Parent and teacher report of pragmatic aspects of communication: use of the children's communication checklist in a clinical setting.

The Children's Communication Checklist (CCC) was developed to provide an objective assessment of pragmatic aspects of children's communication difficulties. We aimed to (1) see whether the checklist provided valid and reliable information when completed by parents, and (2) consider its usefulness in a clinical context. Checklists were completed by parents and a professional who knew the child well for all 5 to 17-year-old referrals to a tertiary developmental paediatrics centre over a 31-month period. Children who were not yet speaking in sentences were excluded. From a sample of 151 children

The Prader-Willi syndrome: a self supporting program for children, youngsters and adults.

The Prader-Willi syndrome is characterized by four cardinal symptoms i.e. hypotonia, hypogonadism, mental retardation and extreme obesity. Behavioural and psychological problems are frequent in these patients, mostly related to the withholding of food and the necessity of diet control. A treatment program has been developed for their eating problems. The treatment program is based on three points: 1. The importance of teaching them healthy eating habits within a specific eating culture. 2. The convinction that their obsession and fixation on food can be canalized and satisfied by being occupie

Neurobehavioral complications of type I diabetes. Examination of possible risk factors.

There is increasing interest in the possibility that diabetes mellitus may be associated with a series of neurobehavioral, or neuropsychological, changes; i.e., learning, memory, problem solving, mental and motor speed, and eye-hand coordination may sometimes be disrupted in diabetic children and adults, and this disruption may be a consequence of certain disease-related variables. To date, four neurobehavioral risk factors have been identified. For children and adolescents, the most potent risk factors appear to be age at diagnosis and the occurrence of schoolroom-related problems. Children w

A self-instructional package for increasing attending behavior in educable mentally retarded children.

The purpose of this study was to develop a self-instructional package that would aid highly distractible children in increasing their attending behavior in a training and two generalization (a one-to-one and a classroom) situations. Three untrained subjects were monitored for general comparison and social validation purposes. One of these control subjects was distractible and the other two (criterion comparison) were evaluated as not having attentional problems. A multiple baseline design was employed in which training was sequentially introduced across subjects. During training, the experimen

Gabapentin may promote language development in a pediatric patient with autism spectrum disorder: a case report.

At this time, there is no report of how gabapentin may promote language development in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experiencing neuropathic pain. A clinically significant increase in expressed vocabulary, around 10 words when gabapentin was prescribed to around 150 words at the 6-month follow-up, was observed in a child with ASD. This was likely due to improved symptoms of neuropathic pain, which could have allowed the patient to more effectively focus on language acquisition. Given that speech therapy had failed for years at that time to improve the patient's vocabulary and h

Practice Effects and Long Delays: A Case Report Exploring a Novel Approach to Detecting Accelerated Long-Term Forgetting.

OBJECTIVE: Accelerated Long-Term Forgetting (ALF) is when newly learned information "decays" faster than expected over an extended period and is associated with temporal-lobe epilepsy (TLE). There is no well-established method for assessing ALF despite its apparent prevalence. We hypothesized that evidencing an absence of practice effects may represent an effective approach to detecting ALF. We sought to determine if this method, along with the long-delay memory tests, could evidence ALF in a single case. METHOD: We present a 66-year-old male with TLE who had memory complaints despite a stabl

Characterization of language abilities and semantic networks in very preterm children at school-age.

It has been widely assessed that very preterm children (<32 weeks gestational age) present language and memory impairments compared with full-term children. However, differences in their underlying semantic memory structure have not been studied yet. Nevertheless, the way concepts are learned and organized across development relates to children's capacities in retrieving and using information later. Therefore, the semantic memory organization could underlie several cognitive deficits existing in very preterm children. Computational mathematical models offer the possibility to characterize sema

Specialization of the brain for language in children with Fragile X Syndrome: a functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy study.

Specialization of the brain for language is early emerging and essential for language learning in young children. Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is a neurogenetic disorder marked by high rates of delays in both expressive and receptive language, but neural activation patterns during speech and language processing are unknown. We report results of a functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) study of responses to speech and nonspeech sounds in the auditory cortex in a sample of 2- to 10-year-old children with FXS and typically developing controls (FXS n = 23, TDC n = 15, mean age = 6.44 and 7.07 y

Is playing violent video games a risk factor for aggressive behaviour? Adding narcissism, self-esteem and PEGI ratings to the debate.

INTRODUCTION: Aggressive behaviour is a challenge for society. There continues to be considerable debate over whether the consumption of violent video games affects aggression, as violent video game content has become more accessible in recent years due to the growing use of online distribution platforms. Personality traits often linked to aggression, such as narcissism and self-esteem, have been considered in the context of violent video game play and their relationship with aggression. METHODS: We surveyed an international population of 166 game players on their personality traits and their

Specific Learning Disorders and Eating Disorders: an Italian retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Although Anorexia Nervosa (AN) patients show dysfunctional behaviour in information processing, visual and verbal memory performance, and different cognitive fields, regardless of their BMI, the literature on the correlations between Eating Disorders (ED) and Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDD) does not provide conclusive data. Rather than a consequence of the mental disorder, cognitive dysfunctions may be a risk factor for AN. METHODS: Our retrospective study investigates the prevalence of Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) among patients with ED. We considered 262 patients being tr

Wearable-Sensors-Based Platform for Gesture Recognition of Autism Spectrum Disorder Children Using Machine Learning Algorithms.

Autistic people face many challenges in various aspects of daily life such as social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and verbal communication. They feel hesitant to talk with others. The signs of autism vary from one individual to another, with a range from mild to severe. Autistic children use fewer communicative gestures compared with typically developing children (TD). With time, the parents may learn their gestures and understand what is occurring in their child's mind. However, it is difficult for other people to understand their gestures. In this paper, we propose a wearable-sensor

Rethinking glottal midline detection.

A healthy voice is crucial for verbal communication and hence in daily as well as professional life. The basis for a healthy voice are the sound producing vocal folds in the larynx. A hallmark of healthy vocal fold oscillation is the symmetric motion of the left and right vocal fold. Clinically, videoendoscopy is applied to assess the symmetry of the oscillation and evaluated subjectively. High-speed videoendoscopy, an emerging method that allows quantification of the vocal fold oscillation, is more commonly employed in research due to the amount of data and the complex, semi-automatic analysi

Brain structural changes after multi-strategic metamemory training in older adults with subjective memory complaints: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Metamemory is the process of monitoring and controlling one's memory. Improving metamemory may reduce the memory problem in old age. We hypothesized that metamemory training (MMT) would improve cognition in older adults with subjective memory complaints and change the brain region related to metacognition. METHOD: We recruited and randomized older adults to the multi-strategic memory training of 10 weekly 90-min sessions, based on the metamemory concept or usual care. Cognitive tests including the Elderly Verbal Learning Test, Simple Rey Figure Test, Digit Span, Spatial Span, Cate…
