Clinicopathological Findings of Haematological Malignancies in Hospital Admitted Patients.

The global burden of cancer is gradually rising. In our context we are also facing the same problem. Hematological malignancies (HMs) are important component of cancer. Early diagnosis and proper treatment at right time, a good number of HMs patients can be cured or lengthening the survival period. For this purpose a proper diagnostic criteria should be developed in our settings. This research work is carried out to find out the clinicopathological findings of HMs in our population. This was a cross-sectional descriptive type of observational study conducted in the Department of Medicine and H

SMARCA4-deficient Thoracic Sarcomas: Clinicopathologic Study of 30 Cases With an Emphasis on Their Nosology and Differential Diagnoses.

SMARCA4-deficient thoracic sarcoma (SMARCA4-DTS) is a recently described entity with an aggressive clinical course and specific genetic alterations of the BAF chromatin remodeling complex. In the present study, we reviewed the clinical and pathologic features of 30 cases of SMARCA4-DTS, discussed its main differential diagnoses and the challenging diagnostic scenarios that the average pathologist may face. In addition, we tested the specificity of the "SMARCA4-DTS immunohistochemical signature" (co-loss of SMARCA4 and SMARCA2 with overexpression of SOX2) in a large cohort of intrathoracic mali

Oral cancer. The importance of early diagnosis and treatment.

Oral cancer is an important health issue. The WHO predicts a continuing worldwide increase in the number of patients with oral cancer, extending this trend well into the next several decades. In the US the projected number of new cases of oral and oropharyngeal cancer will exceed 31,000 per year. Mortality due to cancers in this region exceeds the annual death rate is the US caused by either cutaneous melanoma or cervical cancer. Significant agents involved in the etiology of oral cancer in Western countries include sunlight exposure, smoking and alcohol consumption. Use of the areca or betel

Mechanistic examination of walnuts in prevention of breast cancer.

Walnuts contain bioactive molecules that may contribute to their beneficial effects, including alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and phytosterols. In these studies, extracts of walnut, purified compounds, or postprandial serum were examined for effects on breast cancer cell proliferation and gene expression. Extracts derived from walnut oil decreased proliferation of MCF-7 cells, as did ALA and β-sitosterol. The gene expression response of ALA in the mouse breast cancer cell line TM2H indicates this molecule has multiple cellular targets with peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) target g

JNK inhibition as a potential strategy in treating Parkinson's disease.

Mid-19th century European visitors to Old Calabar, an eastern province of Nigeria, could not avoid becoming aware of native belief in the power of the seeds of a local plant to determine whether individuals were innocent or guilty of some serious misdemeanour. The seeds were those of a previously unknown legume and soon referred to as the ordeal bean of Old Calabar. Their administration was known locally as 'chop nut'. Missionaries who arrived in Calabar in 1846 estimated that chop nut caused some 120 deaths annually and documented the course of poisoning. The latter information and samples of

Language barriers are associated with worse outcomes in pediatric foreign body aspiration: A national cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Foreign body aspiration (FBA) is a serious and potentially life-threatening pediatric emergency. When promptly diagnosed and managed, outcomes are usually favorable, but delayed recognition can result in pneumonia, acute respiratory distress and even death. Prior studies show that language barriers and limited English proficiency (LEP) are associated with delayed diagnosis, increased risk of high-severity aspirations (e.g., nuts), and disparities in perioperative and emergency care. However, few investigations have directly examined the relationship between language barriers and

Development and validation of a modified Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (mDASH) index in the community-based Framingham Heart Study Second Generation cohort.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) intervention was developed in the 1990s to study blood pressure-lowering effects of a diet high in potassium, calcium, and magnesium, as well as fiber and protein. Various DASH Indices were developed in the 2000s to study the health effects of such a DASH eating pattern in observational studies. Here, we propose a modified DASH Index (mDASH) incorporating relevant updated evidence. We evaluated the reliability and validity of the new index and its ability to predict hypertension (HTN) risk in the prospective Framingham Heart

Development of a novel digestion chamber for human and porcine islet isolation.

