Vision-Language Models for Transmission Line Fault Detection: A New Approach for Grid Reliability and Optimization.

Reliable fault detection along transmission corridors is essential for preventing small defects from developing into long outages and costly emergency operations. This study aims to improve the field reliability of an open vocabulary vision language backbone without retraining the large model in an end-to-end manner. The work focuses on four operational fault classes in multi-region corridor imagery collected during routine inspections and uses a Florence-2 vision language model as the base recognizer. On top of this backbone, three domain-specific components are introduced. A subclass-aware f

Development and item selection of the language and dyslexia screening questionnaire in primary care settings.

PURPOSE: The study's purpose was to develop and select items for a caregiver-completed screening tool to assess children for dyslexia and developmental language disorder (DLD). METHOD: Participants were recruited from community centers, schools and pediatric offices. Caregivers clicked a QR code on a flyer to access the consent and questionnaire, or contacted the research assistant to access them, and completed the screening measure designed to assess the risk of DLD and dyslexia. Then, children completed a gold-standard battery that included language, reading, phonological awareness, rapid n

TongueTransUNet: toward effective tongue contour segmentation using well-managed dataset.

In modern telehealth and healthcare information systems medical image analysis is essential to understand the context of the images and its complex structure from large, inconsistent-quality, and distributed datasets. Achieving desired results faces a few challenges for deep learning. Examples of these challenges are date size, labeling, balancing, training, and feature extraction. These challenges made the AI model complex and expensive to be built and difficult to understand which made it a black box and produce hysteresis and irrelevant, illegal, and unethical output in some cases. In this

Brain repair after stroke--a novel neurological model.

Following stroke, patients are commonly left with debilitating motor and speech impairments. This article reviews the state of the art in neurological repair for stroke and proposes a new model for the future. We suggest that stroke treatment--from the time of the ictus itself to living with the consequences--must be fundamentally neurological, from limiting the extent of injury at the outset, to repairing the consequent damage. Our model links brain and behaviour by targeting brain circuits, and we illustrate the model though action observation treatment, which aims to enhance brain network c

Socioeconomic disparities in fertility treatments and associated likelihood of livebirth following in vitro fertilization.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether neighborhood-level socioeconomic characteristics are associated with the likelihood of livebirth (LB) following in vitro fertilization (IVF). Specifically, we evaluated neighborhood-level household income, unemployment rate, and educational attainment. DESIGN: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted for patients undergoing autologous IVF cycles. SETTING: Large academic health system. INTERVENTIONS: For each patient, ZIP code of residence was used as a proxy for neighborhood. Neighborhood characteristics were compared between patients with and with

MergeRepair: An Exploratory Study on Merging Task-Specific Adapters in Code LLMs for Automated Program Repair.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown high capabilities in several software development-related tasks such as program repair, documentation, code refactoring, debugging, and testing. However, training these models requires massive amount of data and significant computational resources. Adapters are specialized, small modules designed for parameter efficient fine-tuning of LLMs for specific tasks, domains, or applications without requiring extensive retraining of the entire model. These adapters offer a more efficient way to customize LLMs for particular needs, leveraging the pre-existing cap…

GaitForeMer: Self-Supervised Pre-Training of Transformers via Human Motion Forecasting for Few-Shot Gait Impairment Severity Estimation.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurological disorder that has a variety of observable motor-related symptoms such as slow movement, tremor, muscular rigidity, and impaired posture. PD is typically diagnosed by evaluating the severity of motor impairments according to scoring systems such as the Movement Disorder Society Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS). Automated severity prediction using video recordings of individuals provides a promising route for non-intrusive monitoring of motor impairments. However, the limited size of PD gait data hinders model ability and clinical po

Automatic identification of diagnosis from hospital discharge letters via weakly supervised Natural Language Processing.

Identifying patient diagnoses from hospital discharge letters is essential for large-scale cohort selection and epidemiological research, but traditional supervised approaches require extensive manual annotation, which is often impractical for large textual datasets. We present a weakly supervised Natural Language Processing (NLP) pipeline for classifying Italian discharge letters without document-level manual annotation. The method extracts diagnosis-related sentences, generates semantic embeddings using a transformer model further pre-trained on Italian medical documents, and applies a two-l

International Sex Survey: Study protocol of a large, cross-cultural collaborative study in 45 countries.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Limitations of research into sexuality and compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) include the use of simplistic methodological designs and the absence of quality and unified measurements, empirically supported theoretical models, and large, collaborative studies between laboratories. We aim to fill these gaps with the International Sex Survey (ISS, http://internationalsexsurvey.org/). METHODS: The ISS is a large-scale, international, multi-lab, multi-language study using cross-sectional survey methods, involving more than 40 countries. Participants responding to adver

Ophtimus-V2-Tx: a compact domain-specific LLM for ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment planning.

Large language models (LLMs) show promise for clinical decision support but often struggle with case-specific reasoning. We present Ophtimus-V2-Tx, an 8-billion-parameter ophthalmology-specialized LLM fine-tuned on more than 10,000 case reports. Evaluation is conducted on a pre-collected dataset. Alongside text metrics (ROUGE-L, BLEU, METEOR) and a semantic similarity score, we use CliBench to map outputs to standardized codes (ICD-10-CM, ATC, ICD-10-PCS) and compute hierarchical F1 (L1-L4 and Full), with code mapping used strictly as an evaluation tool. Ophtimus-V2-Tx is competitive with a st…

A study of ChatGPT in facilitating Heart Team decisions on severe aortic stenosis.

BACKGROUND: Multidisciplinary Heart Teams (HTs) play a central role in the management of valvular heart diseases. However, the comprehensive evaluation of patients' data can be hindered by logistical challenges, which in turn may affect the care they receive. AIMS: This study aimed to explore the ability of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly large language models (LLMs), to improve clinical decision-making and enhance the efficiency of HTs. METHODS: Data from patients with severe aortic stenosis presented at HT meetings were retrospectively analysed. A standardised multiple-choice qu…

Neuroimaging study designs, computational analyses and data provenance using the LONI pipeline.

Modern computational neuroscience employs diverse software tools and multidisciplinary expertise to analyze heterogeneous brain data. The classical problems of gathering meaningful data, fitting specific models, and discovering appropriate analysis and visualization tools give way to a new class of computational challenges--management of large and incongruous data, integration and interoperability of computational resources, and data provenance. We designed, implemented and validated a new paradigm for addressing these challenges in the neuroimaging field. Our solution is based on the LONI Pip

Medical Referring Image Segmentation via Next-Token Mask Prediction.

Medical Referring Image Segmentation (MRIS) involves segmenting target regions in medical images based on natural language descriptions. While achieving promising results, recent approaches usually involve complex design of multimodal fusion or multi-stage decoders. In this work, we propose NTP-MRISeg, a novel framework that reformulates MRIS as an autoregressive next-token prediction task over a unified multimodal sequence of tokenized image, text, and mask representations. This formulation streamlines model design by eliminating the need for modality-specific fusion and external segmentation
