Preliminary study on determining stereotypical motor movements.

Stereotypical motor movements are one of the most common and least understood behaviors occurring in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). To overcome problems with traditional methods for measuring stereotypical motor movements in persons with ASD, the Kinect sensor from Microsoft and gesture recognition algorithms were used to automatically detect hand flapping. This study provides a valuable tool to monitor stereotypes in order to understand and to cope with this problem. At the end it facilitates to identify behavioral patterns especially relevant when studying interaction skill

Managing noncompliance in a schizophrenic patient with chronic skin disorders.

A schizophrenic-diagnosed woman with a long-term history of scratching and skin problems was referred for behavioral treatment because she was not responding well to medical care and was often described as noncompliant. The treatment of noncompliance consisted of four phases: (I) direct habit modification, (II) compliance training, (III) controlling anxiety precipitants and (IV) follow-up monitoring and evaluation. After several months of treatment, the maladaptive behaviors decreased and the skin condition improved. Follow-up at six month intervals for three years indicated no recurrence of s

Unique patterns of childhood adversity and associated clinical and behavioral functioning in minority youth entering a residential program.

BACKGROUND: Youth in residential care are highly prone to childhood adversity (CA) and specific patterns of CA are uniquely associated with distinct clinical and behavioral functioning. Few studies have examined how these associations may differ in minority youth. OBJECTIVE: We explore patterns of CA in Black and Hispanic/Latinx youth entering residential care. We also examine the association between these patterns and key indicators of clinical and behavioral functioning, including emotional problems, conduct problems, hyperactivity/inattention, prosocial behavior, peer problems, and trauma

The Long-Term Effects of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure on Offspring: Insights from the ALSPAC Cohort.

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is a significant public health concern, associated with adverse developmental outcomes throughout the lifespan. The Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), a globally recognized longitudinal birth cohort, provides a robust dataset for examining the effects of PAE on physical, cognitive, and behavioral health outcomes. A structured search was conducted to identify peer-reviewed studies that utilized ALSPAC data to explore the effects of PAE. Studies were included if they satisfied the inclusion criteria (i.e., published between in English langua

The Effectiveness of a Motivational Interviewing Treatment for Help-Seeking Problem Gamblers in a Community Organization.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) has been used as an approach to enhance readiness for change and behavior modification in a range of addiction and substance use disorders. Large meta-analyses comparing MI with non-MI interventions point to mixed conclusions about the short-term and long-term effectiveness of MI, with participant, outcome, and delivery factors being important moderators. The current study aimed to assess the immediate (1-2 weeks) and long-term (18 months) effectiveness of MI when delivered at the first point of client contact at a community gambling help counselling service and

Everyday Executive Function and Self-Awareness in Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum.

OBJECTIVE: Agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC) is associated with a range of cognitive deficits, including mild to moderate problems in higher order executive functions evident in neuropsychological assessments. Previous research has also suggested a lack of self-awareness in persons with AgCC. METHOD: We investigated daily executive functioning and self-awareness in 36 individuals with AgCC by analyzing self-ratings on the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult Version (BRIEF-A), as well as ratings on the same instrument from close relatives. Discrepancies between self- and

The Role of Informal Mentors in Promoting Resilience of Latino/a Late Adolescents and Emerging Adults.

This study examined the compensatory and risk-protective roles of informal mentoring in the longitudinal associations between discrimination and behavioral health problems among Latino/a adolescents and emerging adults. The study addressed the limited research on mentoring among Latino/a youth, particularly with regard to behavioral health, and considered both the presence of and relationship quality with mentors as well as gender differences (girls vs. boys). Latent growth curve analysis was used to investigate trajectories of internalizing and externalizing problems across 11 observations sp

The relationship between antiepileptic drug load and challenging behaviors in older adults with intellectual disability and epilepsy.

Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) may affect mood and behavior in people with epilepsy and intellectual disability. A high AED load, derived from AED polytherapy and/or high doses of AEDs, has been suggested to be a risk factor for behavioral side effects. Data were drawn from Wave 3 of the Intellectual Disability Supplement to the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (IDS-TILDA). The Behavior Problems Inventory Short Form (BPI-S) was used to assess challenging behaviors. AED load was calculated and median AED loads obtained. Non-parametric tests and binary logistic regression were performed to determi

Classes of adolescents with disruptive behaviors in a general population sample.

BACKGROUND: To study disruptive behaviors adequately, we need to distinguish between individuals with different types of problems that may have a different etiology. The availability of a taxonomic system that helps in identifying homogeneous groups of individuals, with similar patterns of disruptive behaviors, is crucial to achieve this goal. Therefore, we examine which classes of preadolescents with symptoms of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), and Conduct Disorder (CD) can be identified in the general population. METHODS: Disruptive behav

Nitric oxide (NO) signaling as a potential therapeutic modality against psychostimulants.

Abuse of psychostimulants presents a significant health and social problem worldwide. Traditionally, the dopaminergic system has received much attention for its role in the development and manifestation of addictive behavior. The identification of the close interaction between the dopaminergic and glutamatergic pathway and by extension the nitric oxide (NO) signaling pathway (the nitrergic system) have provided a broader scope on the mechanisms underlying the development of addictive behavior following exposure to cocaine and methamphetamine. NO signaling is associated with the acquisition and

Open-area seclusion in the long-term treatment of aggressive and disruptive psychotic patients, an introduction to a ward procedure.

The clinical rationale and procedure of "open-area seclusion" as a treatment modality with psychotic patients is presented. This standard procedure was originally introduced as an alternative to arbitrary measures in response to aggressive and disruptive behavior. The seclusion area is locked, but the patient is never locked up alone in any single room. The method of open-area seclusion is composed of four overlapping phases: (1) assisting the patient to the seclusion area, (2) time for a "calming down" process, (3) debriefing, and (4) reintegration. Verbal confrontation is central in enhancin

A controlled family history study of Tourette's syndrome, III: Affective and other disorders.

In a family history study, the frequency of affective disorders was significantly higher for all relatives of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (TS) patients than for all relatives of controls. Among the relatives of TS patients, the presence of any behavior disorder was significantly more frequent for first-, second-, and third-degree relatives and total relatives. Among all relatives, 30.6% of the relatives of TS patients versus 6.1% of control relatives (p less than .0001) had some behavior disorder. Studies of first-degree relatives suggest that among those individuals expressing the Gts ge
