The career sustainability of early-career faculty in the health professions is often framed as a matter of individual resilience, a perspective that obscures institutional determinants of ill-being and attrition. We argue that retention and thriving depend on an institutional ecosystem that integrates structured mentoring, psychopedagogical support and formal recognition of faculty work. Drawing on recent evidence on burnout, resilience and career development in academic medicine, we propose the Health Professions Faculty Career Sustainability Institutional Ecosystem (EISCD-Health) and the Fac

Active learning methods, such as team- and problem-based learning, are known to improve students' learning attitudes and teamwork skills in undergraduate education. This study conducted an experiment that incorporated an escape room (ER) in classes with the aim of improving students' motivation to learn and knowledge acquisition through collaborative learning. An ER was designed and administered to third-year undergraduate pharmacy students. Students were randomly assigned to a control group (regular lecture focused on knowledge transfer) or an ER group. Both groups completed pre- and post-tes

This study explores the change in expectations for institutional lecturers during the transition to virtual education before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our goal is to examine how the criteria used to evaluate lecturers' performance, as operationalized in student evaluations of teaching (SET), both reflect and shape lecturer roles during the shift to virtual education. The research relies on analysis of feedback forms, including an examination of teaching committee protocols, interviews with academic managers holding positions in teaching centers, and program and department heads. The fi

BACKGROUND: The ceremonial inauguration of the Medical Faculty at Lviv University on September 9, 1894, by Emperor Franz Joseph, signified the culmination of a decades-long endeavor to reestablish medical education in Lviv. The institution was initially established in 1784 under the auspices of Emperor Joseph II. However, it was subsequently dissolved in 1805 and subsequently reinstated in 1817, albeit without a medical faculty. This study provides an analysis of the faculty's complete restoration as a result of international and interdisciplinary collaboration within the political, academic,

This study examines university faculty members' perceptions of how artificial intelligence (AI) supports personalized instruction and facilitates learning opportunities in higher education. Given the exploratory nature of AI-based pedagogical practices, a qualitative, interpretive design was employed to capture instructors' lived experiences and meaning-making processes. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 faculty members from two Iranian universities, selected through purposive maximum-variation sampling. Data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis in MAXQDA 22, and tru

BACKGROUND: The first year of university represents a critical transition period for undergraduate nursing students as they adapt to the academic, social, and professional expectations of higher education. Difficulties navigating these demands can undermine engagement, confidence, and sense of belonging, contributing to early withdrawal from nursing programs. Targeted support strategies that address the multidimensional nature of transition are therefore essential.
AIM: To identify and synthesise current evidence on strategies that support first-year undergraduate nursing students in their tr

BACKGROUND: Community-academic research partnerships can benefit from diverse perspectives, but these may lead to conflicts that either unify or divide efforts.
OBJECTIVE: We present lessons learned in developing a relationship building and conflict management approach for a food systems-change intervention implemented and evaluated using community action research. Our partnership included people from academia, community-based organizations, and grassroots initiatives within a historically redlined urban setting.
METHODS: Our approach emerged from iterative and adaptive processes conducted o…

BACKGROUND: Pre- and post-licensure nursing students often face academic challenges in high stakes courses such as pathophysiology and pharmacology. To promote nursing program completion and timely graduation, it is important that students achieve success in these courses.
PURPOSE: Recognizing the need to provide comprehensive academic support to students enrolled in pathophysiology and pharmacology, one school of nursing implemented an academic excellence initiative called NEST (Nursing Excellence through Scholarship and Technology).
METHOD: The NEST program combines targeted academic inter

AIM: Authorship is a key marker for academic achievement, yet its integrity is increasingly compromised by "free riding," whereby individuals are listed as co-authors without making any substantive contributions. This commentary examines the nature, drivers, and ethical implications of free riding in academic publishing and proposes strategies to promote fairness, accountability, and integrity in authorship practices.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This commentary draws on existing literature, international authorship guidelines (including those of the International Committee of Medical Journal Edito

Traditional microbiology experimental teaching methodology, often based on rigid "cookbook" experiment plans, fails to meet the growing need to cultivate skilled and innovative individuals. Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) provide a solution by integrating research-based learning into the curriculum, offering an opportunity to improve the "hard" and "soft" skills for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students. In this study, a CURE was incorporated into the microbiology experiment curriculum focusing on the isolation and characterization of antimic

BACKGROUND: Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is readily available to medical students, yet educators may not know how students use these tools or what guidance students perceive as missing. We examined student-reported AI use, confidence, concerns and institutional support to inform practical guidance.
METHODS: We conducted an online survey of medical students recruited primarily through US allopathic medical school peer networks from 15 July to 1 September 2025. We used non-probability sampling; because dissemination relied on voluntary forwarding, we could not calculate a response ra

The professionalization of medical education is an essential, strategic renewal movement, driven by the need to graduate competent, ethical physicians who meet the demands of healthcare systems. This paradigm is structured around 3 interdependent axes: medical professionalism development (student), competency-based education (CBE) (institution), and medical faculty professionalization. The most advanced curricular model recommended is Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA), which translates generic competencies into observable and evaluable clinical tasks, such as obtaining a complete patie

Healthy People 2030 calls for schools, workplaces, and other settings to be more accessible to individuals with disabilities, thereby enhancing their overall well-being and quality of life. Yet current academic and clinical policies and guidelines are often inconsistent, with gaps or direct conflicts that act as barriers to participation in class and clinical, impacting student outcomes. Nursing students with disabilities, especially those who use service dogs, often encounter barriers in academic and clinical settings. They are a unique, often overlooked subgroup of nursing students. The over

Initiatives to improve physiology majors' social and behavioral professional skills development would be remiss without an understanding of the emotional culture affecting intended audiences. To characterize the emotional hidden curriculum in undergraduate life science education, this study explores feeling rules that influence how undergraduate prehealth students navigate emotional expression, an important aspect of emotional intelligence, in life science classrooms. We conducted semistructured interviews and culturally responsive focus groups at an R1 university in the southeast. Our finding

BACKGROUND: Effective monitoring of global drug safety information is increasingly important for public health. However, the large volume of global safety data, combined with variations in pharmaceutical systems and national regulatory contexts, poses challenges in prioritizing relevant information. To address this challenge, this study aimed to develop a set of criteria for selecting reference countries when evaluating foreign drug safety data.
METHODS: Experts from academia and the pharmaceutical industry participated in focus group interviews (FGIs) to identify key factors for selecting re…

Organizational climate is a key determinant of diverse aspects of success in work settings, including in academia. Power dynamics in higher education can result in inequitable experiences of workplace climate, potentially harming the well-being and productivity of employees. Quantifying experiences of climate across employment categories can help identify changes necessary to create a more equitable workplace for all. We developed and administered a climate survey within our academic workplace-the Department of Zoology and Physiology at the University of Wyoming-to evaluate experiences of clim…

BACKGROUND: Men are persistently underrepresented in nursing academia, holding fewer than 8% of full-time faculty positions, yet their experiences remain under-studied and are often treated as uniform. Existing work relies largely on small single-institution samples and rarely examines how sexual orientation, race, gender modality, and age shape these experiences.
OBJECTIVES: To explore the lived experiences of male faculty teaching in accredited nursing programs, and to examine how intersecting identities shape their sense of belonging, professional treatment, and intent to remain in academi…
