The psychological impact of childbirth: Unscheduled cesarean delivery associates with increased risk for acute stress response.

INTRODUCTION: Cesarean delivery is one of the most common surgical procedures in the United States. Despite their frequency and medical necessity, the acute psychological response associated with unscheduled cesarean delivery is unknown. This study aimed to assess the rates and nature of peritraumatic stress reactions during and shortly after unscheduled cesarean delivery, and whether acute stress predicts later mental health symptoms. METHODS: A total of 1146 patients receiving routine perinatal care at a single tertiary, urban hospital were assessed for peritraumatic stress reactions during

Correlations between life course trauma on perinatal outcomes of women on community supervision - a retrospective cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Women on probation (community supervision) report high rates of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and ongoing trauma, yet little research has examined how trauma across the life course relates to perinatal outcomes during community supervision. This study examined associations between lifetime trauma and perinatal violence, infant separation, and postpartum mood symptoms among women who experienced pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum while on probation. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional secondary analysis from N = 60 women in South-Central Texas who had a pregnancy with

Postpartum performance of dairy heifers freshening at young ages.

Records from Florida Agricultural Experiment Station dairy herd for 1144 heifers freshening from 1959 to 1979 were studied to evaluate effects of age and problems at parturition on subsequent yield and reproduction. Statistical analysis was by method of ordinary least squares analysis of variance; five measures of reproduction, survival to second lactation, and 15 measures of yield were studied. Mean first parturition age was 25.8 mo with 40% of individuals less than or equal to 23 mo; survival to second parturition was 67%. No effects of age at first parturition were detected on survival, pos

The Effect of Socioeconomic Factors on Maternal Perinatal Depressive Symptoms and the Contribution of Group Prenatal Support as a Preventive Measure.

BACKGROUND: The European and Greek financial turmoil that began in 2007 has had adverse health consequences. Stillbirth, low birth weight, infant mortality, and maternal suicide have all increased. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether socioeconomic factors contribute to postpartum blues, and whether psychoprophylaxis with group prenatal education and support may have a beneficial effect. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample study comprised 414 pregnant women equally divided into psychoprophylaxis or standard care. There were six psychoprophylaxis sessions, with two each week lasting

Perinatal maternal mental health and offspring internalizing and externalizing difficulties from early childhood through adolescence: Rhea mother-child cohort in Crete, Greece.

Longitudinal research assessing childhood mental health is limited, particularly in terms of tracking how early-life factors influence the development of emotional and behavioral disorders over time. The present study aimed to examine the influence of both antenatal and postnatal maternal mental health on children's emotional and behavioral development, with a focus on the trajectory of internalizing, externalizing and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms from early childhood through adolescence. The present study included 434 mother-child pairs of the Rhea mother-child coh

The impact of maternal psychopathology on child-mother attachment.

This review aims to consider evidence for the impact of maternal psychopathology on the child's attachment to the mother, and the role of this in mediating the known transmission of developmental and clinical risk to children. The studies reviewed focus on mothers with depression and psychotic disorder. A number of studies (mainly of mothers with depression) demonstrate an association between insecure/disorganised infant attachments and severe maternal psychopathology, whether chronic or current, in the presence of comorbid disorder, maternal insecure or unresolved attachment state of mind, tr

Comparison of four self-report measures and a generic mood question to screen for anxiety during pregnancy in English-speaking women.

BACKGROUND: Increasingly researchers and clinicians have called for perinatal mental health depression screening to be broadened to also screen for significant levels of anxiety. This study therefore aimed to compare the screening performance during pregnancy of four self-report anxiety measures, as well as a generic mood question. METHOD: The measures tested were two measures of general anxiety (the anxiety subscales of the Edinburgh Depression Scale and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), and two measures of pregnancy specific anxiety by Huizink and colleagues, and Rini and colleagu

An incentive-based text-messaging intervention to reduce maternal alcohol use during pregnancy and lactation in South Africa (MaRISA study): Findings from a single-arm pilot study.

BACKGROUND: South Africa has the highest rate of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) globally. As with alcohol use during pregnancy, alcohol consumption while breastfeeding adversely impacts infant development. We pilot tested an incentive-based text-messaging intervention to reduce alcohol use during pregnancy and lactation in South Africa. METHODS: A single-arm pilot trial was conducted over 3 months in healthcare facilities in Cape Town, South Africa. Pregnant and breastfeeding participants tested positive for recent alcohol use by urinalysis. The three-month intervention had two compo

Obstetric patients' health-related quality of life before and after intensive care.

BACKGROUND: Intensive care admissions during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum period are relatively well investigated. However, very little is known about these obstetric patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL) before and after critical care. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess obstetric patients' HRQoL before intensive care admission (baseline) and at 6 months after discharge (follow-up) DESIGN: This was a retrospective database study. In a 5-year period, the data of all women admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) during pregnancy, delivery, or up to 42 day

Is screening for depression in the perinatal period enough? The co-occurrence of depression, substance abuse, and intimate partner violence in culturally diverse pregnant women.

BACKGROUND: The perinatal period provides unique opportunities to identify and intervene with the co-occurrence of perinatal depression, intimate partner violence (IPV), and substance use problems. Psychosocial screening recommended for women seen in maternal child health settings tends to target single rather than multiple risk factors; there is limited research examining the co-occurrence of these issues especially in racially and ethnically diverse women across the perinatal period. These analyses explore the relationships of sociodemographic, psychosocial, and behavioral characteristics in

The Protective Role of Culture: Familism, Depressive Symptoms, and Stress Among U.S. and Foreign-born Latina Mothers.

Achieving health equity for U.S. Latinas requires a better understanding of how cultural factors influence mental health, especially during life transitions. This study examined one cultural factor, familism, in relation to depressive symptoms and stress among U.S. and foreign-born Latinas during early parenting. We also tested whether associations varied by nativity. Data were drawn from a sample of 420 U.S.- and foreign-born Latina mothers participating in a large, multisite, community-based study in the US. Familism was measured at 12 months postpartum across three facets: (a) family obliga
