Sink or swim? Bone density as a mechanism for buoyancy control in early cetaceans.

Previous analyses have shown that secondarily aquatic tetrapods, including whales, exhibit osteological adaptations to life in water as part of their complex buoyancy control systems. These structural specializations of bone span hyperostosis through osteoporosis. The past 15 years of paleontological effort has provided an unprecedented opportunity to examine the osteological transformation of whales as they make their transition to an obligate aquatic lifestyle over a 10-million-year period. It is hypothesized that whales manifest their osteological specialization in the same manner as extant

Babesiosis diagnosis and treatment.

Human babesiosis due to Babesia microti is an emerging malaria-like infection that is endemic in parts of the northeastern and northcentral United States. The clinical manifestations of babesiosis range from subclinical illness to fulminant disease resulting in death. Prompt and accurate diagnosis is difficult because the signs and symptoms are non-specific. A CBC is a useful screening test since anemia and thrombocytopenia are commonly observed and parasites may be visualized on blood smear. Conclusive diagnosis of this disease generally depends upon microscopic examination of thin blood smea

Sex differences in parasite infections: patterns and processes.

Sex differences in parasite infection rates, intensities, or population patterns are common in a wide range of taxa. These differences are usually attributed to 1 of 2 causes: (1) ecological (sociological in humans); and (2) physiological, usually hormonal in origin. Examples of the first cause include differential exposure to pathogens because of sex-specific behavior or morphology. The second cause may stem from the well-documented association between testosterone and the immune system; sexually mature male vertebrates are often more susceptible to infection and carry higher parasite burdens

Genetic differentiation of the G6/7 cluster of Echinococcus canadensis based on mitochondrial marker genes.

Among the genotype/species causing cystic echinococcosis, the taxonomic status of Echinococcus canadensis is only partially resolved. Within E. canadensis, four genotypes (G6, G7, G8 and G10) have been described based on short mitochondrial sequences, of which G6 and G7 (the 'camel' and the 'pig' strain, respectively) are closely related and variously regarded as microvariants of a single strain G6/7. Globally, this G6/7 cluster is the second most important agent of human cystic echinococcosis and is the predominant Echinococcus taxon in large parts of sub-Saharan Africa. To add data on the in

Prion Diseases.

Prion diseases are a group of invariably fatal and transmissible neurodegenerative disorders that are associated with the misfolding of the normal cellular prion protein, with the misfolded conformers constituting an infectious unit referred to as a "prion". Prions can spread within an affected organism by directly propagating this misfolding within and between cells and can transmit disease between animals of the same and different species. Prion diseases have a range of clinical phenotypes in humans and animals, with a principle determinant of this attributed to different conformations of th

Toxoplasma gondii rhoptry protein 38 gene: sequence variation among isolates from different hosts and geographical locations.

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular parasite that is able to infect almost all mammalian species, and may lead to toxoplasmosis of the host. In the present study, we examined sequence variation in rhoptry protein 38 (ROP38) genes among T. gondii isolates collected from different hosts and geographical regions. The complete ROP38 gene from 13 T. gondii isolates was amplified and sequenced. The results of sequence alignments showed that the lengths of the entire ROP38 gene ranged from 2646 to 2650 bp, with a sequence variation of 0.2-1.1%, among the 13 T. gondii isolates. This result

Tick-borne encephalitis virus and louping-ill virus may co-circulate in Southern Norway.

The European subtype of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV-Eu) and louping-ill virus (LIV) are two closely related tick-borne flaviviruses. However, whereas the first is the cause of one of Europe's most important zoonoses, the latter most often only causes disease in sheep and grouse. TBEV-Eu is typically found in the forests of central and northeastern Europe, and LIV typically is found in sheep pastures in the British Isles. In the 1980s, however, LIV was isolated from sheep with encephalomyelitis in Norway. In the 1990s, the first cases of human TBEV were also detected in this country, bu

The effect of host movement on viral transmission dynamics in a vector-borne disease system.

Many vector-borne pathogens whose primary vectors are generalists, such as Ixodid ticks, can infect a wide range of host species and are often zoonotic. Understanding their transmission dynamics is important for the development of disease management programmes. Models exist to describe the transmission dynamics of such diseases, but are necessarily simplistic and generally limited by knowledge of vector population dynamics. They are typically deterministic SIR-type models, which predict disease dynamics in a single, non-spatial, closed patch. Here we explore the limitations of such a model of

Photopolymerized hydrogel carriers for live vaccine ballistic delivery.

