Health of children born to medical radiographers.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a reliable method for collecting information on reproductive outcome in an occupational setting; and to investigate the health of children born to medical radiographers. METHODS: The study population comprised 6730 members of the College of Radiographers who were, at the time of survey; aged between 30 and 64 years, on the current membership file of the College, and were resident in Britain. RESULTS: The postal method developed proved to be reliable, with around 87% of questionnaires being returned. The observed frequencies of reproductive events were broadly in line w

Radiation-induced craniofacial deformities: a new classification and management algorithm.

Little is written about the spectrum of late radiation-induced craniofacial abnormalities and the guidelines for treating these abnormalities. The clinical records of 13 patients (eight males and five females) who received childhood craniofacial radiation between birth and 11 years of age and who subsequently had reconstructive surgery were reviewed. Eleven patients had their irradiation at the age from 1 to 5 years. The other two patients received their treatment at a relatively older age (9 and 11 years). Their deformities ranged from isolated soft-tissue deficiency with no or minimal bony d

Nuclear abnormalities in aspirated thyroid cells and chromosome aberrations in lymphocytes of residents near the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site.

Chromosomal studies in peripheral lymphocytes from 63 residents near the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site, at ages of 52-63 years old, were performed in 2001-2002. A higher rate of chromosome aberrations was observed in the two contaminated villages, Dolon and Sarjal, compared with the control village, Kokpekti. Moreover, a relationship of frequency of cells with radiation induced chromosome aberrations and the previously estimated exposure dose was observed. Furthermore, apparent nuclear abnormalities (ANA) of thyroid follicular cells were studied in 30 out of 63 residents, who were examined f

Fibroblast radiosensitivity and intraocular fibrovascular proliferation following radiotherapy for bilateral retinoblastoma.

A 5-day-old female patient was found to have large hereditary retinoblastomas in the posterior pole of each eye. The patient received radiation treatment over a 39-day period, with each retina receiving 4600 rad. Two weeks after the complete treatment the tumours had regressed to approximately one-quarter of their original size. By 14 weeks following completion of radiotherapy the patient had developed in each eye extensive iris neovascularisation with progressive closure of the filtration angles, secondary glaucoma, and retinal detachments resulting from fibrovascular proliferation on the ret

Pudendal entrapment neuropathy: a rare complication of pelvic radiation therapy.

Pudendal nerve entrapment (PNE) is an uncommon cause of chronic pain. Pudendal nerve entrapment typically occurs when the pudendal nerve is fused to nearby anatomical structures or trapped between the sacrotuberous and sacrospinalis ligaments. Pudendal nerve entrapment can be caused by excessive bicycling, pregnancy, anatomic abnormalities, scarring due to surgery, or as a sequela of radiation therapy. Radiation-induced peripheral neuropathy is usually chronic, progressive, and often irreversible. Radiation-induced pudendal neuropathy is much less common than the more familiar brachial plexopa

Protection of spermatogenesis against gamma ray-induced damage by granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in mice.

The radioprotective effects of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (GCSF) were further investigated with respect to the testicular system. Recombinant human GCSF (100 μg kg(-1) body weight/day) was administrated to male C3H/HeN mice by subcutaneous injection for three consecutive days before pelvic irradiation (5 Gy) and histopathological parameters were assessed at 12 h and 21 days post-irradiation (pi). The GCSF protected the germ cells from radiation induced- apoptosis (P < 0.01 vs. irradiated group at 12 h pi). GCSF remarkably attenuated radiation-induced reduction in testis weight, semi

Radiation induced apoptosis and pulmonary fibrosis: curcumin an effective intervention?

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a fatal lung disease characterized by interstitial remodeling, leading to compromised lung function. Extra vascular fibrin deposition and abnormalities in the fibrinolysis are the major clinical manifestations of lung diseases such as acute lung injury (ALI) and its most severe form, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ALI progresses to pulmonary fibrosis (PF) and makes patient's life miserable. Anti-fibrinolysis and apoptosis are involved in the progression of PF. Apoptotic markers are detectable within IPF lung tissue and senescent cell deletion

The natural history of radiation-induced proctosigmoiditis: an analysis of 88 patients.

