This disease was first described by von Recklinghausen and Festscher and has been known as the von Recklinghausen's disease or neurofibromatosis (NF). Numerous articles have been published on this subject where majority of the authors have stressed their difficulty in achieving favourable surgical results. This disease is pathologically accepted to be of neuroectodermal origin with a positive family history in approximately 50% of the cases, autosomal dominant trait and is known to involve the periorbital regions, orbit (preoperative CT scan: upper left and right photographs), temporal region …

Thirty-six patients with a peripheral localized nerve lesion (18 of median nerve, 7 of ulnar nerve, 2 of radial nerve, 1 of lateral cutaneous brachii nerve, 1 of sciatic nerve, 5 of peroneal nerve and 2 of tibial nerve), were evaluated by Computed Tomography (CT). We used a high resolution scanner (Siemens Somatom CR) and we performed 2mm thickness slices. Sagittal and coronal reconstructed images were obtained too. Thirty-two out of 36 patients underwent surgery. CT scan was useful in all cases in defining the relationship between nerve lesions and surrounding tissues and in planning surgical

A retrospective study of 70 consecutive patients with a cauda equina tumour who were admitted to Neurosurgical Department at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford is presented. The diagnosis of these tumours is often difficult and delayed. The quality of life largely depends upon the neurological disability at presentation. The diagnostic features and investigations are discussed together with the treatment and prognosis.

Seventy-four pediatric patients with parotid gland tumors were seen during a 52-year period. Seventy percent of the lesions were benign and 30% were malignant. When the primary treatment is either subtotal or total parotidectomy, the recurrence rate was 2.3%. The facial nerve should be dissected free of parotid parenchyma and preserved, except if the lesion was malignant--a situation in which the nerve might have to be sacrificed totally or in part to ensure adequate tumor removal. No patient died of a benign or malignant lesion in this series, and the morbidity after surgical removal of prima

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic tumor predisposition syndrome characterized by a substantial risk of developing peripheral nerve sheath tumors, including malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs), which occur in 8-13% of patients. Approximately 50% arise from plexiform neurofibromas (PNs) and 40% develop de novo, making them a major cause of premature mortality. Current clinical management is limited by the intrinsic shortcomings of standard imaging modalities: magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), and tissue biopsy …

BACKGROUND: Repairing large forehead defects presents significant challenges due to the risk of asymmetry, inconsistent skin color, texture, thickness, or scarring. This study aimed to introduce a method utilizing preexpanded brachial artery perforator (BAP) flaps to reconstruct large forehead defects.
METHODS: A retrospective case series was conducted on 17 patients who underwent forehead reconstruction using preexpanded BAP flaps between 2012 and 2024. The etiologies included nevus, scars, neurofibromas, and wounds with titanium mesh exposure. The surgery was performed in 3 stages. An expan…

Intradural disk herniation (IDH) refers to the protrusion of the nucleus pulposus into the dural sac. While disk herniation is a relatively frequent condition, the intradural variant is exceptionally rare. Patients diagnosed with IDH often exhibit more pronounced clinical symptoms compared to those with extradural herniations. Establishing a definitive preoperative diagnosis remains challenging, as the pathophysiology and radiological features are not yet fully understood. Differentiating IDH from other intradural extramedullary pathologies, including schwannomas, neurofibromas, meningiomas, o…

INTRODUCTION: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF type 1) is an autosomal dominant disease with typical clinical manifestations, such as skin lesions, Lisch nodules, optic pathway gliomas, and neurofibromas, caused by the mutation of the NF1 gene. Visual evoked potentials (VEP) present a measure of the electrophysiological response of visual cortex to a visual stimulus. The role of VEP in the pathophysiology of NF type 1 is very complex and requires additional research.
THE AIM: We examined the differences between NF type 1 patients with normal and altered VEP and analyzed the correlation between th…

The dysregulation of microRNAs (miRNAs) is a crucial molecular signature of disease development. The potential implication of miRNAs in neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) remains poorly investigated. The expression levels of miR-27a-3p, miR-27b-3p, and neurofibromin 1 (NF1) were detected by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) analysis. The functional roles of miR-27a-3p and miR-27b-3p in NF1 were explored by CCK8 (Cell Counting Kit-8), 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU), terminal deoxynucleoitidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL), and transwell assays. Luciferase repo…

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant disease that predisposes individuals to developing benign neurofibromas and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST). The mechanism of NF1-tumorigenesis or the curatives have not been established. Using unique trascriptome and proteome integration method, iPEACH (1), we previously identified translationally controlled tumor protein (TCTP) as a novel biological target for NF1-associated tumors (2). Here, we identified specific TCTP-interacting proteins by sequential affinity purification and data-independent mass spectrometry acqui…

The neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is characterized by specific cutaneous features (neurofibromas, "café-au-lait" spots of the skin) and alterations of several tissue (nervous, vascular) and bone deformities, such as scoliosis, congenital pseudoarthrosis and bone dysplasia of tibia. Moreover, several studies have shown systemic involvement of bone tissue in NF1 patients, leading to reduced bone mass. The aim of our study was to evaluate some bone mineral metabolism parameters before and after calcium and vitamin D supplementation in NF1 patients. We evaluated in 70 NF1 consecutive patients the…