Photopolymerized poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-crosslinked hydrogels were assessed for their ability to serve as a payload vehicle to deliver a viable bacterial vaccine (Brucella abortus strain RB51 (RB51) to bison in Yellowstone National Park) ballistically using thermoplastic degradable Biobullets. PEG modified with degradable glycolide or lactide oligomers capped with photopolymerizable methacrylate groups served to crosslink the hydrogel vaccine carrier inside commercial hydroxypropylcellulose Biobullets. Release of 1 microm diameter model fluorescent particles from hydrogels followed known

Introduction to the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies or prion diseases.

Sheep scrapie has been known for at least 200 years and was described as a transmissible disease over 100 years ago. Since then, three groups of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies or TSE diseases have been identified in humans including familial, infectious and sporadic types. The discovery of the prion protein (PrP) in the 1980s greatly accelerated knowledge of the biology and pathogenesis of TSE diseases as this protein was found to play a critical role in disease susceptibility and the TSE species-barrier and may also be a component of the infectious agent itself. Nevertheless, the n

Toxoplasma gondii: transmission, diagnosis and prevention.

Toxoplasmosis, caused by the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii, is one of the most common parasitic infections of man and other warm-blooded animals. It has been found world-wide from Alaska to Australia. Nearly one-third of humanity has been exposed to this parasite. In most adults it does not cause serious illness, but it can cause blindness and mental retardation in congenitally infected children and devastating disease in immunocompromised individuals.

Experimental evidence for genetic recombination in the opportunistic pathogen Cryptosporidium parvum.

Cryptosporidium parvum is an intracellular protozoan parasite causing intestinal malabsorption and diarrhea in humans. The infection is usually self-limiting, although persistent cryptosporidosis is observed in immunocompromised and malnourished individuals. As with other Apicomplexa, the life cycle of Cryptosporidium is thought to comprise a sexual phase, during which a motile microgamont fuses with a sessile macrogamont. The four sporozoites found within each oocyst (the infectious form excreted in the feces) are thought to be the product of a meiotic division taking place immediately follow

Diagnosis and treatment of obstructive urolithiasis in a captive Rocky Mountain wapiti (Cervus elaphus nelsoni).

A captive 5-yr-old castrated male Rocky Mountain wapiti (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) developed stranguria. Rectal palpation and physical examination indicated urethral obstruction that was subsequently relieved by urethrostomy and required only minimal aftercare. The wapiti was able to urinate freely after surgery; however, the obstruction recurred 27 mo later. Urethral catheterization relieved the second obstruction, which was caused by a large calculus composed of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate. Urolithiasis may have been associated with a diet high in calcium, and urethral obstructio

Prevalence and control of babesiosis in the Americas.

This review presents up-to-date information on the distribution and control measures of babesiosis in Latin America. Bovine babesiosis caused by Babesia bovis and B. bigemia will be emphasized. The disease is endemic in most countries and poses a serious economic burden on livestock production in the region (U.S. $1365 million/year, FAO, 1989). Of the estimated 250 million cattle in Central and South America, approximately 175 million (70%) are in tick-infested regions. Humid, tropical and subtropical areas favor development of the main vector, the one-host tick Boophilus microplus. In many re

Comparative fecal microbiome and metabolome reveal enhanced lignocellulose-degrading potential in Cervus elaphus yarkandensis.

Reed is rich in lignocellulose and is therefore challenging for many ruminants to use efficiently. The endangered Tarim red deer subspecies Cervus elaphus yarkandensis (TH) inhabits the Tarim Basin, where reed represents an important forage resource, whereas captive observations suggest that the closely related Cervus elaphus songaricus (TS) may exhibit poorer tolerance to reed-rich diets. Here, we compared fecal microbial composition, metagenomic functional potential, metagenome-assembled genome (MAG)-level carbohydrate-active enzyme (CAZyme) profiles, fecal enzymatic activities, in vitro ree

Mammals tolerate harmless human presence: Lessons from COVID-19 lockdown on Barro Colorado Island, Panamá.

Human presence in protected forests impacts wildlife, but investigating such impacts is challenging because it is rare to isolate human presence from other anthropogenic factors. The COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020 provided a quasi-natural experiment that reduced human activity on Barro Colorado Island, a tropical forest isolated from most human footprints in Panamá. We used trail-based camera trap data from mammal species to compare a lockdown period (April-July 2020) versus non-lockdown (2019). For all observed species, we tested the hypotheses that human presence impacts activity level for 14 sp
