Biohybrid tongue based on hypothalamic neuronal network-on-a-chip for real-time blood glucose sensing and assessment.

The expression of sweet receptors in the hypothalamus has been implicated in energy homeostasis control and the pathogenesis of obesity and diabetes. However, the exact mechanism by which hypothalamic glucose-sensing neurons function remains unclear. Conventional detection methods, such as fiber photometry, optogenetics, brain-machine interfaces, patch clamp and calcium imaging, pose limitations for real-time glucose perception due to their complexity, cytotoxicity and so on. Therefore, this study proposes a biohybrid tongue based on hypothalamic neuronal network (HNN)-on-a-chip coupling with

Mandibular jaw movements as a non-invasive measure of respiratory effort during sleep: application in clinical practice.

Assessment of respiratory effort (RE) is key for characterization of respiratory events. The discrimination between central and obstructive events is important because these events are caused by different physio-pathological mechanisms and require different treatment approaches. Many of the currently available options for home sleep apnea testing either do not measure RE, or RE signal recording is not always reliable. This is due to a variety of factors, including for instance wrong placement of the respiratory inductance plethysmography (RIP) sensors leading to artifacts or signal loss. Monit

Gaussian discriminative component analysis for early detection of Alzheimer's disease: A supervised dimensionality reduction algorithm.

BACKGROUND: Using multiple modalities of biomarkers, several machine leaning-based approaches have been proposed to characterize patterns of structural, functional and metabolic differences discernible from multimodal neuroimaging data for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Current investigations report several studies using binary classification often augmented with local feature selection methods, while fewer other studies address the challenging problem of multiclass classification. NEW METHOD: To assess the merits of each of these research directions, this study introduces a supervised Gaussian di

Hybrid semantic-lexical framework for ambiguity detection in software requirements using TF-IDF, character n-grams, and SBERT.

Ambiguity in software requirements is a major cause of misinterpretation, design defects, rework, and project delays in software engineering. This study proposes a hybrid semantic-lexical ambiguity detection framework that integrates lexical, structural, and contextual representations for identifying ambiguous software requirement statements. Two benchmark datasets were employed, including a Software Requirements Specification (SRS) dataset and a Functional-Non-Functional Requirements (FR-NFR) dataset. Data pre-processing involved tokenisation, lemmatisation, and noise removal, while Synthetic

Functional magnetic resonance imaging in neuropathic pain: a bibliometric analysis incorporating machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Neuropathic pain (NP) affects 6.9%-10% of the global population. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has become central to NP investigation, yet few studies have systematically mapped this literature. We used bibliometric and machine-learning methods to chart the fMRI-NP research landscape. METHODS: We retrieved 1,866 fMRI-NP articles (2005-2025) from Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus. Following PRISMA guidelines, we analyzed publication trends, citation metrics, and collaborative networks with CiteSpace and VOSviewer, complemented by exploratory topic modeling based on

Physics-constrained interpretable baseline modelling of wastewater lift-pump energy efficiency and its engineering validation.

Influent lift pumps in wastewater treatment plants operate under variable hydraulic conditions, while raw supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) records commonly contain transients, asynchronous sensor responses and physically inconsistent measurements, complicating pump-specific energy-performance assessment. This study developed a physics-constrained and interpretable baseline-modelling framework using 1-min SCADA data from a full-scale urban wastewater treatment plant. Steady-state extraction, electrical self-consistency screening, an affinity-informed frequency-power baseline and

Hybrid Unsupervised-Supervised Learning Framework for Rainfall Prediction Using Satellite Signal Strength Attenuation.

Satellite communication systems experience significant signal degradation during rain events, a phenomenon that can be leveraged for meteorological applications. This study introduces a novel hybrid machine learning framework combining unsupervised clustering with cluster-specific supervised deep learning models to transform satellite signal attenuation into a predictive tool for rainfall prediction. Unlike conventional single-model approaches treating all atmospheric conditions uniformly, our methodology employs K-Means Clustering with the Elbow Method to identify four distinct atmospheric re

Predictive modelling of fine-mode combustion aerosol events near Indonesian coal-fired power plants using AE-filtered Himawari-8 satellite data.

This study develops a predictive framework to identify fine-mode combustion aerosol events around coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) in Java, Indonesia, using Himawari-8 satellite data filtered using the Ångström Exponent (AE). Although an AE > 1.2 indicates fine-mode particles characteristic of combustion processes (including biomass combustion, traffic, and industrial emissions), the persistent nature of CFPP operations allows for the characterization of aerosol signals in their vicinity. Analysis of 41,119 daily observations (2015-2025) across 13 major CFPPs reveals that 8.52% of days meet the

Cross-regional radiomics: a novel framework for relationship-based feature extraction with validation in Parkinson's disease motor subtyping.

Traditional radiomics approaches focus on single-region feature extraction, limiting their ability to capture complex inter-regional relationships crucial for understanding pathophysiological mechanisms in complex diseases. This study introduces a novel cross-regional radiomics framework that systematically extracts relationship-based features between anatomically and functionally connected brain regions. We analyzed T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from 140 early-stage Parkinson's disease patients (70 tremor-dominant, 70 postural instability gait difficulty) from the Parkinso

Epileptic network identification: insights from dynamic mode decomposition of sEEG data.

Objective. For medically-refractory epilepsy patients, stereoelectroencephalography (sEEG) is a surgical method using intracranial electrode recordings to identify brain networks participating in early seizure organization and propagation (i.e. the epileptogenic zone, EZ). If identified, surgical EZ treatment via resection, ablation or neuromodulation can lead to seizure-freedom. To date, quantification of sEEG data, including its visualization and interpretation, remains a clinical and computational challenge. Given elusiveness of physical laws or governing equations modelling complex brain dy

CViewer: a Java-based statistical framework for integration of shotgun metagenomics with other omics datasets.

BACKGROUND: Shotgun metagenomics for microbial community survey recovers enormous amount of information for microbial genomes that include their abundances, taxonomic, and phylogenetic information, as well as their genomic makeup, the latter of which then helps retrieve their function based on annotated gene products, mRNA, protein, and metabolites. Within the context of a specific hypothesis, additional modalities are often included, to give host-microbiome interaction. For example, in human-associated microbiome projects, it has become increasingly common to include host immunology through f

A qualitative study on diverse experiences of medication safety among foreign-born persons living in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: The ongoing global migration has led to multicultural societies, with many migrants who do not speak the official language in the host country. This could contribute to communication problems with staff in healthcare and a risk to patient safety. Research on patient safety in medication use in migrants is an under-researched area. The aim was to explore diverse foreign-born people's experiences and perceptions of self-management of medication and determine if home-based practice patterns have implications on medication safety, and what factors may support safe medication use.