BACKGROUND: The current technique of human pancreas digestion for islet isolation relies on selective distribution of collagenase delivered via the pancreatic duct to produce digestion and removal of peri-acinar fibrous tissue. However, the collagenase has relatively little effect on the interlobular fibrous tissue, which must therefore be broken down by mechanical means within the digestion chamber so as to release the contained acini and islets. The current way of achieving this in the Ricordi chamber is to place five or six stainless steel balls within the chamber and shake vigorously. The

Effectiveness of a capacity-building training for knowledge and practices of tobacco control and oral cancer prevention: a pre-post study from rural northern India.

BACKGROUND: Smokeless tobacco products and areca nut, widely used in Uttar Pradesh, are strongly associated with oral cancer, which ranks among the top three cancers in India. Data from the Population-Based Cancer Registry, Varanasi, highlights one of the highest oral cancer burdens across India. Despite the availability of national guidelines, frontline health workers (ASHAs) remain underutilised for tobacco cessation counselling and oral cancer symptom-based screening. This study assessed the impact of a structured training intervention on their knowledge, practices, and legal awareness. ME

Spatial profiling of tissue-resident memory T cells reveals stromal IL-15 niches and a paradoxical CD103⁺ phenotype predicting survival in oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a major malignancy in South Asia, driven by betel nut/tobacco use, with 5-year survival near 50-60% and frequent recurrences reflecting its aggressive biology. Although tissue resident memory (TRM) T cells mediate innate immunity, their spatial organization and associated regulatory role of cytokine, interleukin-15 (IL-15) in the OSCC tissues and their microenvironment remain unclear. This study aimed to map CD4⁺ and CD8⁺ T lymphocytes, and TRM markers (CD103, CD49a, CD69) across tumor and stromal compartments, to assess the regulatory role of IL-15 and CD

Walnut consumption improves mood and is associated with increased urinary excretion of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid and urolithins in a randomized crossover trial.

Background & aims: Walnuts are nutrient-dense foods rich in bioactive compounds that may support mental health. However, evidence linking walnut consumption to mood regulation and to changes in urinary metabolites potentially associated with these effects in humans remains limited. This randomized crossover trial (RCT) aimed to evaluate the effects of an 8-week walnut (Juglans regia) intervention on mood states in young adults and to explore the potential mechanistic links through urinary serotonin metabolite (5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, 5-HIAA), cortisol, and urolithins. Methods: In this 18-w

Dose-Response Effects of Pecan Consumption on Blood Lipid Profiles in Adults with Excess Body Weight and/or Dyslipidemia: a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Consuming ≥20% of daily energy from pecans improves blood lipids and reduces dyslipidemia but exceeds dietary recommendations. The benefits of lower doses remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the effects of pecan consumption at doses of 6%, 13%, and 20% of total energy needs on fasting and postprandial blood lipids in adults with excess body weight and/or dyslipidemia, compared with the control (CON). We hypothesized a dose-response relationship, with the 20% group showing the greatest lipid improvements, followed by 13% and 6%, and all would be better than the

Enhanced fixation in sacral fragility fractures: the role of the transsacral bar in preventing screw loosening.

PURPOSE: Mechanical failure after minimally invasive posterior pelvic fixation remains a major challenge in elderly patients with sacral fragility fractures (SFF), particularly in the presence of severe osteoporosis. Multiple bilateral fixation strategies are currently used, yet their relative mechanical reliability remains poorly understood. This study compared four commonly applied bilateral constructs, with a specific focus on the biomechanical behavior of the transsacral bar (TSB). METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted including 164 patients aged ≥ 60 years who underwent min

Skin-analogue primary poroid neoplasms of the head and neck with YAP1/WWTR1::MAML2/NUTM1 fusions: clinicopathologic and genetic spectrum of a novel tumor family delineated in a series of 10 cases.

Porocarcinoma is a rare type of aggressive skin adnexal carcinoma with terminal sweat duct differentiation, representing the malignant counterpart of the more common benign eccrine poroma. Diagnosis is based on distinctive morphology, supplemented by immunohistochemistry. While all tumors display a squamous immunophenotype, porocarcinomas only infrequently show frankly squamous cell cytology (squamous variant). Most poromas and porocarcinomas harbor YAP1::MAML2/NUTM1 or, rarely, WWTR1::NUTM1 fusions. We herein describe 10 extra-cutaneous primary (8 salivary, 1 mandibular, 1 nasopharyngeal) por