The records of 88 patients with radiation-induced proctosigmoidosis seen over an eight year period were reviewed. Eighty-four (95 per cent) had been irradiated for a gynaecological malignancy. The peak incidence of bleeding occurred after a latent period of nine months from the time of irradiation. Twenty-five subjects (28 per cent) had associated injury to the urinary tract. A wide spectrum of radiological abnormalities found on barium enema is described. Twenty-four patients (27 per cent) underwent operations for radiation-induced injury to the colon and urinary tract. Operations on the bowe

Emerging role of thalidomide in the treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding.

Thalidomide was initially synthesised in 1954 and marketed as a sedative and antiemetic for morning sickness. It was withdrawn in 1961 due to the realisation that it was teratogenic with over 10 000 children born with congenital abnormalities. Since then it has been used for treatment of dermatological and oncological conditions, including myeloma. In 1994, it was found to have a potent antiangiogenic effect via downregulation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). This has led to its use in gastrointestinal bleeding, as vascular abnormalities such as angiodysplasia have been found to h

Photodermatoses: Kids are not just little people.

Photodermatoses are a group of skin disorders caused by abnormal reaction to ultraviolet radiation. Photodermatoses are divided into four groups: (1) immunologically mediated photodermatoses; (2) chemical- and drug-induced photodermatoses; (3) photoaggravated dermatoses; and (4) hereditary photodermatoses. This contribution discusses differences in the approach and diagnosis of pediatric and adult patients with suspected photodermatoses, focusing on immunologically mediated photodermatoses and chemical- and drug-induced photodermatoses.

Cancer therapy and risk of congenital malformations in children fathered by men treated for testicular germ-cell cancer: A nationwide register study.

BACKGROUND: Because of the potential mutagenic effects of chemo- and radiotherapy, there is concern regarding increased risk of congenital malformations (CMs) among children of fathers with cancer. Previous register studies indicate increased CM risk among children conceived after paternal cancer but lack data on oncological treatment. Increased CM risk was recently reported in children born before paternal cancer. This study aims to investigate whether anti-neoplastic treatment for testicular germ-cell cancer (TGCC) implies additional CM risk. METHODS AND FINDINGS: In this nationwide registe

Radiation-induced optic neuropathy.

Radiation-induced optic neuropathy (RION) is a devastating late complication of radiotherapy to the anterior visual pathway resulting in acute, profound, irreversible visual loss. It is thought to be a result of radiation necrosis of the anterior visual pathway. Visual loss may be unilateral or bilateral; simultaneous or sequential. RION occurs commonly between 10-20 months, with an average of 18 months after treatment; but the onset may range from three months to 9 years. Cumulative doses of radiation that exceed 50 Gy or single doses to the anterior visual pathway or greater than 10 Gy are u

Radiation therapy and the risk of herpes zoster in patients with cancer.

BACKGROUND: The role and impact of radiation therapy (RT) on the development of herpes zoster (HZ) has not been well studied. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between RT and HZ. METHODS: A propensity score-matched, retrospective cohort study was conducted using institutional cancer registry data and medical records from 2011 to 2015. The risk of developing HZ in the RT and non-RT groups was compared using a Cox proportional hazards model. Associations also were explored between the RT field and the anatomic location of HZ in patients who developed HZ after RT. Th

Maternal occupational exposure to ionizing radiation and major structural birth defects.

BACKGROUND: Ionizing radiation (IR) is known to be carcinogenic and mutagenic, but little is known about the association between maternal occupational exposure to IR and birth defects. METHODS: We studied 38,009 mothers who participated in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study and delivered between 1997 and 2009. We assessed odds ratios [ORs] for the association between maternal occupations with potential exposure to IR and 39 birth defects. RESULTS: We observed significant odds ratios (ORs) for isolated hydrocephaly (adjusted OR [AOR], 2.1; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.1-4.2), isol

A histological study on the cataractogenic effects of heavy charged particles.

The morphology of the mouse lens was studied by light and electron microscopy between 4 and 30 months after graded single doses of photons or charged particle exposure. Four-month-old mice were given upper body or head only doses of 220 kVp x-rays or to 40Ar (570 MeV/amu), 40Ar(500 MeV/amu), 20Ne(470 MeV/amu) and 12C (400 MeV/amu) particles. The lenses examined in this pilot study were largely from mice dedicated to other designed experiments; nor all radiation conditions are represented at each sample time. At 4 months after 0.05, 0.3 or 0.9 Gy 20Ne radiation, the micronuclei appeared in the
