccharides, such as cellulose, chitosan, starch, alginate, and cyclodextrins, have gained increasing attention as sustainable materials for PFAS removal. Beyond their environmental compatibility, these materials offer structural flexibility that allows PFAS to be captured throug

Animal glue stains are commonly found in manuscripts, and their removal is a delicate process that requires selective treatment to avoid damaging the fragile cellulose fibers. Therefore, this study developed a novel hybrid double network hydrogel (HDNH) consisting of synthetic polymer (Polyacrylamide), natural polymers (Agarose or sodium alginate), and Zinc Oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) for removing animal glue stains from paper manuscripts. The cleaning mechanism relies on the capillary HDNH to draw the aged animal glue into the gel matrix. To establish the suitability of this HDNH as a paper-

The rapid escalation of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has rendered many conventional antibiotics ineffective, emphasizing the need for alternative therapeutic approaches. Probiotics have emerged as promising biotherapeutic agents capable of inhibiting multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens through diverse mechanisms, including secretion of antimicrobial metabolites (bacteriocins, organic acids, short-chain fatty acids, and hydrogen peroxide), competitive exclusion, quorum-sensing interference, and immune modulation. However, their clinical application is limited by poor stability under environme

Wounds are vulnerable to microbial infiltration, leading to severe infections; to address this, we developed an antimicrobial wound dressing with prolonged residence time and controlled drug release. The study focused on the synthesis and characterization of oxidized cellulose, which was subsequently used to develop a vancomycin-loaded oxidized cellulose‑sodium alginate wound dressing crosslinked with calcium chloride. The optimized film showed a folding endurance of 257.33 ± 1.52, a swelling index of 133.40 ± 1.32%, and tensile strength of 0.66 ± 0.09 N/mm2. Its porosity of 66.67 ± 1.23% and

Plant developmental biology lacks cell-based experimental systems comparable to the organoids and live-imaging platforms that have transformed mechanistic discovery in animal research. To address this gap, we present a robust, trackable protoplast regeneration platform in Arabidopsis thaliana that enables high-resolution, time-resolved analysis from the single-cell stage through microcolony formation and early regenerative development. Protoplasts are embedded in thin alginate matrices containing fluorescent fiducial beads, maintaining physical separation and allowing repeated return to the sa

The structure-dependent interactions between proteins and polysaccharides are crucial for designing functional nanocomposites, yet the underlying mechanisms governing nanostructure formation under pH-shift remain underexplored. This study innovatively proposed that the controllable alkaline dissociation characteristics of anionic polysaccharides (sodium alginate (SA), κ-carrageenan (CS), pectin (PE)) were the core to regulate the structure and function of soy β-conglycinin (7S)-polysaccharide nanocomposites via a green pH-shift method. SA, with moderate charge density and alkali-induced chain

The land plant sporangium is unique in its ability to initiate differentiation of the reproductive germ line, leading directly to meiosis and the formation of eggs and sperm; but our lack of understanding of the processes underlying gametogenesis in plants remains a major obstacle in our ability to modify the sexual cycle for the benefit of crop science. Here we report an initial attempt to create an engineered structure which, with further development, could reproduce the physical and mechanical properties of the land plant sporangium. While the work reported here does not achieve the ultimat

A composite hydrogel bio-ink designated CuraGel was developed for extrusion-based 3D bioprinting of bone tissue engineering scaffolds. The formulation comprised gelatin (3% w/v), guar gum (1% w/v), sodium alginate (4% w/v), and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP; 1% w/v) in 10 mL distilled water. Guar gum was incorporated as a rheological modifier to enhance viscosity, shape fidelity, and water retention during the printing process. Post-printing ionic crosslinking in 2% calcium chloride (CaCl2) for 3 min yielded structurally stable scaffolds with well-defined porous architectures. Swelling kinetic

INTRODUCTION: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been studied as potential therapeutic agents for various diseases. However, their widespread application has been limited, in part, due to the concern for tumorigenic transformation and lack of longevity in host environments secondary to immune-mediated destruction. Therefore, we set out to study an MSC encapsulation and delivery method with potential application in the treatment of intestinal ischemic diseases.
METHOD: Human vertebra bone adherent mesenchymal stem cells (vBA-MSCs) were encapsulated in an alginate-derived Thread Reinforced Enca

Severe burn injuries represent a major global healthcare burden, with high costs and prolonged hospitalizations. Current treatments, including autologous skin grafting, are limited by donor availability, while allografts carry risks of immune rejection. Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) offer a promising alternative for skin substitution. We evaluated the efficacy of ARTSkin, an alginate-modified bacterial nanocellulose-based ATMP, in a murine model of third-degree burns. ARTSkin was manufactured under good manufacturing practice (GMP) conditions in two formulations: an acellular sca

Helicobacter pylori infects over half of the global population and is a major cause of gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and gastric cancer. Although antibiotic-based regimens remain the clinical standard, their efficacy is being increasingly compromised by rising antimicrobial resistance, poor gastric retention, and adverse side effects. This review explores polysaccharide-based strategies as adjunctive or alternative approaches. Sulphated polysaccharides inhibit bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation while modulating inflammatory pathways, whereas chitosan provides mucoadhesive properties.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is among the deadliest malignancies, due to late diagnosis, poor therapeutic response, and high inter- and intra-patient heterogeneity. Metabolic alterations, particularly extracellular acidification, critically impair drug response yet remain underexplored in clinical stratification. We present a sensing-integrated 3D platform that enables non-invasive time-resolved mapping of pH dynamics in patient-derived tumorspheres. Primary PDAC cells from five patients were embedded in an alginate-based matrix incorporating ratiometric optical pH sensors, allowing

Managing complex wounds characterized by multidrug-resistant bacterial infections and impaired vascularization remains a significant clinical challenge. This study describes the development of a multifunctional conductive organohydrogel (POBMG) based on a polyacrylamide/oxidized sodium alginate (PAM/OSA) network reinforced with magnesium-based metal-organic framework/black phosphorus (MgMOF/BP) hybrids. The MgMOF/BP hybrid not only protects BP from oxidative degradation but also provides superior near-infrared (NIR) photothermal conversion (56.8 °C under 808 nm irradiation), enabling rapid era
